Warning to Rich Oppressors

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you.

“The Selective Transparency of Barack Obama” by Michelle Malkin

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Sunlight is for suckers. The New York Post reported on Tuesday that the White House will not release the $328,835 snapshots taken of the president’s Boeing VC-25A that buzzed lower Manhattan. The entire world has seen news and amateur photos and videos of the incident, but if President Obama has his way, taxpayers won’t be able to see the flyover photos they paid for with their own money.

This will make for an interesting response to my Freedom of Information Act requests. After the bizarre mission caused distress and panic among countless New York City residents who were intentionally left in the dark about the photo-op stunt, I filed public records requests with the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Staff FOIA Requester Service Center.

The first one requests any and all communication — including e-mail and other public records and including any and all correspondence between the White House Military Office, Department of Defense and other agencies — related to the planned federal aerial mission over New York City on April 27, 2009. Specifically, I requested all public records related to and including the flight manifests and related to the origin of the request for the mission. The second filing requests any and all photos taken during the planned federal aerial mission approved by the White House Military Office.

What rationale could they possibly use to stifle public disclosure? National security? These were glamour shots to enhance the Air Force One photo portfolio. That’s no secret. The White House ‘fessed up on that. Withholding the photos serves only one purpose: protecting the backsides of those involved in this botched PR mission.

From Day One, Obama has demonstrated a rather self-serving selectivity when it comes to transparency. The Obama White House rushed to reverse an 18-year ban photographing the flag-draped coffins of troops arriving back on American soil. And at the behest of the American Civil Liberties Union, his administration is set to release at least 21 classified photographs by May 28 showing detainee abuse in prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan. Openness in government is fine if it hurts America’s reputation, but not if it harms Obama’s.

Moreover, hostility to transparency is a running thread through Obama’s cabinet:

— Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for years fought disclosure of massive donations from foreign governments and corporations that filled her husband’s library and foundation coffers.

— Top Obama adviser David Axelrod ran fear-mongering campaigns in support of a huge utility rate hike — and failed to disclose that the ads were funded for Commonwealth Edison in Chicago.

— Labor Secretary Hilda Solis failed to disclose that she was director and treasurer of a union-promoting lobbying group pushing legislation that she was co-sponsoring.

“Mere Diversity: The Loss of Serious Society” by Jim Tonkowich

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

The Church of England’s Michael Nazir-Ali served for fifteen years as Bishop of Rochester. In a column in the Telegraph (UK) entitled “Ignore our Christian Values and the Nation will Drift Apart”, Bishop Nazir-Ali reflected on those years. What he has seen seems to be killing the very idea of Great Britain and can serve as a stern warning for those of us in the United States. He writes:

During that time, I have watched the nation drift further and further away from its Christian moorings. Instead of the spiritual and moral framework provided by the Judaeo-Christian tradition, we have been led to expect, and even to celebrate, mere diversity. Not surprisingly, this has had the result of loosening the ties of law, customs and values, and led to a gradual loss of identity and of cohesiveness.

“Mere diversity” as opposed to “mere Christianity” is by its nature content-free. Diversity celebrates the notion that, ultimately, truth is unknowable and so everyone’s ideas and “values” are as good as everyone else’s. You may not agree, but at least that statement is coherent.

The trouble is, as Nazir-Ali points out, that politicians and activists try to build a public life and public morality on the contentless chaos of diversity. This call is incoherent and, in the final analysis, dishonest.

Regarding its incoherence, as Nazir-Ali points out:

Some faiths may emphasise social solidarity more than personal freedom, others publicly enforce piety over a nurturing of the interior life and yet others stress honour and shame rather than humility, service and sacrifice. It may be, of course, that there is a useful overlap among these traditions in terms of values by which to live. It may also be that people of different faiths can “own” many of the values produced by a Christian framework in this nation, but this cannot take place in a vacuum.

Yet it is in the vacuum, we are told, we must to work to create a foundation for society. If truth is unknowable, there is no choice but to create ex nihilo.

On the same theme, Hadley Arkes, the Ney Professor of Jurisprudence at Amherst College notes:

In our own time, “tolerance” and “multiculturalism” begin by receding from the casting of judgments. The New Tolerance disclaims any monopoly on truth, moral or religious, and in fact it disclaims any ground of knowing anything reliably about the things that are right and wrong.

No White House Ceremony to be Held on Nat’l Day of Prayer

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

WHITE HOUSE – This Thursday, for the first time in nine years, there won’t be a White House ceremony in observance of the National Day of Prayer.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says President Barack Obama will pray privately as he does every day, but his only public acknowledgement will be to issue a White House proclamation.

Republican Congressman Randy Forbes, co-chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, says a proclamation urging Americans to pray would be more meaningful if the president set a public example.

Syria and Iran United Against Israel

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Same song, next verse…

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday his country and Syria are united behind Palestinian “resistance” to Israel, taking a tough tone as he met with his top Arab ally, Syria’s president.

Ahmadinejad was expected to meet with the chiefs of Hamas and other Palestinian groups during his visit to Damascus, said Khaled Abdul-Majid of the Popular Struggle Front said. Iran is a strong supporter of militant Islamic groups in the region, including Hamas and Lebanon’s Hizb’allah.

Ahmadinejad’s visit to Syria comes as the US is trying to improve strained ties with the two longtime adversaries. But it could turn out to be another reminder of what a divisive role he plays on the world stage.

Sitting alongside Syrian President Bashar Assad at a press conference, Ahmadinejad said the two countries’ alliance was achieving “victories” in preventing “the big powers’ offensive to dominate the region.”

“Syria and Iran have been from the very beginning united and in agreement to stand on the side of the Palestinian resistance,” Ahmadinejad said. “They will continue to do so. We see that the resistance will continue until all occupied territories are liberated.”

Narcissist in Chief

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

He may be the most mysterious and secretive president in American history.

Though inexperienced and arguably unqualified for the presidency, he mesmerized the entire establishment press and more than half of voters, many regarding him nothing short of a political messiah. Though he can barely speak publicly without a teleprompter, he’s praised as a transcendent communicator. Though his voting record is extreme left, he portrays himself as a pragmatic centrist.

But beyond Obama’s political ideology, many Americans are troubled also by his strange personality attributes: He greatly exaggerates his achievements, expects constant praise and admiration, believes he’s special, doesn’t appear to concern himself with other people’s feelings, expresses disdain for those he feels are inferior, sets unrealistic goals, appears as tough-minded and unemotional, and other qualities – all of which are textbook symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Indeed, the word “narcissist” is increasingly being applied to America’s 44th president. Pulitzer prize-winning columnist and former psychiatrist Charles Krauthammer asks, “Does the narcissism of this man know no bounds?” Jack Kelly, journalist and former high-ranking Reagan administration Pentagon official, says: “The most dangerous thing about having a narcissist in a position of power is his unwillingness – perhaps his inability – to ever admit error. … Obama acknowledged the troop surge in Iraq has produced dramatic improvements, but said he still would oppose it.” Radio giant Rush Limbaugh said of Obama recently: “He’s supremely narcissistic … This is all about him. This has nothing to do with the country. It has nothing to do with our way of life. Every aspect of his presidency is about building him up, making him appear to be savior, messiah …”

“I think it’s critically important, now more than ever, to understand our president’s core beliefs and to realize that if we embrace them fully, we’ll be well on our way to becoming the U.S.S.A. (Union of Soviet Socialist America, a play of words on the former Soviet Union, or U.S.S.R. -ed.),” says Brian Russell, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist, attorney and familiar national television pundit. And according to Lyle H. Rossiter Jr., M.D., a board certified psychiatrist who has diagnosed and treated mental disorders for more than 40 years, it’s not just Obama: America’s leadership ranks are full of people with serious psychological problems, declaring that “the modern liberal mind, its distorted perceptions and its destructive agenda are the product of disturbed personalities.”

Parts of Obama’s Green Energy Plan Fuel Discontent Among Environmentalists

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

The insanity of this situation is laughable. The lives these “green” activist live must be full of chaos, in everlasting confusion and battle with their ever changing emotions. Rational thought and logic, for these people, are completely unknown concepts.

A key part of President Obama’s energy plan — replacing fossil fuels with green alternatives — is facing increasing opposition from an unlikely source: environmentalists.

Some environmentalists, who have successfully fought a wind farm on the border of Oregon and Washington, are trying to block a massive solar plant in the Mojave desert. And now an Oregon county is considering a ban on wind power in the foothills of the blue mountains.

“We all want to be as green as we can be. But at what cost?” Richard Jolly of the Blue Mountain Alliance. “To take everything from us? This valley could be surrounded by them.”

Jolly says 400-foot wind turbines are a bird-killing eyesore. The developer argues the danger to birds is exaggerated but admits every big energy project has its downside.

“If we hold out for the perfect environmental silver bullet, if you will, it will always be 15 years down the road,” he said. “We have to make incremental progress.”

For decades, environmental groups have talked about “big oil,” painting the petroleum industry as greedy and destructive. Now similar language is being applied to renewables. Instead of eco-friendly green power, increasingly it’s “big wind” and “big solar.”

Large environmental groups, such as the Natural Resources Defense Council, bristle at the idea of dissension in the ranks.

“We are working very aggressively to make a planning process happen with utilities, with industry, with local groups all at the table,” said Rick Duke, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Center for Market Innovation.

Obama has set a goal of getting 25 percent of the nation’s power from renewable sources by 2025. The White House contends that will create millions of jobs and has the support of business and environmental leaders.

But many local activists say we need to slow this rush to renewables or risk trading one power problem for another.

New ‘Hate-Crimes’ Legislation ‘Shocks the Conscience’ (Content Warning)

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

In their attempt to ram homosexuality down everyone’s throats, the House has passed a bill that will protect bestiality (the rape of animals) and pedophilia (the rape of children) among a huge list of other deviant sexual behaviors.
How did we reach this point, folks? Common decency no longer exist. The deviants are in control.

The House of Representatives passed legislation last week to add sexual orientation and gender to the list of categories covered by federal “hate-crimes” laws.

“Pedophilia is one of the scores of sexual orientations that are included, that are protected, that are granted special preferred status under this legislation to the exclusion of other classifications of people,” says Matt Barber of Liberty Counsel.

Republican opponents of the legislation claim Democrat supporters of the measure are not being clear about who exactly will receive special protections under the bill.

“Bestiality, pedophilia … pick your poison,” adds Barber.

He says the legislation “shocks the conscience” and is clearly unconstitutional because it “guarantees unequal protection under the law.”

“It’s denying protections for veterans, for homeless people, for the elderly that it’s granting pedophiles.”

Democrat Sens. Edward Kennedy and Patrick Leahy have produced matching legislation in the U.S. Senate and President Obama supports the measure.
