“Wildfires and Environmental Obstructionism” by Michelle Malkin

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Nearly 300,000 Southern California residents have now been evacuated as wildfires spread across the region:

Thousands more residents were ordered to evacuate their homes Tuesday, bringing the number of people chased away by the wind-whipped flames that have engulfed Southern California to at least 270,000.

The dozen wildfires have burned more than 700 homes and set 245,957 acres — 384 square miles — ablaze, and the destruction may only be the start for the region. Tuesday’s forecast called for hotter temperatures and more explosive Santa Ana gusts.

The blazes bedeviled firefighters as walls of flame whipped from mountain passes to the edges of the state’s celebrated coastline, spreading so quickly that even hotels serving as temporary shelters for evacuees had to be evacuated.

Wanda Tomkinson, 79, fled the Doubletree hotel in Del Mar with her husband and their Boston Terrier after employees called each room to tell customers they had to leave. The couple, carrying medication, clothes, tax records and a dog bowl, said they were relying on a family friend to take them in.

If not, Tomkinson added, “the Lord’ll take care of us.”

As the fires spread, most out of control, smaller blazes were merging into larger, more fearsome ones. Evacuations were being announced in one community after another as firefighters found themselves overwhelmed by gale-force Santa Ana winds, some gusting to 70 mph.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is calling up the National Guard and asking for military support. President Bush has declared a state of emergency.

We’ve been here before and we’ve been warned that these disasters will continue. Just last month, experts were calling on Congress to expedite forest thinning and other forest managment alternatives:

Wildfires thrive in hot, dry weather. But the conditions also contribute to the die-off of trees, which must compete for water in forests that have become unnaturally dense because of a century of misguided fire suppression. Once dead and brittle, the trees become more fuel for catastrophic fires.

The panelists testified that more resources are needed to keep up with necessary tree thinning and removal campaigns. One witness, University of Arizona Professor Thomas Swetnam, said even that won’t be enough to reverse the trend.

“I don’t think we can thin our way out of this,” Swetnam said.

He said more prominent use of intentionally set fires to mimic naturally occurring blazes has certain risks, but is less costly than mechanical thinning with hand crews and chainsaws.

Environmentalists blame global warming for the problem, but guess who’s standing in the way of a solution?

Litigious environmentalists:

The GAO examined 762 U.S. Forest Service (USFS) proposals to thin forests and prevent fires during the past two years. According to the study, slightly more than half the proposals were not subject to third-party appeal. Of those proposals subject to appeal, third parties challenged 59 percent.

Appeals were filed most often by anti-logging groups, including the Sierra Club, Alliance for Wild Rockies, and Forest Conservation Council. According to the GAO, 84 interest groups filed more than 400 appeals of Forest Service proposals. The appeals delayed efforts to treat 900,000 acres of forests and cost the federal government millions of dollars to address.

Forest Service officials estimate they spend nearly half their time, and $250 million each year, preparing for the appeals and procedural challenges launched by activists.

“The report demonstrates that the appeals needlessly delay federal efforts to prevent wildfires, and if the process is not streamlined, millions of acres will be lost this summer,” said Senate Energy Committee Chairman Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico).

“The American people will no longer tolerate management by wildfire,” Domenici added.

“This finding is nothing short of appalling, especially when you think of the catastrophic losses suffered in last year’s [2002] horrific fire season alone,” said House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo (R-California).

“These were not only losses of forest, endangered species, and wildlife habitat, they were losses of human life and family property,” Pombo said.

Same old, same old. Lawsuits have tied up the president’s Healthy Forests Initiative passed in 2003.

Prediction: Look to the Bush-bashing Left and the nutroots Democrats to mimic the Kossacks and blame the wildfires on the Iraq war–even as the environuts continue to litigate while the West burns.

Hamas Endangering Palestinian Civilians by Generating Phony Humanitarian Crises

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Hamas is unnecessarily endangering Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip by generating phony humanitarian crises, head of the Gaza Coordination Liaison Administration (CLA) Col. Nir Press said Monday.

On Sunday night, Gaza’s Shifa Hospital claimed that due to tight Israeli restrictions on imports into Gaza, it had run out of anesthetic for surgeries, and as a result had canceled all but the most critical procedures.

In an interview with The Jerusalem Post on Monday, Press dismissed the claims and said that in a meeting he held Sunday afternoon with Palestinian Health Ministry officials he was informed that the hospitals were running “low” on the anesthetic. On Monday morning, less than 24 hours after making the request, Israel transferred 151 nitrous oxide gas balloons to Shifa Hospital.

“It is the Palestinians’ responsibility to order the supplies,” Press said, noting that despite the daily rocket attacks on Israeli towns – on Monday 10 rockets and shells pounded the western Negev – Israel continued to transfer medical goods and supplies into Gaza whenever they were ordered.

Press said that orders were usually placed by the Palestinians days in advance and that Sunday’s sudden announcement “was a spin by Hamas and an attempt to put pressure on Israel by creating a humanitarian crisis.”

He said that the incident resembled Palestinian claims a few months ago that due to Israeli restrictions on the crossings they ran out of gas needed to operate the Gaza power plant and as a result large parts of the Strip were left without electricity for several days. Also then, Press said, Hamas unnecessarily disrupted Palestinian civilians’ lives to try to create an image that a humanitarian crisis was developing in Gaza.

“These are examples of how Hamas wants to create humanitarian crisis,” he explained. “They wait until the last moment and then tell us they are running out of supplies so they can create this image of a crisis.”

Hollywood Turning on Hillary?

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Maybe the liberals have finally realized that Hillary has played a huge part in many illegal acts. According to my dictionary, someone who engages in illegal activity is a criminal.

Hollywood filmmakers normally inclined to support candidates such as Sen. Hillary Clinton are working quietly behind the scenes to put the finishing touches on a documentary alleging the New York Democrat committed felonies to get elected and assisted her husband in defrauding a major donor.

“The producers are essentially liberal Hollywood Democrats who fear exposure and retribution,” said Jim Nesfield, director of the Equal Justice Foundation of America, which is sponsoring the hour-long film, “Hillary Uncensored.”

Over the past two weeks, the trailer for the documentary became the No. 1-most viewed piece on Google’s video site, even though it was unlisted. The 13-minute video was posted July 18 but only recently became exposed through blog references, and it now has more than 860,000 views.

The full film – debuting Friday at Harvard University – tells the star-studded story of business mogul Peter Franklin Paul’s civil fraud suit against former President Clinton.

Paul claims President Clinton destroyed his entertainment company – Stan Lee Media – to get out of a $17 million deal in which he promised to promote the firm in exchange for stock, cash options and massive contributions to his wife’s 2000 campaign. Paul contends he was directed by the Clintons and Democratic Party leaders to foot the bill for a lavish Hollywood gala and fundraiser prior to the 2000 election that eventually cost him nearly $2 million.

The documentary opens with scenes from the Aug. 12, 2000, gala, with Cher singing to an audience of the Democratic Party’s top leaders and A-list entertainers such as Brad Pitt and John Travolta, who were there to salute President Clinton and contribute to Hillary Clinton’s first Senate campaign.

Harry Potter Author: “Dumbledore Was Gay”

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Yet another reason not to read the Harry Potter series.

NEW YORK – With author J.K. Rowling’s revelation that master wizard Albus Dumbledore is gay, some passages about the Hogwarts headmaster and rival wizard Gellert Grindelwald have taken on a new and clearer meaning.

The British author stunned her fans at Carnegie Hall on Friday night when she answered one young reader’s question about Dumbledore by saying that he was gay and had been in love with Grindelwald, whom he had defeated years ago in a bitter fight.

’“You cannot imagine how his ideas caught me, Harry, inflamed me,”’ Dumbledore says in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh and final book in Rowling’s record-breaking fantasy series.

The news brought gasps, then applause at Carnegie Hall, the last stop on Rowling’s brief U.S. tour, and set off thousands of e-mails on Potter fan Web sites around the world. Some were dismayed, others indifferent, but most were supportive.

“Jo Rowling calling any Harry Potter character gay would make wonderful strides in tolerance toward homosexuality,” Melissa Anelli, webmaster of the fan site The Leaky Cauldron, told The Associated Press. “By dubbing someone so respected, so talented and so kind, as someone who just happens to be also homosexual, she’s reinforcing the idea that a person’s gayness is not something of which they should be ashamed.”

“‘DUMBLEDORE IS GAY’ is quite a headline to stumble upon on a Friday evening, and it’s certainly not what I expected,” added Potter fan Patrick Ross, of Rutherford, N.J. “(But) a gay character in the most popular series in the world is a big step for Jo Rowling and for gay rights.”

Parents Search for Clues in Daughter’s Fatal Abortion Clinic Visit

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

More news about the infanticide providers, who have now killed a young lady.

HYANNIS — Eileen and Tom Smith had just sat down to watch the evening news when they received a call no parent ever wants to get. The woman on the other end of the line was hysterical. She said the Smiths’ 22-year-old daughter, Laura, was in the emergency room at Cape Cod Hospital. The doctors were looking for next of kin.

And there was more. Laura Smith had been pregnant for 13 weeks. And, earlier that day, she had been at a clinic that provides abortions.

As it turned out, the Sandwich resident had already died by the time she arrived at Cape Cod Hospital around 6:22 p.m., hospital spokesman David Reilly said.

Just what killed Laura Smith is still pending — a fact that evokes frustration for Eileen Smith and her husband, Tom. And since that horrible phone call on Sept. 13, Eileen Smith has made it her mission to find out who, if anyone, can be held accountable for her beloved daughter’s death.

Eileen Smith wants more information about what led to her daughter’s death. She is now represented by a Boston lawyer who filed a complaint for discovery Oct. 4 in Barnstable Superior Court to obtain medical records and autopsy results.

Once the parent becomes the administrator of the estate, then that person can file for medical records through federal medical privacy law authorizations, Riccio said. Smith is also interviewing medical professionals and friends, searching the Internet and medical databases and reading her daughter’s diary to try to get some answers, she said.

“We didn’t even know our daughter was pregnant,” said Smith, a former Sandwich resident who now lives in Florida.

She said her daughter was engaged and her fiance knew about the pregnancy.

On the day she died, Laura Smith went to the women’s health clinic with her friend Karen Trott of Dennisport, for the first of two appointments that day, Trott said.

Smith received an initial treatment, to prepare for the abortion that would take place later in the afternoon. She was not allowed to drive, so the two women spent the day together, with Trott driving, running errands and talking, Trott said.

At around 4 p.m. Smith and Trott returned to the clinic and waited for Smith to be called into the office.

Trott left for a short time at around 5 p.m., thinking the procedure would be done in about 15 minutes. When she returned she waited and waited, becoming increasingly upset, she said.

“And then all of a sudden (an assistant) comes out and says she’s not breathing,” Trott said. “And I was like, what do you mean she’s not breathing?”

Rescuers from the Hyannis Fire Department were sent to 68 Camp St. at 5:49 p.m. on Sept. 13, performed CPR on an unnamed patient and transferred the person to Cape Cod Hospital, according to a fire official. He could not reveal the name of the patient because of medical privacy laws.

Trott drove to the hospital as well and asked to see Smith but wasn’t allowed to do so. When she asked about Smith’s status, she was told, “It doesn’t look good.”

It was Trott who called Eileen and Tom Smith.

The state medical examiner hasn’t determined the cause of Smith’s death, a state spokesman said. And Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe is awaiting those results before determining whether further action should be taken, he said.

Eileen Smith met with Osathanondh in the lobby of the Boston Harbor Hotel in Boston about 10 days after Laura’s death.

Smith said she learned from Osathanondh that her daughter had a suction-type abortion, and that she was anesthetized during the procedure. She saw the waiver her daughter signed, the permissions she gave and the list of drugs she was given, Smith said.

White House Helped Craft ‘Gay’/Transsexual Rights Bill

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Even our so called “allies” turns on us…

Staff members for President Bush have helped congressional staffers work on “religious exemption” language for a new “anti-discrimination” proposal that actually would codify in federal statutes an anti-Christian bias, and that will make it harder for him to veto, according to an activist group.

“Americans For Truth has learned that a White House official has boasted to pro-family leaders attending a private administration briefing that White House staffers were involved in the negotiations to craft expanded religious exemption language for the new ENDA bill,” according to Peter LaBarbera’s Americans For Truth organization.

“At the briefing, the White House official did not commit to the assembled evangelical leaders that the president would veto [ENDA], saying that they will wait to see the bill’s final language, according to our source. This is troubling in that vetoing ENDA in any form is regarded as a ‘no-brainer’ by pro-family activists, who are counting on Bush to stop it,” he continued

His organization is running a campaign to encourage people to contact the White House to express their opposition to the plan.

“Some religious leaders take comfort in ENDA’s exemptions; we do not,” he continued. “White House involvement in negotiations over ENDA is problematic in that makes it more difficult for President Bush to veto the bill.

“H.R. 3685’s current religious exemption will hardly affect the many ways in which ENDA would erode and destroy the freedom of Americans to act on their deeply held moral beliefs about homosexuality,” he said.

The proposal, for which homosexual and transsexual activists are crusading, “has tremendous potential to criminalize Christianity in the United States by creating federal ‘rights’ based on wrong and destructive lifestyle,” he said. The plan was approved just days ago by the House Education and Labor Committee and is headed for a House floor vote.

As WND reported earlier, proposals such as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act would give special privileges to “gay” and “transgendered” individuals.

“If passed, the bill would grant special employment rights and protected minority status to individuals who define themselves based upon chosen sexual behaviors,” said Matt Barber, a policy analyst with Concerned Women for America, the nation’s largest public policy women’s group.

“It would force employers to abandon their First Amendment civil rights at the workplace door,” he said.

Social conservatives have depended on President Bush to either use a veto, or threaten a veto, to halt the advance of such societal-changing plans being assembled in Congress. He’s already expressed that there’s “no need” for “hate crimes” legislation which also would create special privileges for those who identify themselves with an alternative sexual lifestyle.

But Barber said the “religious exemption” being assembled is anything but. “At best, only churches – and essentially pastors – could be exempt from the provisions of ENDA, and that’s not even guaranteed.”

“All other faith-based organizations – even though which are tax exempt – would be discriminated against under the bill. Groups such as Christian schools, Christian camps, faith-based soup kitchens and Bible book stores would be forced to adopt a view of human sexuality which directly conflicts with fundamental tenets of their faith,” he said.

“ENDA would ultimately give liberal judges the authority to subjectively determine who qualifies for the exemption. It’s the goose that laid the golden egg for homosexual activist attorneys, and it would open the floodgates for lawsuits against employers who wish to live out their faith and even those who don’t,” he said.

LaBarbera said the word that White House staffers have been working on proposals makes the situation worse,

“Failure to veto ENDA would be a devastating defeat for pro-family forces and a huge gift to homosexual lobbyists. Call the president …. and urge him to ‘please publicly pledge to veto ENDA … in any form if it passes Congress,'” he said.

He said it is a dangerous precedent to install in federal law “rights” based on changeable homosexual/bisexual behavior.

“Homosexuality is not a ‘civil right,’ it is a human wrong – one that is redeemable as proven by thousands of contented former homosexuals and ex-lesbians. Our Founding Fathers, infused with a biblical view of fallen man, created limited government that sought to restrain the sinful outworking of men’s hearts … The law once punished sin (e.g., sodomy and anti-abortion laws), so it is preposterous to say that homosexuality affirming laws are necessary to uphold basic ‘constitutional rights,'” LaBarbera said.

“The Prophecy of Adam” by Greg Hardin

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

This is a must read over at Rapture Ready. Let me preface it for you:

This is a work of fiction.

At first glance, you may peruse through this little story and say, “No kidding,” but I have a very good reason for stating this so plainly. In modern society, new writings and religions seem to sprout up like weeds each and every day. Accompanying these are people who hold themselves out as modern day seers and/or apostles who claim some new vision or instruction courtesy of the Most High God. Inevitably, these modern day prognosticators will envision doctrines that are flatly contradicted by the Bible. Although this is not a recent development, it does appear to be on the increase, and since this is so, I have no desire to contribute or even have the appearance of contributing in any way to apostasy. The eternal implications of false teachings and the fate of false teachers are quite evident in the Bible; therefore, I thought long and prayed hard as to how I should begin to explain what led me to write this short story. It was by purposeful intent to mirror and give a modern twist to the Old Testament book of Amos. Given the nature of its content and the confusion that may accompany such a “scriptural” work, I felt it best to be direct about my intentions lest there be any confusion.

Imagine my surprise when God pressed upon me to write, or rather rewrite, the book of Amos. I admit that I was more than a little disappointed, but I was willing to trust that God’s ways might be a little higher than my own and that He just might know what He was doing.

So, I started this adventure by rereading this book of the “minor prophets.” I was certain that it would prove to be as mind-numbing as the first time I read it several years prior. To say the least, I was less than excited, but God’s spirit was quite insistent. I need not have worried.

My experience at reading it again could be summed up in one word. WOW! Isn’t it just like God to make clear what was once opaque and show the incredible beauty and applicability lying therein? I read the nine chapters of Amos not once but twice and each time I was struck by the obvious parallels between the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the United States of America.
