Israel Stations Nuclear Missile Sub off Iran

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:04 pm by Steve

Interesting development.

Israel is planning to permanently station a submarine carrying nuclear cruise missiles in the Persian Gulf, the Sunday Times reported on Sunday.

Israeli submarines have visited the Gulf before, but the decision has now been taken to ensure a permanent presence of at least one of the vessels. One is already en route to the Gulf, according to the report.

The paper claims that the government has decided to station at least one of three submarines armed with nuclear missiles permanently within striking distance of Iran in thePersian Gulf.

According to the article the submarines are moving to the Persian Gulf in response to the growing missile threat to Israel from Syria, Iran and Hizbullah.

Israeli submarines are known to periocially visit the area but this is the first report that they may be permanently stationed there.

The diesel powered submarines are Dolphin class and were built in Germany to Israeli specifications.

BP Prepares Next Attempt to Stop Oil Leak

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:15 am by Steve

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is still not under control. The “Top Kill” attempt over the weekend failed. There were just two many holes in the riser and the majority of drilling mud escaped into the gulf instead of being forced down the well.
BP is now going to cut the raiser away and attempt to install the lower marine riser package (LMRP) cap containment system. This amounts to a “dome” that will sit over the BOP (blowout preventer) and capture a significant portion of the escaping oil and gas. The captured spill can then be pumped to the surface instead of flowing into the gulf.
Here is a link to the live video feed of the current ROV (remotely operated vehicles) operations.

Preparations are ongoing for deployment of the lower marine riser package (LMRP) cap containment system. Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are engaged in preliminary operations, including preparing for operations to cut through and separate the damaged riser from the LMRP at the top of the Deepwater Horizon’s failed blow-out preventer (BOP).

Deployment of the system will involve connecting the containment cap to a riser from the Discoverer Enterprise drillship and then placing it over the LMRP, with the intention of capturing most of the oil and gas flowing from the well and transporting it to the drillship on the surface.

All of these operations, including the cutting of the riser, are complex, involve risks and uncertainties, and have to be carried out by ROVs at 5,000 feet under water. Systems such as the LMRP containment cap have never before been deployed at these depths and conditions, and their efficiency and ability to contain the oil and gas cannot be assured. It is currently anticipated that attachment of the LMRP cap will be attempted later this week; however, operational delays could impact anticipated timeframes.
Preparations to use the Discoverer Enterprise to deploy the LMRP cap and the intended severing of the damaged riser mean that the riser insertion tube tool, previously deployed, will not be reinserted into the main leak at the end of the riser.

Work on the first relief well, which started on May 2, continues and it has currently reached a depth of 12,090 feet. Work on the second relief well, which started on May 16, had reached a depth of 8,576 feet before drilling was temporarily suspended on May 26. Drilling operations on the second relief well resumed on May 30. Both wells are still estimated to take around three months to complete from commencement of drilling.

COVINGTON, Louisiana — Robot submarines carried equipment and cut small pipes at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico on Monday to prepare to place a new containment valve over the blown-out well this week, while BP crews began working on yet another containment plan that could be added after the cut-and-cap effort.

The giant British oil company could begin cutting through the riser that’s spewing oil and gas into the Gulf as soon as Wednesday, after which they will attempt to place the cap-like containment device that would siphon the mixture to the surface.

In a new plan announced Monday, BP said that after it places the containment valve over the leaking riser, it plans to connect a pipe to a separate opening on the blowout preventer at the blown-out well to suck oil to the surface. The opening is the same one they used to inject mud during the failed top kill procedure over the weekend, and the new effort will re-use some of the machinery left on the ocean floor.

BP said in a news release that the new maneuver would supplement the cut-and-cap procedure and help keep more oil from leaking into the gulf. That mission could start in mid-June.

In another step announced Monday, BP said it was also working on building a sturdier, free-standing pipe to carry oil from its containment efforts toward the surface. This new free-standing pipe would end about 300 feet (90 meters) below the surface, and a flexible hose would carry the oil the rest of the way to a surface ship. It’s intended to give BP a way to disconnect its containment pipes in the event of a hurricane, and reconnect them after a storm.

BP said the construction of the free-standing riser, which crews could begin in late June or early July, would provide a “more permanent” way to capture the oil and gas as crews work to finish a pair of relief wells expected to plug the gusher for good. The first of the wells isn’t expected to be completed before August

Two New Situations Advance the End Times Clock Another Tick

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:05 am by Steve

Over the Memorial holiday weekend, two new situation occurred that promise to advance the end times clock another tick.

According to the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, the IAEA, has determined that Iran has enough enriched uranium to build two nuclear weapons. Despite years of warnings, and numerous cover-ups by the previous head of the IAEA, also a Muslim, Iran has been allowed to develop these weapons. Despite Iran’s overt call for the complete destruction of Israel, the world sat on it’s hands and did nothing. Israel’s blood will be on their hands. May God’s judgment against them be swift and harsh.

The other event deals with the Palestinian activists killed in the operation against Gaza flotilla.
Apparently, one of the main players in the flotilla is Turkey.
Many of us have wondered how Turkey, a key player in end times events was gong to arrive at a point where they could fulfill that role. For years they have been friendly and sympathetic to Israel. Until very recently, they offered significant support to Israel.
Last year, and into this year, that all changed.
Turkey now is on the verge of breaking off all diplomatic ties with Israel, with the flotilla incident just being the latest in a long line of issues between the two countries.
It is my opinion that Turkey is now poised to fulfill their end times role.

Hang on folks, it may get really bumpy soon.

“Arabs Try to Lynch Israeli Paint-Gun Commandos – Myths and Facts about the Israeli Naval Operation” by Yekutiel Guzofsky

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:52 am by Steve

If it wasn’t so sad it would make great material for a comedy. The Israeli government sends its most elite military unit – its navy seals – to overtake the Turkish terrorist supply ships as they penetrated into Israeli territorial waters with the stated intent of breaking the Israeli naval blockade around the terrorist Hamas entity that controls Gaza. That Israel sees it as a priority to continue blocking the free flow of weapons into Gaza is not the problem. However, the feeble tactics used by the Israeli government to enforce the blockade needs to be studied and never again duplicated.Did Israel use disproportionate and excessive force? The absolute opposite is true – Israel armed its fighters with toy paint-guns, and gave specific orders to all troops not to open fire with their pistols unless their lives were in danger. In fact, the poor soldiers refrained from shooting back until some of their comrades were already being lynched, shot at, firebombed and stabbed.

The Israelis had spent tens of millions of shekels to set up hotel-suite jail cells, cake and coffee, and promised that they would not use unnecessary force to reroute the ships to the Ashdod port, where they would run a security check of all of the items and then transport the cargo, free of charge into Gaza. Israel also announced in advance that they would send all of the Turks and Europeans back to their countries of origin at Israel’s expense. The European and Turkish Hamas sympathizers had two goals – to break through the blockade thereby easing present and future restrictions to transport and smuggle weapons freely into Gaza, and to embarrass Israel – knowing just how sensitive and obsessive Israel is about international public opinion. Israel also had two primary goals: To minimize damage to its image and to prevent direct passage into Gaza. In Israel’s suicidal and futile quest to be loved by the Gentiles and to look good in their eyes, Israel once again risked the lives of is finest soldiers and civilians, lowering them onto the boats, one by one, armed primarily with toy paint-guns. This was after having undergone weeks of mental preparation to be “sensitive” to the terrorists who were known to be on board along with their radical supporters who came along for the voyage.

Israel’s futile attempt to look pretty was doomed to failure from the onset, as the Voice of Judea predicted and published Friday, three days before the dangerous debacle at sea that resulted in severe injuries to several Israeli soldiers and in the deaths of some 15 Hamas sympathizers on the boat. In the prophetic words of that Judean Voice issue: “Israel lacks the means to offset anti-Israel bias on campuses and in the international press. Whatever Israel does, she will be portrayed as the culprit. It is nothing more than extreme stupidity and a mere exercise in futility to enter that uneven playing-field, where the deck (no pun intended) is stacked against Israel. Whatever Israel does she will be treated like an Apartheid state. Thus Israel should focus on one thing and one thing only – the prevention of the ships entering into Israeli waters, by any and all means necessary. Israel needs to make it clear to any and all that if they penetrate Israeli waters, they will be immediately sunk.” We continued in our Friday commentary – “Nothing will be gained by placing our soldiers unnecessarily at risk by having them physically board the ships, and face off with terrorists and whatever unknown weapons and surprises await them. We have our limits and our borders and whoever penetrates them do so at their own risk. There is not a sane country in the free world that would have operated any differently than the way we have suggested when faced with a terrorist enemy who seeks to destroy them and to smuggle in weapons to annihilate them.”

We even predicted the exact outcome: “Unfortunately Bibi lacks the backbone and the faith to do anything else but to play right into the hands of the terrorists, as he already promised to transport all of he ship’s loads to Gaza, while on the other hand, he will not be able to avoid the bloody broadcasts of the Israeli commandos overtaking the boats – giving the Hamas the very victory that he is so frightened to deliver to them. This is the true danger of a secular head of state who lacks faith in G-d and the justice of his cause. For one who is scared of the prophetic scenario for Israel to “dwell alone” in separation and in isolation, and one who places his faith in Washington and who sees the Biblical isolation blessing as a dreadful curse, will inevitably lose out on all fronts and in all worlds. And we urge all to watch closely the unfolding of this saga at sea, because it is apparent that we will see yet another rerun of frightened myopic Jewish leaders, who with all of their insane preparations to greet the enemy boats with kid’s gloves – it will all be to no avail. The same tons of supplies will be brought to Gaza and Israel will lose the media battle regardless.”

What should be done? Firstly, we must not leave any doubt in anyone’s mind that we will not risk one soldier unnecessarily, and we couldn’t care less about international opinion. We must do what needs to be done to protect the integrity of our borders and the lives of our people. And if you as much as think about entering Israel by sea, land or air, we will blow you to kingdom’s come. Bad P.R.? Better to stay alive with bad P.R. that makes the world boil over with anger at us, than to die and “benefit” from the sympathy at Yad Vashem as they come to cry their crocodile tears and place wreaths of flowers, wreathed with smiles and pity for the helpless Jewish victims. There is no way to buy the love of the Gentiles with misplaced mercy of fools. However, we can achieve respect and fear by taking the necessary steps to secure our borders thereby fulfilling the verse, “And the fear of the Jews has befallen the nations”. Indeed the time has come to recover from our Jewish ghetto complex of seeking favor in the eyes of the Gentile, and to replace that with faith in G-d and Jewish power. That is the Jewish way, and the only way to restore Israel’s deterrent factor lost at sea and lost when Israel fled Lebanon, surrendered Gaza, froze “settlement” growth, permitted Iran and Syria to pump weapons into Lebanon with impunity and forfeited her sovereignty over the Temple Mount. The situation will continue to deteriorate as long as Israel chooses to fight her battles with toy guns in the futile hope to gain favor in the eyes of her enemies.

The Saga at Sea and the Eaters of Stinking Fish

This latest saga at sea can only remind us of that famous Jewish story where a king sends his servant out to buy him fish. The servant returns with fish that stinks. The enraged king offers his servant to choose one of three punishments: to eat the fish, to pay for the fish, or to take 20 lashes. The servant, not wanting to fork over money, tries to eat the fish, but it is so disgusting, that he stops in the middle, and chooses to suffer the lashes. But the whipping is so painful, that he stops in the middle and finally offers to pay for the fish. And so, the servant ends up paying for the fish anyway, but only after suffering all the other punishments as well. The parable is clear: Israel is so worried about it’s world image, that it bends over backward and risks the lives of its soldiers to show they are not aggressors. But in the end, they get condemned anyway, like eaters of stinking fish.

Two Christian Aid Groups Suspended in Afghanistan

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:50 am by Steve

The open, caring, tolerant nature of Muslims is really hard to find, since in everyplace, except the delusions of the liberal mind, it DOESN’T EXIST!!
Here is yet another example.

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan authorities suspended two Christian foreign aid groups Monday on suspicion of proselytizing in the strictly Islamic nation and said a follow-up investigation would include whether other groups were trying to convert Muslims.

U.S.-based Church World Service and Norwegian Church Aid will not be allowed to operate while the allegations, aired Sunday on Afghan television, are investigated, said Mohammad Hashim Mayar, the deputy director of the Afghan government office that oversees nongovernment organizations, known as NGOs.

Mayar said officials did not have any evidence of proselytizing beyond the television report.

An investigation commission including officers from the National Security and Interior Ministries had been appointed, he said.

“They are investigating whether the groups were proselytizing or not,” Mayar said. “They will report back and also assess what is the impact of closing these NGOs. The investigation will include whether other groups or individuals are involved.”

The two groups could not immediately be reached for comment.

Proselytizing is illegal in Afghanistan, as it is in many Muslim countries. It is a hot-button issue for many Afghans sensitive to the influence of the scores of foreign aid groups operating in the country to help it recover from decades of war.

Church World Service is a cooperative ministry of more than 30 Protestant and Orthodox denominations in the United States and works in more than 80 countries. It is headquartered in Elkhart, Indiana.

Norwegian Church Aid operates in about 125 countries, providing long-term development and emergency response aid, according to its website.

Palestinian Activists Killed in Operation Against Gaza Flotilla, U.N. Condemns Israel

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:46 am by Steve

Well, no surprise about the U.N. condemnation of Israel. No surprise about terrorist being a part of the flotilla. It may have been surprise a few years ago about one country that was involved in the flotilla, but not now.
The stage is being set for the end.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says at least four pro-Palestinian activists have been killed after attacking naval commandos who were halting an aid flotilla heading toward the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The army says the soldiers were attacked with knives and clubs as they boarded the six vessels Monday. It says soldiers opened fire after a protester grabbed a weapon from one of the commandos.

The army says dozens of people were wounded, both soldiers and activists, and it is evacuating the casualties from the Mediterranean by helicopter.

OFF THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST (AP) — Israeli commandos on Monday stormed six ships carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists on an aid mission to the blockaded Gaza Strip, setting off fierce battles in which at least two people were killed and dozens were wounded, according to the Turkish government.

There were conflicting accounts of what happened.

The al-Jazeera satellite channel reported by telephone from the Turkish ship leading the flotilla that Israeli navy forces fired at the ship and boarded it, wounding the captain. Turkey’s NTV channel also reported an Israeli takeover in which gunfire was used.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry, citing “preliminary information,” said at least two people were killed and more than 30 wounded. NTV, which had a reporter on board one of the ships, also said two were killed.

But Israeli security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity under military guidelines, said activists attacked the Israeli forces with knives and iron rods as they boarded the boats.

They said an unspecified number of activists and 15 Israeli troops were among the wounded.

“The people on the boats were very, very violent toward the soldiers,” said Israeli military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich.

NTV showed activists beating one Israeli soldier with sticks as he rappelled from a helicopter onto one of the boats.

A Turkish website showed video of pandemonium on board one of the ships, with activists in orange life jackets running around as some tried to help an activist apparently unconscious on the deck. The site also showed video of an Israeli helicopter flying overhead and Israeli warships nearby.

Meanwhile, back at the World Headquarters of Condemn Israel, I mean, back at the U.N.:

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. Security Council called early Tuesday for an “impartial” investigation of Israel’s deadly commando raid on ships taking humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and condemned the “acts” that resulted in the loss of at least nine lives.

After an emergency meeting and marathon negotiations that lasted nearly 12 hours, the 15 council members finally agreed on a presidential statement. It was weaker than what was initially demanded by the Palestinians, Arabs and Turkey because of objections by the United States, Israel’s closest ally.

The Islamic nations had called for condemnation of Monday’s attack by Israeli forces on the flotilla “in the strongest terms” and “an independent international investigation.”

But the presidential statement that was finally agreed to and read at a formal council meeting instead called for “a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards.” And it only condemned “those acts” that resulted in deaths, without naming Israel.

The long and difficult negotiations were conducted primarily by the United States with Turkey and Lebanon, which are both non-permanent council members.

Turkey, which had been a close Muslim ally of Israel, used some of the harshest language against the Jewish state for launching the raid against the flotilla, which included a Turkish ferry on which nine pro-Palestinian activists were killed. Hundreds of activists — many of them Turkish — were taken from the ships to Israel.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, whose country drafted the initial presidential statement, called the Israeli raid “banditry and piracy” on the high seas and “murder conducted by a state.”

Palestinian U.N. observer Riyad Mansour called it a “war crime,” and told an open Security Council meeting that “those fleets, one after the other, will be coming until the unethical blockade is put to an end and the suffering stops for our people.”

Organizers of the six-ship Gaza aid flotilla stopped by the Israelis said they would be sending two more ships to challenge the blockade within the next few days.

A palpable tension filled the air on Greenwich Street in lower Manhattan on Tuesday evening May 25th, as an emotionally charged meeting was held by Manhattan’s Community Board 1 over the proposed construction of a 13-story mosque and cultural center just blocks away from Ground Zero, the site of the 9/11 twin towers terror attacks.

After four hours of rancorous public debate, hostilities reached a zenith when members of the board voted 29-1 with 10 abstentions in support of the plan. Several board members proposed a postponement of the vote until the next meeting in order to obtain more detailed information about funding of the project and the organizations sponsoring it, but the motion failed.

The Cordoba Initiative, headed by Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, is the chief sponsor of the project that is to be called The Cordoba House, a name that refers to the city in Spain which, in the Middle Ages, was a center of Islamic culture and learning. Cordoba was also the seat of an Islamic caliphate in which Jews and Christians suffered under second-class dhimmi status. It was the site of a large-scale pogrom, perpetrated by Muslims, in the year 1011.

The mosque will be built at 45 Park Place, is the site of a four story edifice built in 1857 and was a Burlington Coat retail store until 9/11, when part of the plane’s landing gear crashed through the roof. The building which currently houses a mosque will be razed to make room for the new structure. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission could conceivably thwart the intended project if they determine that the building has historic status, thus rendering it a landmark. Elisabeth de Bourbon, a spokeswoman for the Landmarks Commission said a hearing is scheduled to take place on that very subject.

Failing to abide by Roberts Rules of Order, project opponents jeered at the speakers and yelled comments such as, “You’re building over a cemetery!” while holding signs that read, “Show respect for the 3000” among other things. Among the groups standing in opposition to the proposed mosque are the Families of the 9/11 Victims, the Tea Party activists of Staten Island and Brooklyn, the New York City Firefighters, Stop the Islamization of America (SIOA), Jihad Watch and the Human Rights Coalition Against Radical Islam (HRCARI).

Pamela Geller, executive director of “Stop Islamization of America’ (SIOA), an organization that is spearheading the June 6th rally to protest the proposed mosque blasted the Cordoba Initiative and its leader, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, saying the project is “an insult to the people who were murdered there on 9/11 to build a mosque that will teach the same holy book, the same belief-system, that motivated the 9/11 terrorists.” She added that, “In Islam there is a history of placing mosques over the cherished sites of conquered people: the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, where the Dome of the Rock now stands, and the conversion of the Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople into a mosque are two of the most famous examples, but there are thousands of others. In the Islamic world a mosque at Ground Zero would be no less unmistakably a sign of Islamic triumphalism and supremacism.”

Before the vote, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said that he understood the sensitivities of the families of the 9/11 victims. “I don’t think anybody wants to do anything to disrespect those families. They made the ultimate sacrifice” he said. “At the same time, we have to balance diversity and look for opportunities to bring different groups together.” Stringer released a statement on behalf of the community board saying that support of the construction of the mosque “sent a clear message that our city is one that promotes diversity and tolerance.”

Stringer has been the target of disparaging remarks by Tea Party activist Mark Williams who has called the proposed center a monument to the terror attacks. Stringer has defended his position in support of the plans to build the mosque and has denounced what he perceives to be offensive speech directed at him or at Muslims.

Council member Margaret Chin said early in the meeting that those who assume a posture of strong resistance to the plans for the proposed mosque are “haters and bigots.” The reference was directed at members of the Human Rights Coalition Against Radical Islam (HRCARI) and others who held aloft signs condemning the decision of the board to support this endeavor. According to a 1991 article in “The City Journal” author Richard Brookhiser revealed Ms. Chin’s political agenda. He states, “For Ms. Chin had risen to prominence by way of the Communist Workers Party, a Maoist sect that decided several years ago to begin infiltrating mainstream politics.”

Satya Dosapati, a leader of the Hindu Human Rights Watch and an active member of the Human Rights Coalition Against Radical Islam said that “my observation has been that people are waking up to the very real threat that Islamic radicalism represents.” Mr. Dosapati is working on mobilizing the large Hindu population in central New Jersey and is arranging buses to the rally on June 6th. “We need exceptionally large numbers of people to attend this rally if we want our voices to be heard. We are assembling at 12 noon on June 6th at Zucotti Park on the corner of Church and Liberty Streets and we beseech all those who are concerned about the future of democracy, liberty and freedom to come out.”

Imam Rauf insists that the $150 million project is meant to heal the wounds of 9/11. “We’ve approached the community because we want this to be an example of how we are cooperating with the members of the community, not only to provide services but also to build a discourse on how Muslims and non-Muslims can cooperate together to push back against the voice of extremism”, he said.

Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy says there are more productive ways to fight Islamic extremism and has questions about the financing. According to reports, the building that occupies the site was purchased last year for $4.85 million in cash by Soho Properties, a real estate company run by Muslims. Imam Rauf, who is also the founder of the American Society for Muslim Advancement was an investor in that transaction.

Dr. Jasser said that with such a financial commitment, there needs to be full disclosure about where the money is coming from. “There should be transparency about who those investors are; whether that money is coming from a domestic source or not, and if it’s coming from foreign interests we need to know, because I think that’s a liability, and it shows that there is another agenda rather than domestic security and tranquility” he said.

Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch, a program of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, and the author of ten books on the nature of Islam expressed doubts about the purportedly benign views of Imam Rauf. “After the 9/11 attacks, Imam Rauf was quoted on the CBS 60 Minutes program of September 30, 2001 as saying, “US policies were an accessory to the 9/11 crime. In the most direct sense Osama Bin Laden was made in the USA”. It is clear from the language that Imam Rauf uses now as opposed to back in 2001 that he is a prototypical dissembler as he boldly insinuated that American foreign policy was to blame for the heinous atrocities that took the lives of close to 3,000 people on 9/11″ he said.

“Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is an open proponent of Sharia, which institutionalizes discrimination against Jews, Christians, women, and others, and denies freedom of speech and freedom of conscience” said Pamela Geller of SIOA. Her sober warning was crystal clear: “If we do not confront this threat now, then in the future we will see increasing assertiveness from Islamic supremacists in this country; demanding that we accept elements of Islamic law, and increasing conflict as free Americans see their rights being abridged and Muslims set up as a privileged class here.”

Another Graduation Prayer, Another Investigation

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:34 am by Steve

This happens every year. Once again, it is not against the law for a student to express their religious views, even in a public forum such as a graduation ceremony.

HAVRE, MT – The ACLU of Montana is asking the state Board of Regents to investigate whether the invocation and benediction given during the Montana State University-Northern graduation ceremony unconstitutionally promoted Christianity.

Betsy Griffing, the group’s legal director, said it received complaints from faculty members that Pastor Tim Zerger of the Community Alliance Church repeatedly referred to Jesus as a personal savior during the graduation on May 8.

Zerger said Wednesday that he had not seen the ACLU complaint, but acknowledged that as a Christian minister, his invocation and benediction were Christian prayers.

U.N. Nuclear Watchdog, IAEA, Says Iran Has Fuel for Two Nukes

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:27 am by Steve

Well, we’ve gone on about this for years, almost five, since I started talking about this almost from the conception of this blog. Now it’s too late. Israel will have to act. With Obama’s hatred of them, it is most certain they will have to act alone.

VIENNA (AP) — Iran has amassed more than two tons of enriched uranium, the U.N. atomic agency said Monday in a report that heightened Western concerns about the country developing the ability to produce a nuclear weapon.

Two tons of uranium would be enough for two nuclear warheads, although Iran says it does not want weapons and is only pursuing civilian nuclear energy.

The U.S. and the four other permanent U.N. Security Council members — Russia, China, Britain and France — have tentatively backed a draft fourth set of U.N. sanctions against Iran over its refusal to stop enriching uranium.

Separately, the International Atomic Energy Agency — the U.N. nuclear watchdog — said Syria continues to stonewall agency reports to follow up on U.S. assertions that a facility destroyed three years ago by Israeli warplanes was a secretly built reactor meant to produce plutonium.

“Syria has not cooperated with the agency since June 2008” on most aspects of its investigation, according to the IAEA’s Syria report. But it noted that Syria has admitted to small-scale nuclear experiments that it had previously not owned up to.

Syria denies allegations it was being helped by Iran and North Korea in developing a covert program.

But diplomats familiar with the Syria probe told The Associated Press of a visit to Syria in January by a high-ranking Iranian nuclear delegation led by Mahdi Kaniki, a deputy to Ali Akhbar Salehi, an Iranian deputy president and head of his country’s nuclear program. The two diplomats asked for anonymity because their information was confidential.
