Congressmen Send Letter Blasting White House “Health Reform” Infomercial on ABC

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Any credibility the mainstream media may have had is completely gone. They are truly Emperor Obama’s Department of Propaganda.

A newly formed group of U.S. congressmen called the Media Fairness Caucus fired off a letter of protest to ABC News today over the network’s planned coverage of President Obama’s health care reform initiatives, declaring the scheduled programming “gives the appearance of a state-run television network.”

“Without giving time to an opposing viewpoint,” the letter signed by 40 U.S. representatives states, “ABC News’ programming on June 24 will amount to a day-long infomercial for the president and his government-run health care plan.

“We urge you,” the letter concludes, “to give the American people the facts and let them make up their own minds, not tell them what to think.”

As WND reported, ABC News announced last week that the network will devote hours of news coverage tomorrow to the president’s plan, televise a primetime “town hall” discussion on the topic called “Questions for the President: Prescription for America” and anchor its nightly “World News” program from inside the White House.

Critics raised red flags immediately, especially after it was learned that Republican legislators would not be allowed time on ABC News for rebuttal to the president’s plan.

“This ‘special’ will feature Obama government officials promoting the president’s proposal for government health care. No opposing views are allowed on the program,” said Roger Hedgecock, chairman of the Radio America Free Speech Foundation, in a statement. “For ABC News to present only the Obama government side of this important issue would betray the public interest in a free press.”

The letter from the Media Fairness Caucus, chaired by Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, echoes Hedgecock’s concern:

“The manner in which the news programming is being presented – at the White House with the president and first lady and without opposition – is unprofessional and contrary to the journalistic code of ethics to present the news fairly and independently,” the letter states. “This is not a presidential news conference open to all news outlets. This is an exclusive arrangement from which the president and his viewpoint stand to gain. It’s as if ABC News is providing in-kind free advertising for President Obama.”

The Media Fairness Caucus, however, points out that there is a distinction between the “fairness” that it is calling for in ABC News’ coverage of the health care plan and the equal time restrictions placed upon talk radio and television under the former, government-imposed “Fairness Doctrine”:

“This is not television commentary or talk radio where the public expects to hear conservative or liberal opinions,” the Caucus writes. “Supposedly, this is ABC News presenting unbiased news programming.”

ABC News President David Westin, in turn, responded to the Caucus’ letter with a public letter of his own:

“Contrary to your assertions, this will not be ‘slanted’ in any way – much less a ‘day-long infomercial’ or ‘in-kind free advertising,'” Westin writes. “It will be a thoughtful, respectful, probing discussion of the some of the issues raised by the calls for health care reform. We will include a variety of perspectives coming from private individuals asking the president questions and taking issue with him as they see fit.

“We have already heard at some length (on ABC News and other outlets) from politicians and professional health care lobbyists,” the letter continues. “I can see no reason why we should not hear tomorrow instead from some of the Americans most directly affected by the plans being discussed.”

Westin’s response then accuses “some” of using this controversy as material for “political high theatre.”

“I would have thought that a subject as important as the health care received by the American people would rise above this sorry spectacle,” Westin writes. “We are proud to be making a serious effort to go beyond mere punditry or stylized, bipolar debate.”

In explaining the reason for the formation of the Media Fairness Caucus, Rep. Smith told Fox News Channel’s Bill Hemmer that many members of Congress are worried “about the liberal media bias that we see every single day.”

“The most recent poll says only nine percent of the American public see the media are objective and fair,” Smith said. “They have a huge credibility gap, and two-to-one they think the media are liberal, not conservative.”

He continued, “To me, the greatest threat to America is not necessarily a recession, or another terrorist attack. The greatest threat to America is a liberal media bias. And I think that because, if the American people don’t get the facts, they can’t make good decisions. And if the American people can’t make good decisions, then our democracy is threatened.”

Smith also added, “The media have given the Obama administration a free pass. In fact, President Obama has gotten three times the positive coverage that President Bush got in his first three months in office. There’s very little criticism.”

In somewhat veiled, but clearly related news, the Republican National Committee released today a national cable ad attacking “a national TV network” for “turn[ing] its airwaves over to President Obama’s pitch for government-run health care.”

Iran’s Opposition Calls for New Mass Demonstrations

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Things in Iran could get very bloody before the the election unrest is done.

MOSCOW, June 24 (RIA Novosti) – The Iranian opposition has called for another round of protests on Wednesday night in the wake of the government’s refusal to review the disputed results of Friday’s presidential election, Al Jazeera news agency reported.

The Guardian Council, Iran’s highest legislative body, said on Tuesday it would not annul the results of the presidential vote and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his new Cabinet will be sworn in between July 26 and August 19.

At least 19 protesters were reported killed and hundreds arrested over the weekend following street protests in Tehran over alleged ballot fraud following the landslide reelection of the hardline Ahmadinejad on June 12.

Official results gave the incumbent 63% of the vote, with reformist challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi getting 34%.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki warned Europe and the United States on Sunday against meddling in Iran’s domestic issues.

Negotiations Fall on Mullahs’ Deaf Ears

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Joel Rosenberg is the author of Inside the Revolution: How the Followers of Jihad, Jefferson, and Jesus are Battling to Dominate the Middle East and Transform the World. In a recent column published on, Rosenberg says the Supreme Islamic Leader Ayatollah Khamenei completely and wholeheartedly supports Ahmadinejad’s radical end-times beliefs, including the president’s commitment to destroy Israel and the U.S. in order to hasten the return of mahdi.

“Once you begin to understand who these men are that are running Iran, and that they really do believe that they’ve been chosen by Allah to bring about the end of the world, you realize that negotiations are not going to work,” he contends. “And Israelis see this; the White House doesn’t, but Israelis do.”

So Rosenberg believes Israel is prepared to take action to avoid a second Holocaust. “Yes, Israelis are getting themselves prepared for the possibility that they’re either going to have to strike first and try to neutralize Iran’s nuclear program, or they are going to take a first strike from Iran,” he adds. “And nobody in Israel wants to see a second Holocaust.”

VOTER ALERT: Cap-and-Trade Bill Set for FRIDAY Vote

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

OK folks, contact your congressperson.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the cap-and-trade legislation co-sponsored by California and Massachusetts Democrats Henry Waxman and Ed Markey will likely reach a vote on the House floor on Friday.

This bill is an absolute nightmare, and will result in nothing short of sheer destruction of American business and industry, and will exponentially increase energy costs for individuals and families of all income levels from coast to coast.

For background information, including an assessment of the likely costs of the legislation, check out a previous piece here at America’s Right, The Exponentially Increasing Costs of a Manufactured Environmental Crisis, as well as a companion piece, ‘Green’ Spokesmouths Need to Curb Emissions. A quick breakdown of some of the expected costs:

  • The typical family of four will see its direct energy costs rise by over $1,500 per year.
  • Pain at the electric meter will cause consumers to reduce electricity consumption by 36 percent. Even with this cutback, the electric bill for a family of four will be $754 more that year and $12,200 more in total from 2012 to 2035.
  • The higher gasoline prices will have forced households to cut consumption by 15 percent, but a family of four will still pay $596 more that year and $7,500 more between 2012 and 2035.
  • In total, for the years 2012-2035, a family of four will see its direct energy costs rise by $22,800. These inflation-adjusted numbers do not include the indirect energy costs consumers will pay as producers are forced to raise the price of their products to reflect the higher costs of production. Nor does the $22,800 include the higher expenditure for such things as more energy-efficient cars and appliances or the disutility of driving smaller, less safe vehicles or the discomfort of using less heating and cooling.
  • As the economy adjusts to shrinking GDP and rising energy prices, employment will take a big hit. On average, employment is lower by 1,105,000 jobs. In some years cap and trade reduces employment by nearly 2.5 million jobs.
  • The negative economic impacts accumulate, and the national debt is no exception: Waxman-Markey will drive up the national debt 29 percent by 2035. This is 26 percent above what it would be without the legislation and represents an additional $29,150 per person, or $116,600 for a family of four. To reiterate, these burdens come after adjusting for inflation and are in addition to the $450,000 per family of federal debt that will accrue over this period even without cap and trade.

Find your representative’s office number HERE. Call it. Call it NOW. It doesn’t matter if they are a Democrat, a Republican, or somewhere in between. Let them know that their vote on this disastrous bill is a bona fide determinative factor when it comes to their re-election in 2010. Support means they’re going home, plain and simple.

I cannot stress enough exactly how devastating this piece of legislation is. Frankly, I am absolutely astounded that something so detrimental to our national economy is even being considered nonetheless voted upon, even by Democrats.

This is winnable for concerned Americans like you and like me. Let’s make sure this doesn’t make it out of the House.

ABC Under Fire for Hosting Obama Healthcare “Infomercial”

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

More from Emperor Obama’s Department of Propaganda, aka the Mainstream News Media, specifically ABC.

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 17, 2009 ( – Republican and conservative leaders are up in arms after it was revealed that ABC News would host a primetime special on the Obama administration’s sweeping healthcare overhaul, while the network refused requests from both the GOP and paid advertisers to offer a separate viewpoint.

All of ABC’s June 24 programs are slated to be broadcast at the White House, including “Good Morning America” from the South Lawn and “World News” from the Blue Room.

The primetime special, “Questions for the President: Prescription for America,” will be moderated by Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer. The program will feature President Obama discussing his controversial public healthcare plan and answering questions from audience members pre-selected by the network.

However, no airtime was granted to the Republican National Committee, who requested an opportunity to provide an opposing viewpoint on a plan that conservatives widely decry as irresponsible spending and a threat to quality healthcare.

“As the national debate on health care reform intensifies, I am deeply concerned and disappointed with ABC’s astonishing decision to exclude opposing voices on this critical issue on June 24, 2009,” Republican National Committee Chief of Staff Ken McKay wrote Monday to ABC President David Westin.

“I believe that the President should have the ability to speak directly to the America people. However, I find it outrageous that ABC would prohibit our Party’s opposing thoughts and ideas from this national debate, which affects millions of ABC viewers.”

McKay aired concerns that “in the absence of opposition” the event would amount to “a glorified infomercial to promote the Democrat agenda.”

“If that is the case, this primetime infomercial should be paid for out of the DNC coffers,” he said. “President Obama does not hold a monopoly on health care reform ideas or on free airtime. The President has stated time and time again that he wants a bipartisan debate. Therefore, the Republican Party should be included in this primetime event, or the DNC should pay for your airtime.”

Kerry Smith, ABC’s Senior Vice President, responded on Tuesday by responding to what he called the “false premises” raised in McKay’s letter.

“I hope we can all agree that a robust debate of health care issues and potential policies is in order,” said Smith. “To that end, ABC News announced plans to broadcast a primetime hour from the White House devoted to exploring and probing the President’s position and giving voice to questions and criticisms of that position.

“We hope that any American concerned about health care will find our efforts to be informative, fair and civil.”

Smith said the network “prides itself on covering all sides of important issues and asking direct questions of all newsmakers” from across the political spectrum.

“In the end, no one watching, listening to, or reading ABC News will lack for an understanding of all sides of these important questions,” he said.

According to a Drudge report late Wednesday, ABC is also refusing paid advertisements presenting an alternate opinion to the Obama healthcare programming.

The network has reportedly turned down a request by Conservatives for Patients Rights for the rates of a 60-second advertising slot immediately preceding the primetime broadcast.

“It is unfortunate – and unusual – that ABC is refusing to accept paid advertising that would present an alternative viewpoint for the White House health care event,” stated Rick Scott, chairman of Conservatives for Patients Rights.

“Health care is an issue that touches every American and all potential pieces of legislation have carried a pricetag in excess of $1 trillion of taxpayers’ money. The American people deserve a healthy, robust debate on this issue and ABC’s decision – as of now – to exclude even paid advertisements that present an alternative view does a disservice to the public.

“Our organization is more than willing to purchase ad time on ABC to present an alternative viewpoint and our hope is that ABC will reconsider having such viewpoints be part of this crucial debate for the American people.”
