Prospects Rosy for Adult Stem-Cell Treatments

Monday, January 4th, 2010

There have been some very exciting advancements in adult stem-cell research, but there are few to none to report with embryonic stem-cells.

The past decade spelled success in research with adult stem cells.

The one area in stem-cell research where there have been no successful treatments is research on human embryos, which involves killing a tiny human being. Dr. David Prentice of the Family Research Council tells OneNewsNow there has been progress in a related field, that of induced pluripotent stem cells that can be developed by taking, for example, skin cells and adding a few genes and reprogramming the cell so it looks and acts like an embryonic stem cell.

But the real success, says Prentice, has been with adult stem cells.

Reports: Iraq De-Judaizing Ezekiel’s Tomb

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Do Muslims have to destroy everything they lay their hands on? It seems so…

( Early reports that Iraq plans to retain the Jewish nature of the Tomb of the Prophet Ezekiel are apparently false. Sources in Baghdad say that the government plans to turn it into a mosque and erase all Jewish markings.

Iraq announced earlier this year that it would revamp the ancient burial site, which is located in Al-Kifl, a small town south of Baghdad. The U.S.-backed government announcement implied that its Jewish nature would continue to be emphasized.

Since then, however, reports have surfaced that the government is actually planning to build a mosque there, including removing the ancient Hebew inscriptions that adorn the site. Some reports say that all or some of the lines of Hebrew script have already been erased.

Ezekiel (Yechezkel, in Hebrew), lived in the sixth century BCE, having accompanied the exiled Judeans to Babylon. His prophecies include the Vision of the Dry Bones, as well as the future return of Jewish People to the Land of Israel even if they are not deserving (Chapter 36: 22-25). Thousands of Jews often visited the site of his tomb annually before Iraqi Jewry came to an abrupt end in the middle of the 20th century, and Moslems and Christians continue to visit it even today.

Shelomo Alfassa, former Executive Director of the International Sephardic Leadership Council and editor of the International Sephardic Journal, reports that Islamic political parties have pressured the government to remove the Jewish inscriptions. He quotes the Iraqi news agency Ur News as reporting that the writing and ornamentations “are being (or have been) removed… under the pretext of restoring the site.”

Alfassa quotes sources to the effect that Iraq’s Antiquities and Heritage Authority “has been pressured by Islamists to historically cleanse all evidence of a Jewish connection to Iraq – a land where Jews had lived for over a thousand years before the advent of Islam.”

“You Can’t Pack the World in Bubble Wrap” by Todd Strandberg

Monday, January 4th, 2010

USAir passengers faced a slew of new travel woes as ramped-up airport security followed a thwarted Christmas Day terror attack. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab stands accused of trying to bring down a Northwest Airlines flight with 290 people on board by detonating 80 grams of PETN, or pentaerythritol, sewn into his underwear..

PETN is the same material convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid used when he tried to destroy a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes.

While the Nigerian had a sufficient amount of explosives to blow a hole in the plane, he apparently didn’t have the expertise needed to properly detonate it. All he succeeded in doing was setting his clothes and seat on fire.

Abdulmutallab promised there will be more terrorists to follow him. The former engineering student at University College in London has reportedly told FBI agents that he is one of many would-be bombers in Yemen ready to carry out attacks in the near future.

US Department of Homeland Security director Janet Napolitano quickly said there would be additional screening measures added to all US airports and all domestic and international flights “to ensure the continued safety of the traveling public.”

“Passengers flying from international locations to US destinations may notice additional security measures in place. These measures are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere,” said Napolitano. “Both domestic and international travelers should allot extra time for check-in,” she added.

President Obama quickly reacted to the near-catastrophe. He said it was the result of a “systemic failure” in security, and that this was the work of “isolated extremists.”

The administration quickly backed away from the “systemic failure” comment. Abdulmutallab was not on any no-fly list, and he had a valid U.S. visa that is good through 2010.

There is absolutely nothing isolated about Islamic extremists. President Obama cannot be talking about planet earth.

What is isolated about a global network of Islamist organizations and cells?
What is isolated about extremists who rule an entire nation — Iran ?
What is isolated about Hamas or Hezbollah?
What is isolated about imams in mosques all over the world over who call for violence?

Our government leaders need to quit with the political correctness and wake up to reality. This type of situation has become so common, I only needed to hear the name “Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab” to know what happened on the Christmas flight. It was during just the previous month that another follower of Islam, Nidal Malik Hasan, killed thirteen people and wounded thirty-eight at Fort Hood ‘s military processing center.

The sole reason we have an army of Transportation Security Administration agents at every major airport is Muslims. Each year, millions of people needlessly have to endure a gauntlet of security checks just to board a plane bound from one American city to another. There is no reason a 70-year-old grandmother needs to take off her shoes and submit to a body scan.

We don’t want to point out the obvious fact that we are doing this because of threats from the Islamic world. We are allowing the terrorists to make us prisoners in our own nation.

I can’t believe some of the new security measures being introduced. They are now making people sit there doing nothing during the last thirty minutes of every flight. You can’t even read a newspaper.

I was going to jokingly say that airline passengers would be required to fly nude, but that statement would not be too far from the truth. They have these new scanners that can see though people’s clothing, and this latest terror stunt will be the tipping point for putting them in all airports. I hope I’m not the only one who finds these scanners intrusive, gross, and perverted.

We’re not going to win this war of wills with the terrorists. You can’t pack the world in bubble wrap. These Islamic extremists have an endless number of places they can attack. I think the protective hand of God is the only reason we have not seen worst types of carnage.

I’m concerned that the day is coming when a suicide bomber will carry out a chemical, biological, nuclear bombing. Of course, one of these types of weapons could kill tens of thousands of people. What I fear the most is the police state that would quickly result from such an attack.
