Jesus and Jairus’ Daughter – A Bible Story Mural

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

“Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”

But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”

Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher any more.”

Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”

They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
Luke 8:40-56 (New International Version)

“This is probably the least known story depicted in any of our murals. We wanted to show Jesus performing a miracle with a young girl, and this is one of the few such accounts in the Bible. You may remember that Jesus healed the woman with an issue of blood on the way to Jairus’ house.”

Global Warming or Global Cooling?

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

For a few years now, we have been inundated with ridiculous ramblings about global warming. Now we are hearing about global cooling. (Al Gore, get your movie cameras ready again). When will people realize that the climate is not controlled by man, but by God.

Politicians and environmentalists these days convey the impression that climate-change research is an exceptionally dull field with little left to discover. We are assured by everyone from David Suzuki to Al Gore to Prime Minister Stephen Harper that “the science is settled.” At the recent G8 summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel even attempted to convince world leaders to play God by restricting carbon-dioxide emissions to a level that would magically limit the rise in world temperatures to 2C.

The fact that science is many years away from properly understanding global climate doesn’t seem to bother our leaders at all. Inviting testimony only from those who don’t question political orthodoxy on the issue, parliamentarians are charging ahead with the impossible and expensive goal of “stopping global climate change.” Liberal MP Ralph Goodale’s June 11 House of Commons assertion that Parliament should have “a real good discussion about the potential for carbon capture and sequestration in dealing with carbon dioxide, which has tremendous potential for improving the climate, not only here in Canada but around the world,” would be humorous were he, and even the current government, not deadly serious about devoting vast resources to this hopeless crusade.

Climate stability has never been a feature of planet Earth. The only constant about climate is change; it changes continually and, at times, quite rapidly. Many times in the past, temperatures were far higher than today, and occasionally, temperatures were colder. As recently as 6,000 years ago, it was about 3C warmer than now. Ten thousand years ago, while the world was coming out of the thou-sand-year-long “Younger Dryas” cold episode, temperatures rose as much as 6C in a decade — 100 times faster than the past century’s 0.6C warming that has so upset environmentalists

(California) State Education Chief Pushes ‘Gay’ Pornfest

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

The homosexual activist will do anything to make sure the message of their depraved lifestyle is forced on our children.

California Supt. of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, under whose supervision hundreds of thousands of children are being educated, has used his state position and taxpayer-funded stationery to praise a “gay” pride event that has been used in the past to expose children to sexually explicit activities.

“As a school board member who cares about academics and the success of all students, I want to know how Mr. O’Connell’s letter has anything to do with public education and instruction,” said Priscilla Schreiber, the president of the Grossmont Unified High School District governing board.

“I am outraged that a person in this high-ranking elected position would advocate an event where diversity is not just being celebrated, but where pornography and indecent exposure is being perpetrated on the young and innocent children of our communities,” she said.

O’Connell’s letter to Mike Karim, of the San Diego LGBT Pride, notes that it is “with great pleasure that I offer my support for the 2007 celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness Festival. I am truly honored to recognize an endeavor that promotes equality and respect in our communities.”

He added thanks for the group’s “efforts to celebrate diversity and a sense of humanity among individuals while encouraging them to value each other’s rights and privileges as members of society.”

James Hartline, who publishes the James Hartline Report that monitors homosexual activists in the region, said the letter is “insidious.”

“O’Connell is the head guy for the public schools. Gay pride has absolutely nothing to do with his job, yet he used his state letterhead to issue an endorsement,” he told WND.

He said the “gay” pride event in question features sadomasochism, triple-X rated pornography and nearly nude men.

“He’s saying this is great for the community. But he’s the one responsible for setting down policy for elementary school children,” Hartline told WND.

“Charged with the responsibility to be the chief spokesman for California’s public schools, O’Connell plays one of the most significant roles in the lives of millions of small children in America’s most populated state,” Hartline continued. “Using public funds to send out a letter to endorse an event that features XXX pornography, an explicit S&M leather sex venue, and the distribution of condoms and lubricants used in anal intercourse, demonstrates that Superintendent O’Connell should now be considered one of the most dangerous men in all of California.”

Hartline noted the San Diego “Gay” Pride event already has experienced a number of controversies. In 2005, it was learned the group had hired sex offenders to work with various events, including a registered pedophile who was working in the event’s “Children’s Garden.”

Then in 2006, numerous small children were marched in the parade under the banner of a local charter school.

“O’Connor’s letter includes a shocking display of disrespect for families who are doing everything possible to protect their children from child molesters, the pornography industry, and sexually transmitted diseases,” Hartline said.

“He is not representing my position on [the pride event],” Schreiber told WND. “It’s in your face.”

O’Connell is not the first school administrator, however, to try to use his school position to encourage homosexual activity. As WND has reported, officials in Boulder, Colo., held a seminar for students where they were told to “have sex,” including same-sex experiences, and “take drugs.”

WND also has reported on earlier assemblies that have been used by schools to promote homosexuality, including one where parents were banned from the event, and a second where WND reported school officials ordered their 14-year-old freshman class into a “gay” indoctrination seminar after having them sign a confidentiality agreement promising not to tell their parents.

Conservative Episcopalian Group Says Priest’s Dual Faith Causes ‘Confusion’

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

The other day we posted about an Episcopal priest who says she is both Christian and Muslim. It is good to see that there are people within her own faith who have a problem with this statement.

A member of the Anglican Communion Network, a conservative group of Episcopalian ministers, churches and laypeople, says it’s no surprise that an Episcopal priest in Seattle claims she is both a Muslim and Christian. He says leaders in the denomination should take action against the priest.

Ann Holmes Redding has been an Episcopal priest for 20 years. She claims she became a Muslim last year, but still considers herself a Christian. According to a Seattle Times article, Redding says she has never believed in original sin, and has struggled with the nature of Jesus’ divinity for years. Still, she says she is both Muslim and Christian — “just like I’m both an American of African descent and a woman. I’m 100 percent both. At the most basic level, I understand the two religions to be compatible. That’s all I need.” Also, Redding’s bishop says he accepts her as both an Episcopal priest and a Muslim.

Peter Frank is with the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh, a leading conservative diocese. He says Redding’s announcement has created a lot of confusion about biblical Christianity.

“To me, it makes, certainly who we are as Episcopalians have to seem very incoherent to people around us,” Frank says. “We say things that sound like traditional Christianity, but when it comes time to back those things up, in many places Episcopalians just don’t seem to be able to do that.”

Redding’s confusing announcement, says Frank, should be addressed by conservative Anglicans. “We Episcopalians owe the rest of American Christianity an apology,” he says. “You know, we make your job harder by confusing what Christianity actually teaches or about Jesus Himself.

“I think the one thing that I would ask, however, is that [people] realize that there are a lot of us in the Episcopal Church that really do stand for mainstream Christianity.”

Redding will start teaching New Testament classes at Seattle University this fall. The Times article says she believes the Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — “is an idea about God” and cannot be taken literally. In addition, she does not believe Jesus and God are the same, but rather that “God is more than Jesus,” says the report.

Colson: Christians Must Stop ‘Privatizing’ Faith

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Chuck Colson says attacks in America against Christianity are increasing in scope, frequency, and intensity. Christians, he says, must be ready to defend a biblical worldview in an anti-Christian society.

The world is more dangerous today than ever before, says the founder of Prison Fellowship. Colson says Christians — clergy and laity alike — must do a better job of engaging the culture and answering the attacks against their faith. In the U.S., he says, that includes being on guard against radical Islam and standing strong in the battle for truth.

“We have a great, fabulous answer, because Christianity has been the most humanizing influence in human history,” Colson says. “Christianity is the only belief system open to all people — rich, poor, black, white, east, west; it’s a universal appeal.”

In addition, says the ministry founder, it is not a faith that forces itself on people. “It’s not an imposition; it is a proposal, because we believe in free will,” he explains. “If you look at Christianity, the essence of which is love and grace, it becomes tremendously appealing to people — and yet, they have this negative stereotype.”

Colson believes most Christians cannot defend their faith because the church no longer puts a premium on the defense of biblical truth. “We privatize the faith,” he says. “We don’t care so much any longer about truth, as we do about therapy.

“You know, when truth retreats in a church, therapy takes over — [we are more concerned about] how can we make people feel better about themselves. That’s not what the church is for,” he states. “The church is for worshipping God.”

Colson made his comments during an interview with OneNewsNow at the recent Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting in San Antonio. He has just released a Bible study on the Christian worldview with Pastor Rick Warren titled Wide Angle.

Texas Crowd Kills Passenger in Vehicle That Hit Child

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Has evil completely taken over the minds of this world’s people? How does a situation reach this point?

Police were searching Wednesday for more than a dozen people who may have been involved in the beating death of a man who was a passenger in a car that struck and injured a child not far from a Juneteenth celebration in Austin, Texas.

David Rivas Morales died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an assault by an unknown number of black men following the car accident, which occurred in the parking lot of an East Austin apartment complex, police said.

“It doesn’t seem to be a hate crime, it really seems to be a spontaneous act resulting from that collision with that child,” Harold Piatt, the commander of the Austin Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Unit. “We don’t know if there were any words exchanged between the driver and the men to start with that escalated this to the assault.”

The incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Booker T. Washington apartments, near Rosewood Park, where the city’s Juneteenth celebrations were wrapping up, Piatt said.

The driver of the car carrying Morales struck a 3- or 4-year-old girl, apparently prompting the attack.

“The driver, for whatever reason, whether he realized he was involved in the collision or his vehicle forced a stop, got out of the car, got into a confrontation with several men and was assaulted,” Piatt said.

Morales came to his aid and was fatally attacked in what police are calling a “spontaneous homicide.” He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The driver was able to get back into his car and drive away. Both he and his vehicle have been located, Piatt said, but he declined to release the driver’s identity because the man is a witness in an ongoing investigation.

“We could have had anywhere from two to 15 and 20 [people] who are actually involved in the assault,” Piatt said. Some 2,000 to 3,000 people were gathered in the parking lot at the time.

The child was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Brackenridge Hospital.

Piatt said there is no reason to link the assault with the Juneteenth celebrations.

“There were no city-sponsored events occurring on the parking lot of Booker T. Washington, although there were some events in the immediate area — Rosewood Park,” he said. “Some of the crowd may have gone onto Booker T. or people just out in their apartments — celebrating, having a good time, whatever — but there’s nothing to tie one to the other and nothing to indicate that this was a hate crime.”

The Austin Police Department is asking those with information to call its homicide tip line at 512-477-3588.

Juneteenth celebrates the day Gen. Gordon Granger shared the news of the Emancipation Proclamation with the slaves of Galveston, Texas, two years after Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in the United States.

“Good News about CAIR” by Fred Dalton Thompson

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

I’ve talked before about the Council on American-Islamic Relations — most recently because it filed that lawsuit against Americans who reported suspicious behavior by Muslims on a U.S. Airways flight. Better known just as CAIR, the lobbying group has come under a lot of scrutiny lately for its connections to terror-supporting groups. This time, though, The Washington Times has uncovered some very good news about the group.

For years, CAIR has claimed to represent millions of American Muslims. In fact, they claim to represent more Muslim in American than … there are in America. This has alarmed Americans in general as the group often seems to be more aligned with our enemies than us — which isn’t surprising as it spun off from a group funded by Hamas. As you know, Hamas has been waging a terrorist war against Israel and calls for its total destruction. It also promises to see America destroyed. Nowadays, Hamas is busy murdering its Palestinian political rivals.

Even with this history, and CAIR’s conspicuous failure to condemn Hamas by name, it has been treated as if represents Muslim Americans by our own government. The good news is that the financial support CAIR claims to have among American Muslims is a myth. We know this because The Washington Times got hold of the group’s IRS tax records.

CAIR’s dues-paying membership has shrunk 90 percent since 9/11 — from 29,000 in 2000 to only 1,700 last year. CAIR’s annual income from dues plunged from $733,000 to $59,000. Clearly, America’s Muslims are not supporting this group — and I’m happy to hear about it.

Of course, every silver lining seems to have a cloud; and this cloud is that CAIR’s spending is running about $3 million a year. They’ve opened 25 new chapters in major cities across the country even as their dues shrank to a pittance. The question is; who’s funding CAIR?

CAIR’s not saying. The New York Times earlier this year reported that the backing is from “wealthy Persian Gulf governments” including the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Obviously, we have a bigger problem here than the one with CAIR.

“HUMANITARIAN CRISIS” by Fern Sidman

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

As of June 20, the situation of a Hamas controlled Palestinian state in Gaza appears to be rapidly deteriorating into a major humanitarian crisis for Palestinian refugees seeking to escape. According to a JTA report, a United Nations relief agency announced that, “Palestinians in the cut-off Gaza Strip could face food shortages within two weeks. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a report issued Wednesday that supplies of necessities like flour, rice and oil to Gaza could be choked off entirely unless Israel reopens a commercial crossing that was sealed after Hamas seized control of the territory last week. “The reopening of Karni crossing is vital to prevent general food shortages in 2-4 weeks,” the report said. Israel, with foreign support, has declared it will isolate the Hamas administration in Gaza while maintaining vital supplies to the general Palestinian populace. Several truckloads of food and medical supplies were allowed into the territory Tuesday.”

The Associated Press reported on June 20 that, “Some 200 Palestinians hoping to flee Gaza were still huddled in a concrete passageway at the Erez border crossing, the main conduit between Gaza and Israel that has been closed since the start of the Hamas takeover. The Israeli military said a teenager with leukemia and four other Palestinians in need of medical care were allowed to cross Wednesday. Israel also allowed in all foreign nationals living in Gaza. Military spokesman Shadi Yassin said buses brought over some 90 Ukrainians, and Russia’s ITAR-Tass news agency reported the evacuation of 69 Russian and seven Belarusian citizens was completed. The Red Cross coordinated the transfer Tuesday of seven Palestinians who had been wounded in the Gaza fighting and hoped to arrange for six to nine more to cross, spokesman Bernard Barrett said. The U.N. World Food Program, meanwhile, began trucking in 225 metric tons of food into Gaza through Israel, in addition to 200 metric tons of food and medical supplies sent in Tuesday.”

It has also been reported that the United States has lifted the economic sanctions that it had imposed on the PA government while Hamas was in power. According to a JTA release of 6/19, “The United States is re-establishing full ties with the Palestinian Authority and resuming assistance at levels that existed before Hamas assumed governance. Condoleezza Rice, the U.S. secretary of state, said she spoke Monday with the new P.A. prime minister, Salam Fayyad, and congratulated him on assuming his post — a result of the disillusion of the Hamas-led government by P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas. Fayyad will still serve as finance minister. “I told him the United States would resume full assistance to the Palestinian government and normal government-to-government contact,” Rice said at a State Department briefing. Rice said the United States would continue to funnel emergency funds to the Gaza Strip, where Hamas is now in full control, through the U.S. Relief and Works Agency. She said $40 million in emergency relief was on its way.”

The government of Israel is also planning to release frozen tax revenue to the Abbas emergency government on the condition that the money will not reach the Hamas administration in Gaza. JTA reports that, “Reuters quoted Israeli officials as saying Tuesday that there plans to transfer as much as $400 million in tax revenues directly to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ new emergency government. “Gaza is a terrorist-controlled entity now,” an Israeli official said. “No financial assistance can go to any entity or person with connections to the Hamas-run administration in Gaza.” The embargo would not include humanitarian supplies to Gaza, which Reuters reported could be stepped up.”

LOOK WHO IS CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK

Meanwhile, back in Ramallah, the Associated Press (6/20) reports that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas lashed out at the Islamic militants of Hamas on Wednesday, accusing them of trying to build an “empire of darkness” in the Gaza Strip and pledging he would not negotiate with the “murderous terrorists.” Addressing Palestinians for the first time since Hamas seized control of Gaza a week ago, Abbas said Hamas had attacked “national symbols” during the fighting in the coastal territory, including ransacking the house of the late PLO leader Yasser Arafat. Several hours before Abbas’ speech, Israel fired missiles and sent tanks on a foray into Gaza, killing four Palestinians in the deadliest military action since Hamas militants took control there. Two more militants were killed by Israeli army fire in a shootout in the West Bank. After nightfall, the Palestinians hit back with a barrage of rockets at the southern Israeli town of Sderot. First Hamas, then Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility. One rocket struck a house, and Israel TV said two Israelis were slightly wounded.”

It would appear that we’re living in a world gone totally mad. Both the United States and Israel are now placing their hopes for a long lasting “peace” between Israel and her Palestinian neighbors in the hands of arch terrorist Mahmoud Abbas. While the US and Israel are attempting to reconcile their desire for peace while simultaneously attempting to isolate Hamas, it is clear that the terrorist record of Fatah, under the leadership of Abbas has been vanquished. Fatah, and it’s military wing, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade was under the command of jailed leader Marwan Barghouti who was arrested by Israeli authorities in April of 2002, charged with the murder of 26 people and belonging to a terrorist organization. The group has carried out numerous operations against Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank and Gaza, and suicide attacks on civilians inside Israel.

According to a report by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated May 2, 2002, “Marwan Barghouti, the head of the Fatah in the West Bank, stated when questioned that he was personally involved in directing terrorist attacks which resulted in the killing and injuring of scores of Israeli civilians. Barghouti described in detail the transfer of funds to the terrorist operatives. As the Secretary-General of the Fatah, Barghouti was responsible for providing the funding for weapons acquisition and armed operations. Every operative requiring financing was made to fill out a detailed requisition request. Barghouti then added his recommendation and signature, and relayed the requests to PA Chairman Yasser Arafat. Barghouti stressed that every expense – even the smallest sum – required the approval of Arafat himself. After receiving Arafat’s approval, the funding was transferred to the operatives according to the instructions of Hakem Bil’awi, the Secretary of the Fatah Central Committee, who was responsible for disbursements. In addition to Barghouti, other senior Fatah figures, who were subordinate to Barghouti, provided details about Arafat’s role in the execution of terrorist attacks.”

The report went on to say that, “Nasser Aweis, the head of the Fatah infrastructure in Samaria, was responsible for the recruiting, arming and handling of terrorist cells. He stated in questioning that he personally, together with other Tanzim terrorist operatives under his command, received funding directly approved by Yasser Arafat. He explained that the names of the Tanzim terrorist operatives were sent to Marwan Barghouti, who would then present their requests for funding to Arafat for his signature. The operatives would subsequently receive checks corresponding to the approved sum.

Nasser Aweis admitted to having been behind numerous terrorist bombings and shootings in Israel, among them:

  • 17 January 2002 – A bombing attack at a banquet hall in Hadera, in which 6 Israelis were killed and 26 wounded.
  • 22 January 2002 – A shooting attack in downtown Jerusalem, in which two Israelis were killed and 36 wounded.
  • 25 February 2002 – A shooting attack in Neve Yaakov, Jerusalem, in which an Israeli policewoman was killed, and 10 civilians wounded.
  • 5 March 2002 – A shooting attack on the ‘Seafood Market’ restaurant in Tel Aviv, in which three Israelis were killed.
  • 9 March 2002 – A gun and grenade attack in the Margoa Hotel in Netanya, in which two Israelis were killed and 50 wounded.
  • If the United States and Israel needed something to refresh their memory of the terrorist activities of Fatah, they need not look further. We would be foolish to believe that Fatah has moderated its position on the destruction of Israel. While currently at odds with Hamas, reports emanating from Hamas leadership indicate that they believe the military and economic support being funneled to Fatah will eventually reach them in Gaza.

According to a report from Arutz Sheva news service of 6/20, “A senior Hamas terrorist told WorldNetDaily that Hamas is encouraged by the funding and arming of Fatah in Judea and Samaria – as the Islamist group is certain it will inherit those weapons and funds just as it did when it took over Gaza. “Like the American weapons in Gaza we told you would come to Hamas, also the weapons and aid the Americans are giving to Abu Mazen (Abbas) as part of their conspiracy against us in the West Bank will find its way to the Palestinian resistance and Hamas,” Hamas’s Abu Abdullah said. He would not say whether Hamas was planning to take over Judea and Samaria from Fatah in the near future, but said he “hopes” that the US continues to provide large quantities of weaponry to Fatah so Hamas can inherit them. Hamas is currently “swimming” in American weapons seized last week from Fatah facilities, according to Abdullah.”
