Budget Amendment ‘Threatens’ Border Security Plan

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Our senator, Kay Bailey Hutchison, has stabbed us in the back. According to an article on WorldNetDaily, she has introduced an amendment to the Department of Homeland Security 2008 budget that would remove funding for the already-approved Secure Fence Act, which was adopted with the promise hundreds of miles of physical fencing would help secure the U.S. border with Mexico.
Please contact her immediate and express your opposition to this amendment.

Steve Elliott, the president of Grassfire, says he still wants to know, “Where’s the fence?”

Elliott, in a telephone interview, told WND an amendment submitted by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, for the Department of Homeland Security 2008 budget would gut the already-approved Secure Fence Act, which was adopted with the promise hundreds of miles of physical fencing would help secure the U.S. border with Mexico.

But the budget bill now in a conference committee contains the Hutchinson amendment, and Elliott says it simply would drop the requirement for the security project.

“After the Secure Fence Act of 2006 was signed into law by President Bush in October 2006, millions of Americans had a right to expect a double-layer fence would be built along our border with Mexico,” Elliott said.

“Now, if the Hutchison amendment gets signed into law that fence is never going to be built,” he said.

Elliott said the language of the amendment from Hutchison (S. Amdt. 2466) specifically would exempt the Department of Homeland Security from having to build any fence at all.

The Hutchison amendment reads, in part, ” … nothing in this paragraph shall require the Secretary of Homeland Security to install fencing, physical barriers, roads, lighting, cameras, and sensors in a particular location along an international border of the United States, if the Secretary determines that the use or placement of such resources is not the most appropriate means to achieve and maintain operational control over the international border at such location.”

“By slipping the Hutchison amendment into the DHS funding bill, Hutchison intends to give DHS total discretion to build a fence or to not build a fence in any particular location. That is not what the American people were led to believe would happen when Congress passed the Secure Fence Act in 2006,” Elliott said.

In a special report filed on the Grassfire website titled “Border Fence Funding Hoax of 2006 and 2007,” Elliott argues Hutchison first suggested this type of legislative modification on the very day the Secure Fence Act of 2006 was passed.

“A deal had already been struck to basically un-do the Secure Fence Act before the vote was ever taken,” Elliott said.

In the report, Elliott says the Secure Fence Act was a carefully staged public relations event designed by Republicans “to create the impression that Congress was clamping down on illegal immigration.

“You see, Republicans were just a few weeks away from the ’06 elections and were desperately looking for an issue that would save them from defeat,” Elliott wrote.

Hutchison spokesman Matt Mackowiak objected.

“This statement by Grassfire.org is factually inaccurate,” Mackowiak told WND in an e-mail. “Sen. Hutchison supports the border fence and voted for the Secure Fence Act.”

Mackowiak further told WND that the main purpose of the amendment was to require DHS to consult with the Border Patrol and citizens along the border before beginning construction.

“Sen. Hutchison recognizes that the federal government has limited resources and border patrol agents manning the border know best where to put fencing to prevent illegal immigration and to thwart drug cartels,” Mackowiak told WND. “Those decisions should not be left to legislators who have never even visited our border.”

On Nov. 6, DHS released a “fact sheet” that appears to confirm Elliott’s accusation.

The fact sheet notes that DHS has completed 76 miles of “pedestrian fence” and plans to build 670 miles of “pedestrian fence” by the end of 2008.

Yet, the DHS fact sheet makes no reference to the double-layer fence mandated by Congress in the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

California ‘Gay’ Education Plot Unveiled

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

California continues to force the homosexual lifestyle into the public schools.

On the heels of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s signature on S.B. 777, which opponents describe as a homosexual indoctrination plan for education districts, a pro-homosexual lobbying organization in California has launched its campaign to infuse a “gay” influence into public school curricula.

The Gay Straight Alliance recently forwarded an e-mail to its California chapters with information on how to make sure homosexuality is taught in the state’s schools, and warned that having students and parents simply “tolerate” homosexuality simply is not enough.

“In many schools, learning about LGBTQ issues takes the form of very necessary tolerance education where students are educated about the importance of not discriminating against each other,” according to GSA documents. “Tolerance education is an important first step, but we need to push further.

“Infuse LGBTQ curriculum into history, social science, and literature classes,” is the organization’s plan.

Karen England, a spokeswoman for Capital Resource Institute who publicized the GSA campaign and is a primary organizer behind the Save Our Kids plan to put the issue before voters and ask them to reject it, said this is exactly what she expected of those who wish to promote the homosexual lifestyle.

“The homosexual lobby is active and ambitious. They already have GSA units in many California schools that will oversee the implementation of SB 777,” England said. “As evidenced in the GSA e-mail, their agenda is inclusion in school instruction and activities, regardless of their public assertions of ‘streamlining’ anti-discrimination policies in the law.”

She said the GSA “guide” to be used tells students “that insisting on LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) history in school instruction ‘helps to create schools where students feel safer and more supported.'”

“Utilizing the slogan ‘Let’s Set the Record Straight: History Isn’t’, students are given several action steps to take in accomplishing their ‘curriculum campaign’ goal. These include monitoring classroom instruction to see if LGBTQ individuals are discussed or ‘made invisible’; taking over class to present LGBTQ history lessons and contacting textbook companies to change curriculum,” England noted.

She said no child should be subjected to discrimination, “but incorporating discussions of an instruction about controversial lifestyles in the classroom does not accomplish this goal. Instead, it undermines parental authority over children’s moral upbringing.”

The documentation promotes a classroom discussion of Sylvia Rivera, a “Latina transwoman,” and suggests, “It’s time to take action!”

“Are your teachers teaching about the historical achievements of LGBTQ individuals? Are these issues included in your textbooks?…” the organization wrote. “Take over class! … Lead a discussion about LGBTQ history or present a lesson of your own.”

England said with the pending implementation of S.B. 777, soon such messages will come not from independent advocacy groups such as GSA, but from the state’s superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O’Connell.

“That will be the mandate if our referendum isn’t successful,” she told WND. “It won’t be just some San Francisco school. It will be the San Francisco curriculum and values forced on school districts in California.”

She called the agenda “highly offensive” to most Californians, in fact, “most Americans.”

“Religious background or not, you don’t want these controversial issues discussed in a classroom,” she said.

She said the Save Our Kids campaign is on track, with more than enough petitions in circulation to collect the signatures needed to present the plan to voters.

But she said petition signature collectors now need to be getting the pages of signatures back to the campaign office to be processed and submitted to the state.

She described the citizen response so far as incredible.

“We have people who are saying, ‘Not with my kids, not with my grandkids,'” she said. “Citizens who have never done anything [politically] are setting up tables outside of grocery stores.”

The homosexual promotions suggested a “gay/lesbian teacher as role model,” promoted the life stories of celebrity homosexuals, and suggests study of “The Kinsey Report,” which in 1948 explored “same-sex sexual behavior.”

It also advocates teaching “the truth about historical figures.”

“We will never know how he (Abraham Lincoln) might identity his own sexual orientation if he were alive today…” the group states. “It is good for young people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to know that some of the legends in their history books were more complex than those books make them seem.”

Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute, said, “It is within our reach to defeat SB 777 – the most blatant attempt yet to mandate pro-homosexual and transgender propaganda in schools. We urge all friends of liberty to send CRFI their completed petitions as soon as possible.”

Crippling Midwest Ice Storm Leaves Residents Cold and Powerless; At Least 24 Killed

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Pray for the people affected by this terrible storm.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Stan Turner awoke Tuesday to find not only was his home without power but an ice-coated tree limb had crashed into his classic Mustang. The only heat available for the house came from a fireplace, a wood-burning chimenea on the porch and a gas stove.

“I’ve been scrounging all the wood I can,” he said. “I’m going to get out there and get the bigger limbs down, but the wet weather is what’s making it so bad.”

Turner was among a million utility customers who were struggling without electricity in the nation’s midsection after a massive storm dropped sleet and freezing rain across much of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Iowa. The system has been blamed for at least 24 deaths since it developed last weekend.

Glistening, ice-covered roads contributed to many of the deaths. Downed power lines caused dozens of fires in Oklahoma. And then there was the problem of staying warm because officials cautioned that electricity may not be restored for days, if not weeks.

Pray for New Life Church in the Aftermath of the Shootings

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Continue to pray for the New Life Church’s shooting victims families and friends. This is a terrible situation and they need our support.

Tom Doyle and his family were attending church services at New Life Church in Colorado Springs Sunday morning as the shooting began in the parking lot, and was brought to an end by an armed security guard in the church’s main lobby. In addition to the shooter’s death, two teenage sisters were killed and several people were injured.

Doyle, who works with a ministry known as E3 Partners, a church planting and discipleship organization, says it appears that violence ,which is common against Christians in other nations, may soon directly impact believers in this nation. “I’m kind of surprised we haven’t seen more,” he shares. “Obviously, nobody would want that at all, but I guess I look around the world and see the number of martyrs last year and this year, and the numbers are so extremely high … you’ve just got to [wonder], why should we be isolated from it?”

Doyle says New Life Church needs prayer as it deals with the aftermath of the shooting. “There were about 7,000 people on the campus at that time — [and] lots of people saw things,” he points out. “I have a friend [who was] holding one of the victims who was shot. A lot of young people were there, a lot of kids. And there’s just so much trauma in the church right now. So if you’ll just pray for the families that were affected by this — and it’s a lot of people.”

U.S. House Okays Resolution Recognizing Christianity, Christmas

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

What a pleasant headline to wake up to!

Representative Steve King (R-Iowa) is pleased that his Christmas resolution, recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith, was able to pass on Tuesday night with bipartisan support. H. Res. 847 passed on a 372-9 vote, all “nay” votes coming from Democrats. Ten House members (nine Democratic) voted “present.”

“Watching Congress honor Islam during Ramadan, and also Diwali, which is a Hindu holiday, brought it home to me that we were doing that and not honoring Christianity,” King shares. “I’m Christian by faith and most of us are in Congress.” As are the majority of Americans, three-fourths of whom King says identify themselves as Christians.

“This nation has about 225 million Christians out of the 300 million, and about two billion Christians throughout the world,” he states. “And the foundations of this nation are a Christian foundation [and] our founders were Christian. So for us to move forward towards Christmas without honoring Christ is, I think, a great omission, especially if we’re going to honor other religions.”

Perkins Says Media Attack on Huckabee a ‘Reverse Religious Test’

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

What else could we expect from the liberal media and the liberal left?

A prominent evangelical Christian leader says a “reverse religious test” is being applied to Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee because he believes his Christian faith should impact the way he lives. Tony Perkins says the attempt by elite secularists in the media to subject the surging GOP candidate to that test may not achieve its desired objective.

Mainstream news media outlets have been regurgitating comments Huckabee made as far back as 15 years ago regarding HIV/AIDS and homosexuality. Reporters are branding the ordained Southern Baptist minister’s belief that homosexuality is an “aberrant, unnatural and sinful lifestyle” as “controversial,” and are pressuring the former Arkansas governor to retract a remark he made in 1992 about the need to “isolate the carriers” of AIDS. Media outlets also have been dredging up statements Huckabee made in the past stressing the need to “take this nation back for Christ.”

According to [Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council (FRC) in Washington, DC], many Bible-believing Christians may choose to look past some of their policy differences with Huckabee to “stand by and support a candidate who is being attacked because he believes, as they do, that their Christian faith should impact the way they live.” And if that happens, Perkins predicts that Huckabee’s “meteoric rise” in recent polls “could look miniscule compared to the tsunami of support” he will get from sympathetic Christians.
