“More Lies and Hypocrisy” by Jack Kinsella

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

It turns out that Scooter Libby won’t spend thirty months in jail for having a bad memory about a two year old telephone conversation. President Bush commuted his jail term — but not his conviction — sparing Libby from doing time in the slammer.

For those who have been living on a desert island, Lewis Libby was convicted of lying to a grand jury after he gave conflicting testimony as to the contents of phone conversations he had with several reporters about whether or not he mentioned that the wife of a controversial administration critic was a CIA officer.

A special prosecutor had been appointed to investigate who leaked Valerie Plame’s name to Washington columnist Robert Novak.

Here is where it gets interesting. Before the investigation began, the special prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, already knew who the leak was — and he knew it wasn’t Scooter Libby or anybody else within the administration.

It was Richard Armitage, a career diplomat at the State Department. When Armitage came forward to confess, both he and Novak were sworn to secrecy by Fitzgerald, who proceeded with the investigation anyway.

At issue was whether or not the administration had leaked Plame’s name to the press to get even with her husband, Joe Wilson, for his opposition to the Iraq war. Armitage was an ally of Wilson and Plame, not the White House. Armitage opposed the Iraq war and was not an administration official.

It should have been the shortest special investigation in Washington history. Instead, Fitzgerald proceeded as if he didn’t know the answer. Over the course of a drawn out grand jury investigation seeking answers Fitzgerald already had, Libby gave conflicting testimony and was indicted for perjury.

It is important to remember three things. First, there was no reason for the investigation, since the source of the leak was known before it began. Second, the leak itself wasn’t illegal. Revealing Plame’s affiliation with the CIA was bad form, but not criminal.

Third, and most significantly, Libby wasn’t the source of the leak in the first place.

The only reason for proceeding was to try and ‘get’ the administration. When Libby was convicted, he was sentenced as if he were guilty of the ‘crime’ that he had originally been accused of.

He was sentenced to thirty months in prison, a quarter-million dollar fine, and a felony conviction that ended his career in government service.

By comparison, when Sandy Berger pleaded guilty to stealing classified documents relevant to the 9/11 investigation, he was fined fifty thousand dollars, 100 hours community service instead of a jail sentence and his security clearance was TEMPORARILY suspended.

No charges were filed against Berger for lying federal investigators, despite the fact he gave five distinct versions of the story.

Martha Stewart went to jail for lying. Libby was sentenced to 30 months for lying. In both cases, the investigation cleared them of the crimes they were being investigated for. They were sentenced for lying to investigators.

Berger not only lied about it, he was actually guilty of the underlying crime.

Libby’s case was a political witch hunt, plain and simple. So, when Libby exhausted all appeals, Bush commuted his sentence.

Bush didn’t pardon Libby. He commuted his jail time. Libby is still a convicted felon with a quarter-million dollar fine to pay. (Unlike Sandy Berger, Libby is NOT a multimillionaire)

Reaction was predictably predictable and would almost be funny if it weren’t so breathtakingly hypocritical. Barack Obama issued the following statement:

“This decision to commute the sentence of a man who compromised our national security cements the legacy of an Administration characterized by a politics of cynicism and division, one that has consistently placed itself and its ideology above the law.”

Obama wasn’t talking about Sandy Berger when he spoke of compromising national security. He wasn’t talking about Bill Clinton when he spoke of an administration placing itself above the law.

He was talking about a guy convicted of not remembering a two year old phone conversation about a ‘crime’ that wasn’t illegal.

Joe Wilson, whose credibility was so seriously compromised that the 9/11 Commission formally discounted it as “unreliable”, called on Congress to “conduct an investigation of whether or not the president himself is a participant in the obstruction of justice.”

Senator Dick Durbin, who famously compared American forces to Nazis, offered this bit of indignant drivel:

“When it comes to the law, there should not be two sets of rules – one for President Bush and Vice President Cheney and another for the rest of America. Even Paris Hilton had to go to jail. No one in this administration should be above the law.”

(Paris Hilton may have gone to jail. But Sandy Berger didn’t.)

Nancy Pelosi promised America the most ‘ethical Congress in history’. Then she endorsed Rep.Jack Murtha, (named an unindicted co-conspirator in the Abscam Scandal in the 80’s) as House Majority leader in 2006.

She opposed the investigation of William Jefferson, who was indicted of racketeering and bribery. She lobbied to appoint him chairman of the Homeland Security Committee — even after the feds found $90,000 in bribe money hidden in his freezer.

In 2004, Pelosi was herself found guilty of illegally accepting campaign donations and fined $21,000 by the FEC. (Note to Senator Durbin: She didn’t go to jail, either.)

Pelosi greeted the news that Scooter Libby wasn’t going to prison for thirty months by saying:

“By his action today, the president shows his word is not to be believed.”

(If there was room, I’d be rolling on the floor laughing at that one.)

Presidential candidate John Edwards, the multimillionaire lawyer who campaigns on the premise of two Americas, one for the rich and the other for guys like him that get $400 haircuts, said:

“Only a president clinically incapable of understanding that mistakes have consequences could take the action he did today. President Bush has just sent exactly the wrong signal to the country and the world.”

My favorite quote came from Hillary Clinton. This is the same Hillary Clinton who orchestrated the firing of the entire White House Travel staff so she could hire her Hollywood mogul friends Harry Thomason and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason.

She lied so often about the affair that super-liberal New York Times columnist William Safire wrote that many Americans were coming to the “sad realization that our First Lady—a woman of undoubted talents who was a role model for many in her generation—is a congenital liar.”

Hillary Clinton presided over a White House so well known for its cronyism that it gave rise to the epithet, ‘FOB’ (Friend of Bill) to describe the sweetheart deals that were regularly doled out to, well. FOBs.

Of Libby’s commutation, Hillary Clinton said this:

“This commutation sends the clear signal that in this administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice.”

Honest! She really said that! And with a straight face.

It is worth repeating that President Bush did NOT pardon Libby. He simply commuted his jail sentence. Sandy Berger didn’t get a jail term for stealing classified documents and lying about it.

Bill Clinton didn’t get a jail sentence for committing perjury on so many occasions I’ve lost count.

Bill Clinton granted 140 pardons in one day, (his last day in office) including fugitive gun-runner Marc Rich, whose wife later donated $400,000 to the Clinton library. Clinton pardoned his brother, Roger Clinton’s cocaine conviction.

He pardoned Watergate co-conspirator Susan MacDougal after she served 18 months for contempt for refusing to testify about Bill Clinton’s role in the scandal.

All told, Clinton granted 395 full pardons, including family, friends, major donors, political cronies, (including former Democratic Congressman Melvin Reynolds who was convicted of bank fraud, 12 counts of sexual assault on children and solicitation of child pornography.)

Oh, and 16 Puerto Rican terrorists.

President Bush has, in almost seven years in office, granted only 113 pardons. One pardon went to William Eagle, convicted of moonshining in 1972. Another was for George Glenn, who accepted a $50 bribe in 1956 while in the military.

None to family. None to friends. None to donors. None to cronies.

Unless you count commuting Scooter Libby’s 30 month prison term for forgetting what he said on the phone two years earlier.

He should have pardoned him.

Bush Pardons Libby – Hillary Gripes as Usual

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

President Bush has pardoned “Scooter” Libby and wiped away what Bush called an “excessive sentence”. Hillary Clinton was quoted as saying “This commutation sends the clear signal that in this administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice.”

Ever heard the phrase “That’s like the pot calling the kettle black”?
I have come to the determination that Bill and Hillary must have terrible memories, because they never seem to acknowledge their own shortcomings, but highlight the same sins in others.

Click below to see a list of the pardons that were issued by the Clinton administration. If I recall correctly some of these who were pardoned by Clinton were his business associates. Talk about a conflict of interest…..

How A Gay Rights Leader Became Straight By Michael Glatze

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Homosexuality came easy to me, because I was already weak.

My mom died when I was 19. My father had died when I was 13. At an early age, I was already confused about who I was and how I felt about others.

My confusion about “desire” and the fact that I noticed I was “attracted” to guys made me put myself into the “gay” category at age 14. At age 20, I came out as gay to everybody else around me.

At age 22, I became an editor of the first magazine aimed at a young, gay male audience. It bordered on pornography in its photographic content, but I figured I could use it as a platform to bigger and better things.

Sure enough, Young Gay America came around. It was meant to fill the void that the other magazine I’d worked for had created – namely, anything not-so-pornographic, aimed at the population of young, gay Americans. Young Gay America took off.

Gay people responded happily to Young Gay America. It received awards, recognition, respectability and great honors, including the National Role Model Award from major gay organization Equality Forum – which was given to Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien a year later – and a whole host of appearances in the media, from PBS to the Seattle Times, from MSNBC to the cover story in Time magazine.

I produced, with the help of PBS-affiliates and Equality Forum, the first major documentary film to tackle gay teen suicide, “Jim In Bold,” which toured the world and received numerous “best in festival” awards.

Young Gay America created a photo exhibit, full of photographs and stories of gay youth all across the North American continent, which toured Europe, Canada and parts of the United States.

Jews Mourn, Fast on 17th Day of Tammuz

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Continue to pray for the Jewish people, God’s own chosen ones, and the Nation of Israel.

(IsraelNN.com) The Three Weeks of gradually-increasing mourning over the destruction of the Holy Temples and Israel’s exile begin Tuesday, with the fast day of the 17th of the Hebrew month of Tammuz. This is the day on which Nebuchadnezzar and his Babylonian forces breached the walls of Jerusalem, after many months of siege on their way to destroying the Holy Temple.

The Three Weeks end on the 9th of Av – Tisha B’Av – the date on which both the First and Second Temples were destroyed, roughly 2,500 and 2,000 years ago, respectively.

The 17th of Tammuz is also the date on which Moses, having descended Mount Sinai and seeing the people sinning with the Golden Calf, broke the first set of Ten Commandments. During the First Temple Era, the priests were forced on this day – a year before the Temple’s destruction – to stop offering the daily sacrifice due to the shortage of sheep.

In addition, the Talmud tells us, on this date some decades earlier, the evil King Menasheh had an idol placed in the Temple’s Holy Sanctuary. Later, during Second Temple times, a Roman general placed an idol in the same place and publicly burned the Torah.

Excerpts from the morning selichot prayers:

“We rebelled against Him Who dwells in heaven, therefore we were scattered in all directions… We acted rebelliously before Thee with slandering tongues, therefore our tongues were made to learn to utter lamentation… The tempest-tossed afflicted people were utterly broken up and dispersed; the dry land became a boat wrecked for lack of a captain; she received [punishment] for her sins with principal and double interest, with mourning and moaning… Their adversaries assailed them on that day and… drove the nation like a chased gazelle, and there was none that sought to protect it… Turn to us, O Thou that dwellest on high, gather our dispersed from the four corners of the earth; say to Zion, Arise! And we shall arise. Convert the 17th of Tammuz into a day of salvation and comfort.” (translation by Rev. Abraham Isaac Jacob Rosenfeld)

In honor of the day, and in view of the difficult situation Israel faces, the Chief Rabbinate issued the following call:

It is a time of trouble for Israel: Israel’s enemies sound off and lift their heads in arrogance and conceit, opening their mouths wide with threats and terrorization. They boast of their desire to destroy the Jews; “they have consulted together with one another and made a pact against G-d… saying, Let us cut off Israel” (Psalms 83), and wish to war with us even as we are geared for peace.

We are in dire need of G-d’s mercy and salvation; we have none on whom to lean except for our Father in Heaven. We must redouble our Torah study and observance of the Torah’s commandments, with even greater strength and greater devotion – for “they come with chariots and horses, but we come calling in the Name of G-d” (Psalms 20).

We therefore hereby call upon the Nation of G-d to gather in synagogues on Tuesday, the Fast of the 17th of Tammuz, an hour and a half before the afternoon Mincha prayer, for the recitation of selichot [penitential prayers] and Psalms. Let us cry out with all our strength, and call to our G-d and the G-d of our fathers from the depths of our heart – for “G-d is close to all who call upon Him in truth” (Psalms 145).

May our cries arise before Him, and may G-d arise from His chair of strict justice and sit upon the chair of mercy. May He guide and lead us with compassion and kindness, for G-d’s salvation can come in the blink of an eye. And may we see the fulfillment of this verse: “I will give peace in the Land, and you will lie down to sleep without fear… and no sword will pass through your Land.” May this occur speedily in our days, Amen.

Signed and sealed:
Shlomo Moshe Amar, the Rishon LeTzion, the Chief Sephardic Rabbi of Israel
Yona Metzger, the Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Israel.

British Islamic Association Leader Blames Salman Rushdie for Terror Attacks

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

This from Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs. We were expecting nothing less from the ever so “peaceful” Islamic terrorist of the U.K.

Iran’s Alalam News interviews the head of the “Britain Islamic Association” (a group I’m not familiar with, and couldn’t find on the web), who denies Muslims were involved in the terror attacks of the past few days, whines that they’re going to be unfairly targeted, then says that if Muslims did commit the attacks (nudge nudge, wink wink) Salman Rushdie is to blame: UK Muslims Facing More Threats. (Warning: the link goes to an Iranian site, and they often contain viruses or other malware.)

It’s the Islamic trifecta—denial, whining, and veiled threats.

LONDON, July 1—Head of Britain Islamic Association said here on Sunday that the situation of Muslims in Britain would be deteriorated in results of finding several bombs in two suspected cars which were to target the Glasgow airport. In an exclusive interview with Alalam, Al-Sayyed Farjani said while Britain Muslims are strongly condemning the terrorist attacks, unfortunately there are always charges against the Muslims accusing them of involving in these attacks.

Referring to the vital role of Muslims in fighting against terrorism and extremism as well as encountering with violence against the innocent people in Britain, the official said while no group has claimed the responsibility of bombings yet; some extremist parties are trying to accuse the Muslims.

Farjani also strongly condemned the knighthood conferred on Salman Rushdie, adding this odious behavior could have be a main factor in preparing the ground for the youth to join terrorist groups.

Five Doctors Held Over Attacks

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

As yet another example of how perverted Islam is, five of the people being held concerning the terror attack attempts in the U.K are doctors. These are people who are supposed to committed to healing people, yet these five had no problem with attempting to kill and maim a huge number of innocent people, including women and children.
This is the perversion that is Islam.

Five doctors are now being held in connection with the recent attempted terror attacks – one is an Iraqi doctor who trained in Baghdad.

Sky sources named him as Iraqi Bilal Abdulla – he was left relatively unscathed in an attack on Glasgow airport, in which two men drove a flaming jeep into the airport terminal.

Two doctors were arrested in Paisley, Glasgow, another in Liverpool and one on the M6 on Saturday night.

Abdulla was pictured being led away from the explosion by police and worked at the Royal Alexandra Hospital near Glasgow.

The other man detained at Glasgow airport had severe burns and remains in a critical condition at the Royal Alexandra.

Police used two controlled explosions to detonate two suspect cars outside the hospital.

Eight people are now being held by police in connection with the attempted bombing in Scotland and two car bombs found in London’s West End.

They were arrested at locations throughout the UK.

Police have been given another five days to question the two men arrested at Glasgow airport and until Saturday to quiz three people held at Paddington Green police station in west London.

One of those, Dr Mohammed Asha, 26, was arrested on the M6 on Saturday night.

The Jordanian was detained with a woman of 27 dressed in traditional Muslim dress, believed to be his wife, on the M6 near Sandbach in Cheshire.
