Shooting at Virginia Tech University

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Updates at bottom

What is being described as the worse school shooting in U.S. history, at last report, 21 students at Virginia Tech University have been killed by a gunman. An additional 21 students were wounded.
Please join me in praying for the students and their families.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — At least 21 are dead and another 21 are wounded after a shooting at Virginia Tech University Monday morning, police said.

Campus police said there was only one shooter and he is now dead. They are unsure if the shooter was a student and it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.

“Today the university was struck by a tragedy we consider of monumental proportions,” Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said during a press conference shortly after noon. “I cannot begin to convey my own personal sense of loss over this senseless, incomprehensible, heinous act.”

Steger said school officials are notifying victims’ next if kin, and state police and the FBI are still investigating the various crime scenes. They are still trying to identify all the victims. The university will set up counseling centers for students and faculty.

At 7:15 a.m. Monday, a 911 call came in to the campus police department concerning an incident at West Ambler Johnston, a residence hall, and that there were multiple shooting victims, Steger said. While that investigation was underway, a second shooting was reported in Norris Hall, located at the opposite end of the 2,600-acre campus.

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said at least one person was killed at West Ambler Johnston, a residence hall, but several others were injured in that shooting. At least 20 were killed in classrooms in Norris Hall, an engineering building, Flinchum said.

Flinchum said the Norris Hall gunman was dead, but wouldn’t say whether the shooter killed himself.

A spokeswoman at Montgomery Regional Hospital said 17 students were being treated there for gunshot wounds and other injuries, and Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg reports that four people with gunshot wounds were being treated there. Carilion spokeswoman Sharon Honaker said one was in critical condition and three others were stable.

Update 13:10 CDT 04/16/07:

Fox News is reporting that 32 students are confirmed killed. Pray hard for the families of these slain students and also for those who have been wounded.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — At least 32 people are confirmed dead and at least another 21 are wounded after a shooting at Virginia Tech University Monday morning, federal law enforcement officials told FOX News.

Campus police said there was only one shooter and he is now dead. They are unsure if the shooter was a student and it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.

Update: 06:10 CDT 04/17/07:
Authorities have stated that 32 people were shot and killed yesterday. At least 15 people were wounded, four seriously. They have preliminarily identified a gunman. They are also interviewing a “person of interest” in the shooting deaths of the two people in the dormitory. The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that “authorities are investigating whether the gunman was a 24-year-old Chinese man who arrived in the U.S. last year on a student visa issued in Shanghai. Police believe three bomb threats on the campus last week may have been attempts by the man to test the campus’ security response”.

Police say they’ve preliminarily identified a gunman who massacred 32 people Monday at Virginia Tech in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history, cutting down his victims in two attacks two hours apart before the university could grasp what was happening and get the warning out to students.

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum would not release the name of the dead gunman, adding that the investigation was ongoing, and “we want to get it right.”

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday night that authorities are investigating whether the gunman was a 24-year-old Chinese man who arrived in the U.S. last year on a student visa issued in Shanghai. Police believe three bomb threats on the campus last week may have been attempts by the man to test the campus’ security response, the newspaper reported.

Flinchum also would not confirm whether the gunman, responsible for the bloodbath that left 30 dead in the school’s Norris Hall classroom building, was the same person who killed two people — a male and a female — two hours earlier in a dormitory on the other side of the sprawling western Virginia campus.

“We have a preliminary ID, but we’re not prepared to release it yet. The investigation is ongoing and we are making progress,” Flinchum told reporters Monday night, adding that police had questioned a “person of interest” related to the first shooting, and that person was not the dead gunman.

“They’re not the same person,” the Flinchum said, referring to the person of interest and the gunman. “We are actively pursing all leads, and this investigation will determine whether they [the shootings] are related or not.”

———-

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was incomplete, said that the gunman had two pistols and multiple clips of ammunition. The student newspaper reported that police had sent two guns to the state police crime lab for forensic testing.

In all, the death toll of the two shootings was 33, including the gunman. At least 15 people were wounded, four seriously.

Update: 06:50 04/17/07:
Fox News is reporting that university officials have confirmed that the shooter in the second attack was a university student. University president Charles Steger said that there did not appear to be another shooter in regards to the two students killed in the dormitory.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech’s president said Tuesday that a university student was the gunman in at least the second of the two campus attacks that claimed 33 lives to become the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history.

Though he did not explicitly say the student was also the gunman in the first shooting, he said he did not believe there was another shooter. The gunman struck down two people at a dormitory Monday before killing 30 more people at a campus building and finally killing himself with a shot to his head.

“We do know that he was an Asian male — this is the second incident — an Asian man who was a resident in one of our dormitories,” university president Charles Steger said in an interview with CNN, confirming for the first time that the killer was a student.

Steger also defended the delay in warning students about the gunman. Some students said their first warning came more than two hours after the first shooting, in an e-mail at 9:26 a.m. By then the second shooting had begun.

Steger said the university was trying to notify students who were already on-campus, not those who were commuting in.

“We warned the students that we thought were immediately impacted,” he told CNN. “We felt that confining them to the classroom was how to keep them safest.”

The slayings left people of this once-peaceful mountain town and the university at its heart praying for the victims of the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history, struggling to find order in a tragedy of such unspeakable horror it defies reason.

Update: 09:07 04/17/07:
The shooter at Virgina Tech has been identified as Cho Seung-Hui, a campus student and native of South Korea. According to ballistics test, he was also the shooter at the dormitory.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The gunman responsible for at least the second of the two Virginia Tech attacks that claimed 33 lives to become the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history has been identified Cho Seung-Hui, a campus student and native of South Korea, Virginia Tech police said Tuesday.

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said the shooter was a 23-year-old resident alien who was an undergraduate senior English major. He had a residence in Centreville, Va., but was also living on campus in Harper Hall.

While authorities have not explicitly said Cho — now dead after taking his own life — was also the gunman in the first shooting at West Ambler Johnston residence hall, they have made clear they don’t believe there was a second shooter. But officials said again Tuesday that they have not yet confirmed the same person was responsible for both shootings.

“It’s certainly reasonable for us to assume Cho was the shooter in both places but we don’t have the evidence to take us there at this point in time,” said Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. Steve Flaherty said during a press conference Tuesday. “We also have no evidence to indicate there was an accomplice at either event” but officials are still investigating whether the shooter had any help during the day.

“Quite frankly, we have the one chance to get it right,” Flaherty said, so authorities want to make sure all evidence points to one shooter before they rule out the possibility of a second gunman.

Flinchum said a 9-mm and 22-caliber handgun was recovered from Norris Hall, where the second shooting took place. Bullets, shell casings and other evidence was examined by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

“Lab results confirmed that one of the two weapons seized in Norris Hall was used in both shootings,” Flinchum said.

The Temptation of Jesus

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.'[Deut. 8:3]”

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'[Deut. 6:13]”

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written:
” ‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'[Psalm 91:11,12]”

Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'[Deut. 6:16]”

When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Iran’s Supreme Court Acquits Killers of “Morally Corrupt” People

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Here’s an example of justice in Iran under Islamic law. Now a group of thugs can try, convict and execute people for the perceived crime of being “morally corrupt”. As a matter of fact, one does not even have to actually be guilty of anything, and since there is no actual court to decide one’s fate, it is totally up to these murders. Iran’s Supreme Court most certainly condones their behavior. We all know that we can’t have “morally corrupt” people running around, even if they aren’t actually guilty. According to the Muslims, better to be safe then sorry.

Iran’s Supreme Court has acquitted a group of men charged over a series of gruesome killings in 2002, according to lawyers for the victims’ families.

The vigilantes were not guilty because their victims were involved in un-Islamic activities, the court found.

The killers said they believed Islam let them spill the blood of anyone engaged in illicit activities if they issued two warnings to the victims.

The serial killings took place in 2002 in the south-eastern city of Kerman.

‘Morally corrupt’

The case raises serious questions about vigilantes in Iran taking justice into their own hands and undermining the rule of law.

Up to 18 people were killed in just one year, but only five of the murders were tried in court.

According to their confessions, the killers put some of their victims in pits and stoned them to death. Others were suffocated. One man was even buried alive while others had their bodies dumped in the desert to be eaten by wild animals.

The accused, who were all members of an Islamic paramilitary force, told the court their understanding of the teachings of one Islamic cleric allowed them to kill immoral people if they had ignored two warnings to stop their bad behaviour.

But there was no judicial process to determine the guilt of the victims in these cases.

The group even killed a young couple they thought were involved in sex outside marriage, but media reports say the couple were either married or engaged to be married.

Lawyers for the victims’ families say the Supreme Court has five times overturned the verdict of a lower court that found all the men guilty of murder.

Now the Supreme Court is reported to have acquitted all the killers of the charge of murder on the grounds that their victims were all morally corrupt.

Some of the group may, however, face prison sentences or have to pay financial compensation to their victims’ families.

‘Lucy’ Not Direct Ancestor of Humans

Monday, April 16th, 2007

This is a blow to the evolution lover, but it is what Christians have know from day one (actually from the day God created Adam). Researchers in Israel have disproven the THEORY that Australopithecus afarensis skeleton (a.k.a. “Lucy”) is a common ancestor with humans. I have known all along that this ‘man-made monkey-person’ was not my ancestor, but I wonder how the scientific community will explain this discovery.

Tel Aviv University anthropologists say they have disproven the theory that “Lucy” – the world-famous 3.2-million-year-old found in Ethiopia 33 years ago – is the last ancestor common to humans and another branch of the great apes family known as the “Robust hominids.”

The specific structure found in Lucy also appears in a species called Australopithecus robustus. Prof. Yoel Rak and colleagues at the Sackler School of Medicine’s department of anatomy and anthropology wrote, “The presence of the morphology in both the latter and Australopithecus afarensis and its absence in modern humans cast doubt on the role of [Lucy] as a common ancestor.”

The robust hominids were discovered in southern Africa 69 years ago and are believed to have lived between 2 million and 1.2 million years ago. Their jaws and jaw muscles were adapted to the dry environment in which they lived.

Rak and colleagues studied 146 mature primate bone specimens, including those from modern humans, gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans and found that the “ramus element” of the mandible connecting the lower jaw to the skull is like that of the robust forms, therefore eliminating the possibility that Lucy and her kind are Man’s direct ancestors. They should therefore, the Israeli researchers said, “be placed as the beginning of the branch that evolved in parallel to ours.”

UK Reporters Union to Boycott Israel, Pali Terrorist Reward Them by Killing Reporter

Monday, April 16th, 2007

One has to “love” the irony of this who situation. In truth it’s a sad statement of misplaced “loyalty” of the mainstream media to the pali terrorist.

Britain’s National Union of Journalists denounced Israel on Friday for its “military adventures” in Gaza and Lebanon, called on the government to impose sanctions and urged a boycott of Israeli goods.

By a vote of 66 to 54, the annual delegate’s meeting of Britain’s largest trade union for journalists called for “a boycott of Israeli goods similar to those boycotts in the struggles against apartheid South Africa led by trade unions, and [for] the [Trades Union Congress] to demand sanctions be imposed on Israel by the British government.”

Some of the union’s 40,000 members decried its “trendy lefty” agenda. Other motions before the four-day meeting in Birmingham, which ends Sunday, included condemnations of the US detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and support for Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez.

LONDON (AFP) – The BBC and Britain’s Foreign Office said on Sunday they were urgently investigating reports that kidnapped BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston had been executed by a little-known Islamic group.

Johnston, 44, was snatched at gunpoint on March 12 as he drove home from work in Gaza City, and since then there has been no word on his whereabouts.

In a statement sent to news outlets in Gaza on Sunday, the Kataeb al-Jihad al-Tawheed (The Brigades of Holy War and Unity) group said it had killed the 44-year-old British citizen to send a “message” to the Palestinian authorities.

The claim could not be verified and Palestinian and Western security sources said there was no proof it was true. Up to now, no Westerner has been killed after being abducted in the increasingly lawless territory.

In London, a BBC spokeswoman said: “We’ve heard of those reports but we don’t have any independent verification of them at the moment.”

“Obviously, we are deeply concerned about what we’re hearing. We are obviously making urgent inquiries about this because it’s of great concern to us to hear those sort of rumours,” she told AFP.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the report and are urgently looking into it.”

In its faxed statement, the group said: “We have demanded to all parties involved in the affair of the journalist, whom we are holding, that they free our prisoners from unjust prisons.”

“The whole world has mobilised for this journalist, while no-one has moved a single finger to come to the help of the thousands of our prisoners everywhere.

“Our goal was to send a clear message, but we were surprised by the position of the government to change reality and to present this in an incorrect manner, which has pushed us to reluctantly kill the journalist so that they get the message as quickly as possible.”

The group said it would distribute a video of the execution to media outlets shortly, and laid the blame for the killing on the Palestinian authorities and the British government.

There has been no independent confirmation of the group’s claim.

Let us hope this isn’t true. Continue to pray for Alan Johnston.

Rosie Challenged By Bill Keller

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Finally someone has calle Rosie out regarding her rants against Christians. Bill Keller, host of Live Prayer with Bill Keller, has challenged Rosie to a debate on the Howard Stern Show. While I completely detest the content of the Howard Stern Show, this confrontation is one that needs to occur. I questioned Bill Keller’s appearance there, considering Stern’s show content. After reading this article, I learned that after a recent visit to the Stern show, Keller received over many e-mails from Stern listeners who were requesting prayer.
The big question now is whether Rosie is willing to actually ‘get in the ring’ with a Christian or is she afraid to be confonted with the Truth.

The “Dr. Phil of Prayer” has issued a challenge to outspoken television star Rosie O’Donnell to defend her “anti-Christian hate speech,” surprisingly by the invitation of radio talk show host Howard Stern.

Bill Keller, host of ‘Live Prayer,’ has issued a challenge to ‘The View’ co-host Rosie O’Donnell where they would debate over anti-Christian remarks she has made. If she accepts the invitation, the event would be broadcasted via Howard Stern’s radio talk show.
This would be the third time Bill Keller, host of Live Prayer with Bill Keller, has spoken on the popular “shock jock’s” daily program, and he is willing to appear again to debate with O’Donnell, who he felt has had no direct challenge from Christians against her anti-religion remarks.

“This could either be because Christian leaders are afraid of Rosie, or because Rosie is afraid to be confronted by Christian leaders,” Keller explained. “Well, I am standing here today calling Rosie out to defend and debate her positions, and let the people decide for themselves if she has any merit or if she is lacking substance.”

The request has been dubbed “The Rosie Challenge.”

Keller has asserted that O’Donnell, an openly lesbian star and co-host of ABC’s The View, has continually criticized Christianity and the internet/television evangelist said he will specifically respond to her comments that Christianity is “no different than radical Islam.”

Last year, days after the observance of Sept. 11, O’Donnell had shocked co-hosts and audiences when she said on The View, “Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like America where we have a separation of church and state. We’re a democracy here.”

Two months later, a Barna Group study conducted in October on over 1,000 adults revealed that most evangelical Christians were unaware of the controversial remark that aired.

Keller jumped on the idea to appear on Stern’s Sirius Satellite Radio 101 network to speak directly with the television co-host.

“Rosie is very brave when she is talking to the camera and nobody is there to challenge her outrageous views on so-called ‘radical Christianity,’” added the prayer host. “Let her stand up and debate someone who will not be intimidated by her and will go toe-to-toe with her on this issue.”

Thompson and Obama Close In On Rudy and Hillary

Monday, April 16th, 2007

This should be a very interesting race.

There was good news this week for both soon-to-be candidate Fred Thompson and growing-by-the-hour candidate Barack Obama. The Los Angeles Times survey of April 5-9 found that former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson had moved into second place – ahead of the seriously damaged McCain – in the GOP presidential primary. This is an amazing showing for an undeclared candidate.

And on the Democratic side, an online vote conducted by liberal anti-war group, Moveon.org showed Obama in first place, with Edwards close behind, as the best candidate to lead the U.S. out of Iraq. Hillary came in fifth, after Kunich and Richardsen. This does not auger well for Hillary, who has been trying to move further to the left on the war and cultivate the anti-war vote.

Attacks Against Jews Double in 2006 Report Reveals

Monday, April 16th, 2007

The Jews are God’s chosen people, and as such, they will always be under attack by Satan, who has so many ways to try to accomplish what he wants.
But as God’s chosen people, the Jews will always be protected from annihilation. Satan has already lost.
Continue to pray for the Jews and for the Nation of Israel.

The number of anti-Semitic acts around the world, especially in Europe, registered a large increase during 2006.

According to a report, 590 acts of vandalism and violence were committed during 2006 against Jewish people, property and institutes such as synagogues and cemeteries.

The number of physical attacks against Jews, including children and adolescents, doubled compared to 2005.

This information was published Sunday morning in a report compiled by the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism and Racism in Tel Aviv University together with the World Jewish Congress.

The report was released for the Holocaust Memorial Day, on Monday.

The report stated that the attacks were mostly random, making it very difficult to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice. In reality, many of the attacks were committed by Muslim immigrants and far-right groups.

A total of 324 violent incidents was registered in Europe, higher than in other regions of the world.

The highest number of anti-Semitic acts commited in the UK in the last 20 years was registered. The statistics in France and Belgium also show an increase in anti-Semitism. Germany remained steady but high, holding the record for desecrating cemeteries and Holocaust-memorial monuments.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Commentator Michael, shared this information concerning Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“Here in Israel Yom HaShoah is a pretty solemn day. They sound the civil defense sirens in mid-morning, and everthing stops for 3 minutes.
It’s moving, especially if you are out driving, shopping, whatever, and everything just stops around you.”

Take a moment to pray for Israel, the Jews and any remaining Holocaust survivors.
