Stimulus Checks Mistakenly Sent to 1,700 Inmates

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

This type of thing happens, yet we are being asked to let government bureaucrats oversee our health care. Yeah right!! They can’t get anything right!!

The federal government mistakenly sent out stimulus checks to 1,700 inmates, the Social Security Administration said Tuesday — a $425,000 error.

Social Security spokesman Dan Moraski told FOXNews.com in a written statement that the money went out because official records “did not accurately reflect that they were in prison.”

The inspector general’s office for the Social Security Administration is now looking into the problem as part of its broader audit on stimulus spending. The Social Security Administration acknowledged the glitch following a report that nearly two-dozen inmates in Massachusetts had wrongly received the $250 stimulus checks.

Even before the agency disclosed that the problem was more widespread, the discovery prompted complaints from Republicans critical of the $787 billion stimulus and the way it has been managed.

“It is unacceptable for convicts to be getting stimulus funds. It speaks to the lack of oversight and accountability to have such nonsense coming out of Washington. Where is the accountability?” House Minority Whip Eric Cantor said in a written statement.

Though it might strike taxpayers as unusual, some inmates were legally eligible for the stimulus checks.

Under the law, the $250 checks were supposed to be sent to those legally receiving benefits under the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs or the Railroad Retirement Board between November 2008 and January 2009.

So while inmates generally aren’t eligible for Social Security benefits, those who were not incarcerated between November and January got the stimulus checks fair and square.

Moraski said a total of 3,900 inmates not receiving benefits were sent a stimulus check and that of those, 2,200 were due the payment because they were out of prison late last year. The other 1,700 were mistakenly sent the checks.

But Moraski said that the number was “relatively small” given the fact that 52 million total payments were made, and that most of the mistaken payments have been returned by the correctional institutions. He did not provide specifics for how much of the $425,000 had been returned.

The Boston Herald reported the administration is asking for the Massachusetts money back. But Diane Wiffin, a spokeswoman with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, told FOXNews.com that her department tried to alert the Social Security staff months ago when it first discovered that the checks had been sent to 23 inmates.

“It was the DOC’s opinion that the inmates were not eligible for the payments because of their incarceration, and we withheld the checks from the inmates at that time and immediately contacted the federal Social Security Administration,” she said in an e-mail.

But she said that the administration “failed to provide a directive despite several requests,” so the department could no longer withhold the checks from the inmates.

George Penn, a spokesman for the Social Security Administration’s inspector general, said his office is examining the issue and likely will fold the inquiry into part of its audit of stimulus spending.

“(In) our initial analysis, we found that there were some (recipients) that were in prison,” Penn said.

It’s unclear whether beneficiaries thought to be eligible under the Department of Veterans Affairs received the stimulus money mistakenly due to incarceration.

Fix Our Eyes on Jesus

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Israeli Citizens Have the RIGHT to Live Without Terror – Stop Terror Attacks Against the People of Sderot, Israel

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Please remember the plight of the innocent civilians of Sderot, Israel, who face indiscriminate rocket attacks, almost daily, from Pali terrorist. People have the right to live without the fear of terror attacks.

People of Sderot, Israel

Please read these previous posts:
The Qassam Rocket – Pali Terrorist Weapon of Choice, An Overview.
“Qassams Fired on Central California” by Dr. Linda Halderman.

Sderot (Hebrew: שְׂדֵרוֹת‎) is a western Negev city in the Southern District of Israel. According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), at the end of 2006 the city had a total population of 19,300. The city has been an ongoing target of Qassam rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip. In March 2008, the mayor said the population had declined by 10%-15% as families left the city in desperation (aid organizations say the figure is closer to 25%). Many of the families that remain cannot afford to move out or are unable to sell their homes.

9-years old boy Osher Twito lost his leg when he and his big brother Rami were seriously hurt when a Qassam rocket exploded next to them in Sderot.

Sderot, less than a mile from Gaza, has received many Palestinian rocket attacks that have been fired by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. These have killed 13 residents, wounded hundreds, caused millions of dollars in damage, and disrupted daily life as well as the local economy. According to MSNBC, “nearly everyone [has been] traumatized by the frequent sound of air-raid sirens and explosions of incoming projectiles”. All local schools have been fortified. From mid-June 2007 to mid-February 2008, 771 rockets and 857 mortar bombs were fired at Sderot and the western Negev, an average of three or four each a day.

Qassam Rockets Sderot

The last rocket attack on Sderot occurred on 19 May. According to the AP, Sderot has reached a period of relative calm.

“The Thrill is Gone for Obama and The Media” By Chris Stirewalt

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

There’s nothing like a summer vacation to rekindle a romance. So maybe a week on Martha’s Vineyard can bring back some of the magic between the Obama administration and the media.

Before White House press secretary Robert Gibbs left town, he tried to clarify President Barack Obama’s comment that “everybody in Washington gets all wee-weed up.” Gibbs explained to reporters that what the president meant was that they were a bunch of bed wetters who made too much out of the implosion of the White House health care strategy.

Gibbs has grown more sardonic and patronizing as the summer wears on and Obama’s poll numbers wilt.

The press secretary has lectured reporters on the nature of their jobs — apparently to defend the administration against “misinformation” rather than asking impertinent questions like “How will you pay for it?”

When asked recently about the administration’s endless evasions on the public option, Gibbs instead opted to define a monopoly.
“If you had one place to eat lunch before you came to the briefing, do you think it would be cheap?” Gibbs demanded of CNN’s Ed Henry.

Henry should have asked Gibbs to define monopsony: a market in which one buyer is so large that it can control suppliers and ruin competitors. Henry could then explain he’d rather pay too much for the sandwich he wanted than have to eat at a government chow line opened across the street to encourage “competition.”

Gibbs is so crabby because, incredibly, the administration blames the media for the president’s problems.

It tried blaming Republicans, but the GOP is too far out of power. When the leader of the free world is complaining about a posting on the former governor of Alaska’s Facebook page, he’s got problems.

Team Obama tried blaming special interests, but that was a bust too. The president’s deal with the pharmaceutical industry gets him $150 million worth of ads to boost his plan, whatever it is.

The same people who bombard us with ads for products that promise to prevent hardened arteries or encourage hardening elsewhere will soon be selling you Obamacare.

“If you experience doubts about the plan lasting more than four hours, seek immediate help from Organizing for America.”

Democrats tried blaming the “mobs” of “un-American” protesters and “evil mongers” who were giving raspberries to members of Congress at town halls.

That flopped too, leaving the administration to blame the messenger.

And one can understand why Gibbs would be a bit shocked by the slightly less accommodating tone of the media.

Reporters who traveled with the Obama campaign tell horror stories about the organization — dishonesty, rudeness and abysmal access. But those reporters still served up the glowing coverage.

Obama was the hottest news story of their generation. Rather than covering the long-shot freshman senator who would be crushed in February, Obama campaign reporters experienced the reflected glory of being along for a historic journey. There was plenty of motivation to keep that journey going.

Conversely, Obama making a hash out of health care provides plenty of good copy for the White House press corps. And because Obama fatigue has set in with the reading and viewing public, skeptical stories match the national mood.

Some are still in the tank for Obama. But many liberal reporters think the president is blowing the Left’s big chance.

In talking about how everything got so “wee-weed up,” Obama observed that in August of 2008 the media predicted doom because John McCain began to close the gap after picking Sarah Palin.

In trying to explain that the president was talking about media incontinence, Gibbs referred to August and September of 2007, when most predicted Hillary Clinton would roll to victory in Iowa.

So not only are Obama and his people still reliving the campaign, they’re drawing the wrong lessons from it.

At this point in 2007, Obama was coming up in the polls, making Iowa a three-way race with Clinton and John Edwards. Now, the president’s numbers are sinking.

And if the trend line in the late summer of 2008 had held, Obama would have lost. It took a tsunami of bad economic news and the McCain campaign’s mishandling of it to put Obama back on top.

But there is no opponent here other than public opinion and no finish line other than the end of his term.

With only the steady breeze of favorable coverage of a typical Democratic president instead of the gale of positive press that once helped drive Obama to victory, it’s going to be a very long journey.

ACLU’s ‘Rock-Solid’ Anti-Prayer Case Crumbles

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

See what a little bit of prayer can do?

Santa Rosa County School District clerical assistant Michelle Winkler has had her day and court and has come out victorious. Winkler was accused of violating a court order that banned school officials from participating in religious activities on campus before, during, and after school hours when she asked her husband who is not employed by the school district to offer prayer at an event.

Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver seems surprised why the matter even made it to court. “And in fact in this case, Michelle Winkler was at an event after school at a Naval facility, off site, that was privately sponsored,” he explains.

businessman prayingStaver, whose firm represented Winkler, says the American Civil Liberties Union told the media going into the hearing that they had a rock-solid case. But after seven-and-a-half hours, the judge found that Winkler was not in violation of the court order — and that the court order was vague and did not specify as to what constituted a school-sponsored religious activity.

Another Democrat Claims Americans Concerned About Government Controlled Health Care “Undermining The Country”

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Unbelievable…

Latest dispatch from the “dissent is patriotic” front: if you oppose Pres. Obama in his health care initiative, you’re “undermining the country.”

None less than the great Howard Dean said so on this evening’s Rachel Maddow show.

Alison Stewart was filling in for the eponymous host.

HOWARD DEAN: When I was growing up in this country, Republicans and Democrats could actually sit down and have a sane conversation. You might not agree but you could get stuff done. This Republican party—this shrinking Republican party—is just determined to undermine President Obama. And unfortunately, you have to undermine the country in order to undermine the president. I think that’s too bad.

Will the MSM eventually get around to reporting the flaming hypocrisy of the dissent-is-patriotic crowd?

Special Prosecutor to Probe CIA Interrogations

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

This is the type of thing that happens in third world, “banana republic”, dictatorships, not the United States.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney said it well with this:

The documents released Monday clearly demonstrate that the individuals subjected to Enhanced Interrogation Techniques provided the bulk of intelligence we gained about al Qaeda. This intelligence saved lives and prevented terrorist attacks. These detainees also, according to the documents, played a role in nearly every capture of al Qaeda members and associates since 2002. The activities of the CIA in carrying out the policies of the Bush Administration were directly responsible for defeating all efforts by al Qaeda to launch further mass casualty attacks against the United States. The people involved deserve our gratitude. They do not deserve to be the targets of political investigations or prosecutions. President Obama’s decision to allow the Justice Department to investigate and possibly prosecute CIA personnel, and his decision to remove authority for interrogation from the CIA to the White House, serves as a reminder, if any were needed, of why so many Americans have doubts about this Administration’s ability to be responsible for our nation’s security.

Article IV of the Geneva Convention says:

“Persons belonging to one of the following categories, who have fallen into the power of the enemy:

1. Members of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict as well as members of militias or volunteer corps forming part of such armed forces.

2. Members of other militias and members of other volunteer corps, including those of organized resistance movements, belonging to a Party to the conflict and operating in or outside their own territory, even if this territory is occupied, provided that such militias or volunteer corps, including such organized resistance movements, fulfill the following conditions:

1. That of being commanded by a person responsible for his subordinates;

2. That of having a fixed distinctive sign recognizable at a distance;

3. That of carrying arms openly;

4. That of conducting their operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.

Can you see how terrorist do not fall under the protection of the Geneva Convention at all?

As for the CIA documents, Jeff Schreiber says it best:

Furthermore, the internal Republican memo suggests that many more documents still have yet to be released, and are known to contain more evidence that the interrogations did in fact work. One such document, the CIA CTC [CIA Counterterrorist Center] Effectiveness Memo, states that “the intelligence acquired from these interrogations has been a key reason why al-Qa’ida has failed to launch a spectacular attack in the West since 11 September 2001.”

This only serves to show that Barack Obama’s administration and the Democrats currently running the show on Capitol Hill wish to make a political game of our national security, and are willing to gamble American lives on an effort to portray the United States of America as a merciless bully, all the while concealing the true facts.

Friends and neighbors, we are at war. The brave American men and women in our intelligence community are on the front lines of that war. They protect American lives. The White House, however, is actively working against the interests of the United States of America, and should not be trusted with our safety and security. Every American should know this. Every person who frowns at the thought of enhanced interrogation must be told how it has worked.

“Are We on a Slippery Slope to Fascism?” By Jan Markell

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I have been troubled as I hear people saying that America is heading down a Socialist or Fascist path very similar to what happened in Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. But I must now acknowledge that these observers are much more right than wrong. One article that convinced me was Joseph Farah’s editorial on World Net Daily for August 11, “None Dare Call it Totalitarianism.” He wrote a follow-up on WND August 17 listing the comparisons to Nazi Germany. I do not always agree with Farah but I feel he has done his homework on the above.

On “Understanding the Times” radio this past weekend, I had Holocaust survivor Anita Dittman share her insights on this topic. Both she and her mother were sent to concentration camps and were scheduled to be gassed but were spared by one miracle after another. Both were Jewish believers in Jesus. They saw first-hand how Germany had morphed into a Fascist dictatorship.

So, is America on that slippery slope? Unless the church gets much more involved in restoring America, I would have to say yes. It seems secular humanism is the primary religion in America today as churches grow more and more silent and stray from sound teaching. And government is god.

How can we learn from Nazi Germany’s mistakes? Is there time to reverse what is happening in our great nation?

In Germany, “mercy killing” became the policy. Over 270,000 handicapped people were killed because in Germany, murder had become “mercy.” Pastors went to call on their elderly members in hospitals and they had disappeared.

Anita pointed to many other troubling issues, as the people were primed for a dictator with promises from Hitler, even if they were all false. Then the government took over private business, industry, and health care.

Hitler took control of the airwaves. He allowed no dissenters. Barack Obama has recently appointed Mark Lloyd, an extreme Leftist in ideology, as head of the FCC. He is not bashful in saying that he is going to fine conservative/Christian networks for presenting the kind of programming they do. The nearly $250 million fine money will be turned over to National Public Radio (NPR). Obviously no network could survive such a fine when radio today is suffering like many other industries. While you may think he will only target Rush and Sean, I assure you that “Understanding the Times” radio is in the crosshairs.

Pastors in Germany came under the gun — literally. If they spoke against Hitler or his policies, they were punished. We have “hate crime” laws in America now that have pastors and other good and righteous people targeted.

Anita Dittman recalls that many of the German people were blind. They were in a daze. And, they were biblically illiterate, even if they were long-time church members. Most churches had been watered down and thus marched willingly along, making no effort to stand for truth. Perhaps, had they been biblically grounded, they might not have caved.

In Germany, Fascism was basically Socialism. The Obama administration could very well be destroying the free-market system — as did Hitler, knowing that people will have no place to turn except to government — and this government wants to institute Socialism. Newsweek magazine said months ago in its cover story, “We Are All Socialists Now.” Not quite yet, but we’re heading there.

Secular humanism and Darwinian evolution were pushed in Germany. The government was god and the leader, Hitler, was a messiah-type figure. Anita remembers what oratory skills he had. He edged his way onto the political stage thanks to his communication abilities and the many promises he made. He had charisma and a charming smile that made the country trust him. Economic times were tough as people didn’t have jobs so Hitler used all the skills he had to win over the country. The Socialist Germany would be the ultimate nanny state and take care of everything. Germany would soon be a proud nation again.

Joseph Farah asks in the first article I referred to, “What do you call it when government-created joblessness is used to promote policies of government control? What do you call it when the government exceeds its authority under the Constitution and ignores any limits of power? What do you call it when the government strikes fear into the hearts of the sovereign citizens it is supposed to serve? What do you call it when government seeks to take over the private and personal health care decisions of people, establishing bureaucracies to make life-and-death decisions and banning unapproved transactions between doctors and patients?”

He continues, “Everything for which America has stood for the last 230 years is under attack — not by angry mobs, nor citizen lawlessness, and not from threats by external enemies. The threat is from those in charge of government. Americans are being seduced into serfdom and slavery. The specter of totalitarianism hovers like a dark cloud dressed up in euphemisms that would make Stalin, Hitler, and Mao Zedong proud.”

We can live in denial or we can call the church into action and individuals to prayer. If America remains a praying nation, some of the worst can be averted. So, will American Christians — and Christians everywhere — step up to the plate? Many believers are in a state of apathy and others are becoming more and more biblically illiterate.

And a nation like America is only as strong as her churches are strong.

In spite of some of the commentary coming from Anita Dittman, her book is a faith builder! All readers report that it is also a life-changer. It puts suffering into perspective. She believed that all things worked together for good during her ordeal and she lived to see that come true.

I Love the LORD, For He Heard My Voice

Monday, August 24th, 2009

I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.

Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.

The cords of death entangled me,
the anguish of the grave [a] came upon me;
I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.

Then I called on the name of the LORD :
“O LORD, save me!”

The LORD is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.

Healthcare for Illegals Part of Dems’ Plan

Monday, August 24th, 2009

An Alabama congressman warns that the government will have to ration care or reduce Medicare benefits under President Obama’s healthcare plan — and the Americans who will suffer the most from this will be patients with heart disease or cancer.

Congressman Spencer Bachus (R-Alabama) says present Medicare recipients will be hit twice by President Obama’s healthcare plan — (1) private health plans that are subsidizing Medicare will be reduced in number; and (2) more beneficiaries will be added to the entitlement program, including 10 million illegal aliens.

President Obama last week told liberal religious leaders that his government-run healthcare plan would not cover illegal aliens. However, he also said during a radio interview that he has no problem with illegal immigrants receiving emergency room care in certain situations under his plan.

Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Alabama)Congressman Bachus does not buy the president’s claim that illegal aliens are not covered under the plan.

“He better inform his allies in Congress, who voted 100 percent against an amendment to restrict this new plan to American citizens,” says the Alabama congressman. “The Democrats, in lock-step, voted against an amendment which would say that you’ve got to have proof of citizenship to participate.

Obama Opposed Healthcare Reform Before He Was For It

Monday, August 24th, 2009

“I want Americans to be clear that I have introduced major healthcare reform every year I’ve been in the Senate. Barack Obama did not introduce any that I’m aware of. He voted against Republican reforms that would have made it less expensive and more accessible for individuals to have their own insurance if they didn’t get it at work. He’s done everything he can to maintain the status quo so that he could call for government intervention — and we need to expose that to the American people.”

“HATE SPEECH ON CAMPUS” A Film by “Stand With Us” Reviewed by: FERN SIDMAN

Hate Speech on Campus

It is that time of the year once again. The new school term will begin in a matter of weeks. As the excitement and anticipation escalates for some, entering college or university for the first time can be a daunting and intimidating experience for the Jewish student. Always a minority, the secular Jewish student faces the foreboding prospect of living on a campus that has morphed into a raging hotbed of anti-Israel fanaticism.

Stand With Us, the pro-Israel advocacy organization that focuses its energies on countering disinformation and slander against Israel and Jews on college campuses, has produced a powerful and must-see documentary on the proliferation of rabid Jew hatred that has permeated today’s college campuses.

The introduction to “Hate Speech on Campus” unequivocally states that the objective of this film is not to thwart the rights of free speech on campuses or to initiate a campaign against academic freedom but rather to spotlight the rampant plague of Islamic demonization of Israel that has become a ubiquitous phenomenon.
Focusing on such campuses as the University of California at Irvine, Long Beach and Santa Cruz as well as San Diego State University and Concordia University in Canada, this film utilizes realtime footage of Muslim agitators whose political and religious ideology is clearly tethered to such radical movements as the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qeada. Brought to these campuses by the Muslim Students Association as well organizations such as the International Solidarity Movement, Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace and Women in Black, these treacherous propagandists use arguments predicated upon half truths, distortions and overt canards as they attempt to re-write history, as it pertains to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

It is clear that what is presented in this film is nothing short of classical anti-Semitism in its most banal form. Armed with the notion that the Jews are responsible for all of the world’s ills, Amir Abdel Malik Ali blatantly referring to Israel as an apartheid state, as he takes the podium at UC Irvine and advocates bloody terrorism by telling his audience that Palestinians who blow up civilian buses in Israel are indeed “freedom fighters” who are simply responding to Israeli aggression. Moreover, Malik Ali labels Zionism as “the American disease” that needs to be stamped out, adding that it is the “Zionist Jews” who control the media and have set an agenda for global domination. Calling on all Muslims to unite against what he perceives as a nefarious plot, he insists that Muslims must rule the world and utilize all means at their disposal to do so. He is joined in this cacophony of hate by such Islamic luminaries as Amir Abdel who has defined Zionism as a mixture of “white supremacy and the concept of the chosen people” and Imam Mohammed Al Asi who asserts that Israel is a “war like regime that has assumed a racist and expansionist posture”.

Not to be outdone, these Muslim speakers are joined by their American counterparts in excoriating Israel. Alison Weir, a former San Francisco journalist who now heads up an organization called, “If Americans Knew” speaks of Jews stealing Palestinian land and claims that prior to the creation of the State of Israel, “Zionists used an array of misleading strategies, including secret collaboration with the Nazis, to push immigration.” Former political science professor Norman Finkelstein who was denied tenure at DePaul University because of fraudulent scholarship is also seen in this film alleging that Israel engaged in “ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1948”. Finkelstein, a self hating Jew, is known for his role in denying the veracity of the Holocaust and portraying Holocaust survivors as crafty business people who are attempting to use their Holocaust experiences to build a money making industry.

According to Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, a lecturer in Hebrew at UC Santa Cruz, many of these speakers are sponsored by the Women’s Studies and Middle Eastern Studies departments which are rife with academics who possess a clear bias towards Israel and America. Because of the monopoly of power that they wield on today’s campuses, it is these very departments that refuse to allow speakers who wish to present a more objective position on the Israeli-Palestinian issue to address the student body. Apparently, the influence of Saudi Arabian dollars is visible as it has been revealed that their far reaching tentacles have a firm grasp on North American universities. Evidence has surfaced that is they who are the architects of the curriculum of numerous Middle Eastern Studies departments as well as their chief benefactors.

What is most frightening about the hate speech presented in this film, is the fact that these words facilitate an incitement to violence as was evidenced in the footage taken at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada when anti-Israel protestors publicly harassed and physically attacked Jewish students when then Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to speak on there. As the Muslim students literally blocked the escalator leading to the room where the speech was to be held, we witness clashes between police and demonstrators which ultimately led to the cancellation of the address.

Angered by the ever increasing bellicosity on campus, Jewish students as well as Hillel directors, rabbis and community leaders are now beginning to galvanize against such Jew hatred and are organizing their own activist agendas. Judea Pearl, the father of Wall Street Journal reporter, Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and beheaded by Taliban and Al Qeada operatives Pakistan in 2002 said that, “for too long Jews have allowed this kind of racism on campuses to flourish; all under the cloak of political debate”.

This film illustrates quite cogently that the use of such chilling epidemiological metaphors by the plethora of Jew haters on America’s college campuses is indeed reminiscent of Nazi incitement and thus represents a prologue to, and justification for a Mid-East genocide. If we choose to ignore this kind of hate as mere blather, we do so at our own peril. History has proven that the Holocaust did not begin in the gas chambers; but rather it began with words.

Updated: Judge Decides Fate of Honor Student, Cheerleader Who Fears “Honor Killing” After Converting to Christianity

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Fathima Bary

Update at Bottom.

The fears this beautiful young girl is feeling are very real. We have chronicled Muslim “honor killings” here. We have had the honor of featuring comments from Gail Gartrel, great-aunt to Sarah and Amina Said, two teen girls who were “honor killed” by their Muslim father. Take a moment to read her accounts of Sara and Amina as they to were abused by their father and brother (allegedly) before being killed by their father for bring “dishonor” to the family.

Sara and Amina Said

A young Christian runaway in foster care awaits her hearing tomorrow when Florida authorities will decide whether she will be forced to return to her Muslim parents – whom she says will kill her for converting to Christianity.

Fathima Rifqa Bary, 17, an honor student and cheerleader, was raised in a Muslim family in Columbus, Ohio. She became a Christian four years ago as a result of her interactions with children at school.

Atlas Shrugs’ Pamela Geller has followed Bary’s case closely, reporting that the girl’s friends accompanied her to the school counselor after they noticed bruises covering her arms and legs that allegedly resulted from beatings by her father and brother.

“The middle school, in a serious dereliction of duty, did not report these beatings to child welfare services,” Geller reported. “Beatings were random, violent, unprovoked. Take, for example, when Rifqa and her father Mohamed were driving in the car. He would force her to wear the hijab (head covering), which she hated. In her discomfort she would slouch down, embarrassed, and her father would haul off and sock her in the face so that she never forgot to sit up straight in her costume. The beatings were regular and so much a part of the landscape of Rifqa’s life, she became inured to them …”

Bary, a native of Sri Lanka, hitchhiked to a bus station and ran away from home on July 19 because she says her family will murder her in what is known as an honor killing. In Islamic tradition, an honor killing is the customary slaughter of a person who is believed to have brought dishonor upon his or her family.

The Christian teen turned to pastors Blake and Beverly Lorenz of Global Revolution Church in Orlando, Fla., whom she met through Facebook. She has been placed in foster care by the Florida Department of Children and Families, or DCF, awaiting a decision tomorrow on whether her case will be heard in Florida or in Ohio. Her jurisdiction hearing is now scheduled for 3:15 p.m. EST in Orlando’s juvenile court.

Fox News reported that legal experts have said she will almost certainly be forced to return to her parents’ home in Ohio where she will be required to live with her parents since Ohio does not have an emancipation statute. According to the report, Florida has such a statute, but it requires parental consent.

The teen’s attorney, John Stemberger, filed a petition for adjudication of dependency on Aug 18.

“I’m a Christian, and my parents are Muslim. They are extremely devout,” she said. “They threatened to kill me. … You guys wouldn’t understand. Islam is very different than you guys think. They have to kill me. My blood is now halal, which means that because I am now a Christian, I’m from a Muslim background, it’s an honor. If they love God more than me, they have to do this. I’m fighting for my life. …”

Asked what her father, Mohamed Bary, told her, she replied, “He said he would kill me. Or he’d have me sent back to Sri Lanka where they’d put me in the asylum.”

She said she left a note for her parents before she ran away: “I said, ‘I refuse to deny Jesus. He is my Lord and Savior. I pray you find his forgiveness and mercy, and I love you both dearly.’ I wrote that, but they never showed it to the police officers.”

Bary warned that if she is forced to return to her family in Ohio, she will die “within a week.”

Asked why she ran away, she said, “I was threatened by my dad. When my dad found out – I had a Facebook, that’s how he found out – and phone calls from the Muslim community started coming in with e-mails that confronted me. And I had a laptop and he took that laptop and waved it in the air, and he was about to beat me with it, and he said, ‘If you have this Jesus in your heart, you’re dead to me. You’re not my daughter.’ And I refused to speak but he said, ‘I will kill you. Tell me the truth.’ In these words, bad words, cuss words. So I knew that I had to get away.”

Atlas Shrugs reported that those members of the Muslim community, from Noor Islamic Cultural Center, warned Bary’s father that his daughter was an apostate, so the teenager sought to escape with her life.

Bary said she would sneak out to Christian prayer meetings and hide her Bible from her parents. After her father confronted her, he forced her to attend several classes, hoping she would return to Islam. However, several weeks later, her mother discovered a Christian book that belonged to her.

“I knew right then that it was over for me,” she said. “I had to leave.”

Fox News reported that the father discovered she had been baptized earlier this year.

The teenager said that in the 150 generations of her family, no one has ever known Jesus.

“I am the first one,” she said. “Imagine the honor in killing me.”

Bary said she wants to remain in Florida so she can be free to worship Jesus, go to church and read her Bible.

“You talk about religious freedom?” she asked. “No! I don’t have that. I want to be here. I want to worship Jesus freely. I don’t want to die.”

Bary’s father, a jeweler, called the church a “cult” and claimed it has brainwashed Fatima.

“This is a cult group who kidnapped my daughter and took her away,” Mohamed Bary told WESH 2 News.

He also denied the charges she is making and claims he does not intend to hurt her. He and his lawyer are in Florida, fighting to take his daughter back to Ohio.

Dr. Phyllis Chesler, author of “Are Honor Killings Simply Domestic Violence?” told Fox News Bary’s life will be in danger if she is forced to return to her parents.

“Anyone who converts from Islam is considered an apostate, and apostasy is a capital crime,” she said. “If she is returned to her family, if she is lucky, they will isolate her, beat her, threaten her, and if she is not ‘presuaded’ to return to Islam, they will kill her. They have no choice.”

Chesler continued, “She escaped from her family’s brutal tyranny and shamed her family further through public exposure. Muslim girls and women are killed for far less.”

Meanwhile, International Christian Concern is urging Florida officials to retain custody of Bary.

In a statement, ICC said it is concerned about Rifqa because the Columbus police officer who investigated the case told the press that Rifqa’s father “comes across to me as a loving, caring, worried father about the whereabouts and the health of his daughter.”

However, ICC reveals that a source who spoke with the same investigating officer said the officer indicated earlier that he has spoken with 20 different people who warned him that the girl’s life was in danger.

“We are extremely concerned about Rifqa,” ICC President Jeff King wrote. “… Based on our extensive international experience with fundamentalist Islam, we strongly believe that Rifqa’s life will be in danger if DCF decides to send her back to Ohio. We call upon authorities in Florida to retain custody of Rifqa.”

Fathima Rifqa Bary now has more than 2,000 Facebook fans expressing their support for the young girl. However, one Facebook group titled, “Rifqa Bary’s father 100% correct” was created by a man in Sri Lanka named Hashan Dilshan. The group has only 14 members – each with Islamic names.

One member named Mohammed Rizwan writes, “Rifqa, it’s not your fault. Rifqa, please be cool and think about what you are going to and what you will get from this religion. Rifqa, nothing to worry. Allah with you always if you not close to him, but Allah always close to you [sic].”

In yet another message likely intended for the girl’s father, Rizwan wrote, “Bary, you are correct. No one can do without Allah order! [sic] Go ahead … We are all together …”

Update 8/24/09:

Fox News is reporting that Rifqa Bary, a Christian convert whose parents are Muslim immigrants from Sri Lanka, will remain in foster care in Florida until another hearing is held Sept. 3.

A 17-year-old runaway who claims she fled her Muslim family’s home in Ohio because she feared becoming the victim of an “honor killing” will stay in Florida — temporarily — a judge ruled Friday.

Rifqa Bary, a Christian convert whose parents are Muslim immigrants from Sri Lanka, will remain in foster care in Florida until another hearing is held Sept. 3.

Rifqa fled to Florida after her parents, Mohamed and Aysha Bary, learned that she was baptized earlier this year without their knowledge. The parents reported her missing to Columbus, Ohio, Police on July 19. Weeks later, using cell phone and computer records, police tracked the girl to the Rev. Blake Lorenz, pastor of the Orlando-based Global Revolution Church.

Florida’s Gov. Charlie Crist weighed in on the mater Friday with the following statement: “I am grateful to Circuit Judge Daniel Dawson for his decision to grant Fathima Rifqa Bary the right to remain in Florida. … We will continue to fight to protect Rifqa’s safety and wellbeing as we move forward.”

In an emotional six-minute interview with WFTV in Florida, Rifqa, who met Lorenz through an online Facebook group, said she expects to be killed if she is forced to return to Ohio.

“If I had stayed in Ohio, I wouldn’t be alive,” she said. “In 150 generations in family, no one has known Jesus. I am the first — imagine the honor in killing me.”

“There is great honor in that, because if they love Allah more than me, they have to do it. It’s in the Koran,” said in the interview, which has been posted on YouTube.

Rifqa, who is seen wearing a large diamond cross during the interview, said she had to hide her Bible “for years,” and she repeatedly “snuck out” to attend Christian prayer meetings. She referred to previous victims of so-called honor killings, in which young Muslim women were murdered for bringing dishonor to their families.

“They love God more than me, they have to do this,” Bary told WFTV. “I’m fighting for my life. You guys don’t understand. … I want to worship Jesus freely, that’s what I want. I don’t want to die.”

Hurricane Bill May Ruin Obama’s Vacation

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Who says there isn’t a hand of God??

HAMILTON, Bermuda — A tropical storm warning was issued for the Massachusetts coast Saturday as waves from Hurricane Bill pounded Bermuda and people from Florida to New England braced for high surf and rip currents from the storm.

Bill continued to swirl over the open waters of the Atlantic as a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said it could regain intensity over the weekend as its center passes between Bermuda and the eastern U.S. seaboard.

The tropical storm warning included Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard off the Massachusetts coast, meaning tropical storm-force winds of 40 mph or more could hit in the next 24 hours. A tropical storm watch also remained in effect for Bermuda, though a hurricane watch was canceled.

‘Tea Party’ Organizers Plan Anti-‘Obamacare’ Rallies Across the Country

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Sorry for the late notice. Check the link in the article to see if there is one near you.

If Democratic lawmakers thought all the furor over President Obama’s health care plan expressed this month at town hall meetings was dying down, they might be in for a surprise Saturday.

That’s when citizens are planning anti-“Obamacare” rallies across the country Saturday in all 435 congressional districts.

And their message is clear: We will not stand for socialized, government-controlled health care.

The same groups who made the “tax tea parties” possible in April are behind this weekend’s movement. American Liberty Alliance, FreedomWorks and Americans for Prosperity are working with The Sam Adams Alliance, among others, to stage the rallies.

Click here for more information on the rallies.

They come as town hall clashes between Democratic lawmakers and protesters of Obama’s health care plan have captured national attention. Some Democrats have dismissed those protesters as “mobs” organized by special interests. But many protesters have said they attended the town halls out of genuine concern.

Now they can express their concerns at Saturday’s rallies.

“Obviously the idea behind this was to have a unified day for those concerned about government-controlled health care to talk outside their representatives’ offices,” said Paul Miller, spokesman for The Sam Adams Alliance, a Chicago-based political organization which is one of several groups promoting the event through new media.

Miller said this is a personal issue for many opponents, including himself, a 22-year cancer survivor. Miller, who was diagnosed with a rare cancer at the age of 14 and had his right arm amputated to save his life, says he would not have received the same specialized and speedy medical care if the government was in control.

“There isn’t this great conspiracy to say there shouldn’t be health care reform,” Miller told FOXNews.com. “People just want to make their own decisions and keep their insurance if they like. When government’s get involved, they never do anything right.”

Eric Odom, executive director for American Liberty Alliance, the lead group behind the tea parties and the new rallies told FOXNews.com that the rallies differ from the tea parties in that they are being organized from the bottom up.

“We didn’t want to try and do what we did on April 15 because the logistics was a nightmare,” he said, explaining that local organizers now have more control over the rallies and have only received basic information from the top.

“People at the local level have taken it and created their own animal with it,” he said. “This is more bottom heavy.”

Odom shrugged at the fact that most of the lawmakers won’t be present at their offices on a Saturday because he said the ultimate goal is to get more people politically engaged.

“This Saturday is symbolic,” he said, adding that his group will e-mail information to rally-goers on how to air their concerns to their representatives. “Most of these people have never done anything political in their lives.”

Phil Kerpen, director of policy for Americans for Prosperity, cautioned that it’s “impossible to predict” the turnout at these rallies “because it’s very decentralized.”

“It could be another big success,” he said, or the crowds could be scaled back. Kerpen said the packed town halls this month don’t provide much indication either.

“I think there’s no better place to make your voice heard and make an impact when you get face to face with your congressman,” he said. “The impetus is greater to show up there than here.”

Jacki Schechner, spokeswoman for Health Care for America Now (HCAN), a coalition of groups supporting Obama’s health care plan, said the rallies are a waste of time.

“There is no government-controlled health care on the table,” she said. “They’re protesting something that doesn’t exist.

“There’s a lot of people out there feeding lies and misinformation and trying to get people hyped up about something that doesn’t exist. They’re wasting their energy.”

Odom found irony in the objections raised by proponents of health care reform.

“It’s interesting that the world’s most professional organizers are upset that we’re organizing communities,” he said.

But Odom said he hasn’t gotten a lot of pushback.

“Surprisingly, I don’t think they take this very seriously,” he said. But he said what separates his organizers from many of Obama’s supporters, including Health Care for America Now (HCAN), is the passion.

“For them it’s business as usual. It’s what they’re paid to do,” he said.

Schechner said the differences between the two sides goes beyond money.

“We didn’t pop up over night,” she said, noting that the group’s campaign began last summer. “We don’t scream. We’re not angry.”

She rejected the notion that community organizers who are paid lack passion. “There are different kinds of passion,” she said.

Schechner added, “I don’t discount their passion. I don’t ever want to undermine their passion. But I really wish they would take a moment to really understand what this legislation is about, because a lot of people would be helped by it.”

But Kerpen said it’s clear that Obama’s plan would lead to a government takeover.

“Read the legislation that’s been proposed,” he said, adding that the House bill has been “designed as an achievable way to reach a single-payer system,” in which the government acts as the sole middle man with greater leverage to negotiate prices. “A lot of people are playing games, as we would expect them to.”

This Day the LORD Will Hand You Over to Me

Friday, August 21st, 2009

David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”

Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth.”

But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you.”

Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.
“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

Five Smooth Stones

Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the scabbard. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword.
When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath and to the gates of Ekron. Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron. When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp. David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem, and he put the Philistine’s weapons in his own tent.

“U.K. on ObamaCare: Been There, Done That” by Matt Barber

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address comes to mind. In the art of persuasion, it’s often most effective to paint in brief, colorful strokes.

A savvy reader with the handle “Jerseyvet” made an incisive observation after perusing my latest column concerning Obamacare:

“Start out with the premise that the demand for health care is infinite, but the supply is finite,” he wrote. “So health care has to be rationed. I trust the market, unfettered by governmental restrictions, more than the government. The Canadian and British systems of health care reinforce my belief.”

Jerseyvet – clearly one of those acerbate, “un-American” town hall “astroturfers” – has slung an arrow precisely through the heart of the matter.

Culture of Corruption by Michelle Malkin FREE

Even Obama famously gaffed upon this weighty truth with his ill-advised postal services analogy on the free market vs. government care: “UPS and FedEx are doing just fine,” he noted, “It’s the post office that’s always having problems.” (Isn’t that precious? Seriously – did Joe Biden write that line?)

The president could have saved us all the trouble and just admitted: “Blue Cross and Blue Shield are doing just fine (with room for true free-market reform). It’s government health care that’s always having problems.”

Fittingly, it was British statesman Edmund Burke who observed, “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.”

Regrettably, unless “we the people” defeat liberals’ radical experiment in British-style health care, we’re destined to repeat the very dark history under which they (the Brits) presently live and needlessly die.

President Obama is on record: “I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer universal health care plan,” he assured the AFL-CIO in 2003.

But Daniel Hannan – a popular British member of the European Parliament – recently warned us of what to expect should Obama’s vision come to fruition:

“If you want to see what a government-run health care system looks like, you need not look any further than the countries like Canada or Great Britain. They already have in place so-called universal health care, and the results, well, they’re not pretty.”

Virtually No U.S. Media Interest In ‘Imploding’ Canadian Press State-Run Health Care Story

Friday, August 21st, 2009

On Sunday evening, NewsBusters colleague Noel Sheppard highlighted a health care-related story from the Canadian Press (CP), which is that country’s rough equivalent to the USA’s Associated Press.

It appears that the CP is more open to reporting inconvenient news than is “our” AP, judging from a report earlier that day by the CP’s Jennifer Graham. In an interview with Graham, the incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association said that the supposedly idyllic wonderland known as Canadian medical care is in deep trouble. Lo and behold, Graham actually reported it:

The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country’s health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.

Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country – who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting – recognize that changes must be made.

“We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize,” Doing (sic) said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

Given the current debate in the U.S. over health care and private insurance, and the president’s seeming determination to force a state-controlled and ultimately state-run health care regime onto the remaining portion of the system that is still privately run, you would think that the story out of Canada might have attracted the interest of U.S. establishment media outlets. Noel thought that “It’s going to be absolutely delicious to see how this gets reported by Obama-loving media in the next 24 hours.”

Four days later, deliciously proving that “the Obama-loving media” is more than a mere slogan, there has virtually no original source establishment media coverage of what Ms. Doig said, or of anything else relayed in the Graham’s CP report.

The incoming CMA director’s last name made searching for results pretty easy. What I found in a search on “Doig” at the following media sites was the following:

  • The New York Times — nothing.
  • The Washington Time — zip.
  • The Los Angeles Times — nothing relevant.
  • The AP, whose search scope is seven days — nada.

A Google News search on “Anne Doig” for August 16-20 came back with a whopping 41 relevant items. Only about 20 of those were from sources within the U.S. The majority of those results were op-ed columns by Mona Charen, Larry Elder, and others, plus think-tank contributions from Heritage and the National Center for Policy Analysis. Original news reports appear to have been limited to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (a four-sentence snippet), the Washington Times (in an editorial), and NewsMax (in the final paragraphs of a related article about health care rationing in the Canadian province of British Columbia).

As Noel also pointed out on Sunday, both the outgoing and incoming CMA presidents are advocates of expanding private medical services up north. While our president and the congressional majority are attempting to move health care decisively in a statist direction, the establishment media has apparently decided that news consumers couldn’t possibly benefit from learning that there is significant sentiment in Canada’s medical community for going the opposite way.

I mean, really, how silly of a thought is that? (/sarcasm)

Obama: Republican Conspiracy Out to Kill Health Reform

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Our want-to-be emperor, Obama I, is starting to show the initial effects of paranoia as his socialization of our health care systems meets massive resistance. It’s much easier to brand dissenters as “fake”, “AstroTurf” (a play on the term “grassroots”, implying organized protest instead of sincere, concerned citizens expressing themselves) and even “un-American”, instead of acknowledging they don’t want what he and the other Democrats are pushing.
Now he could step back and ask for more funding for Medicare and Medicaid, which would solve the problem he claims we have; uninsured or under insured elderly or poor people. He doesn’t have to mess with the rest of us to accomplish this. The only thing he is trying to is socialize medicine, a goal he has had from the moment he appeared on the political scene.

President Obama took to the conservative airwaves Thursday to charge that Republican leaders are engaged in a vast right-wing conspiracy to kill health care reform in order to repeat the 1994 mid-term takeover of Congress, which followed the defeat of President Clinton’s reform plan.

“I think early on, a decision was made by the Republican leadership that said, ‘Look, let’s not give him a victory, maybe we can have a replay of 1993, ’94, when Clinton came in, he failed on health care and then we won in the mid-term elections and we got the majority. And I think there are some folks who are taking a page out that playbook,” the president said.

Appearing on the Michael Smerconish radio show, Mr. Obama said he would “love to have more Republicans engaged and involved in this process,” but he vowed to win the battle, with or without support from the minority party in Congress.

“I guarantee you, Joe, we are going to get health care reform done,” he said to one caller. “I know there are a lot of people out there who’ve been handwringing, and folks in the press are following every little twist and turn of the legislative process, but having a big bill like this is always messy.”

“ObamaCare? Ask the British and Canadians” by Larry Elder

Friday, August 21st, 2009

“We spend more on health care than most other countries.” “We need to bring costs down.”

To address these complaints, enter ObamaCare — which may or may not include a “public option” or a taxpayer-assisted “co-op” to keep insurance companies “honest.” But do countries with government-run health care succeed in retaining high quality while “bringing costs down”?

What about England?

Civitas, a nonpartisan British think tank, recently scolded the British National Health Service (NHS) for “putting the patient last.” Why? Civitas blames the government-run health care system’s monolithic nature, lack of competition, and the burdensome and wasteful regulation, redundancy, oversight and meddling by government — including some 69 public bodies besides the Department of Health, such as the Care Quality Commission and the Environment Agency. This means the NHS serves the bureaucrat, not the patient.

Culture of Corruption by Michelle Malkin FREE

What about our neighbor to the north, Canada?

After all, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama said that if “starting from scratch,” he’d emulate their “single-payer,” government-run system. Tell that to the incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association, the equivalent of the American Medical Association.

“We all agree that the system is imploding (emphasis added). We all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize,” said Dr. Anne Doig. “We know that there must be change,” she continued. “We’re all running flat-out. We’re all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands.” She said the Canadian model has some “very good things,” but “(Canadians) have to understand that the system that we have right now — if it keeps on going without change — is not sustainable.”

What does the current president of the Canadian Medical Association suggest? Competition.

Dr. Robert Ouellet conducted a fact-finding trip to Europe, meeting with those involved in health care from England, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. On his return, he said that “competition should be welcomed, not feared.”
