“Honor Killing” Dad Secretly Taped Girls

Friday, August 6th, 2010

More information is becoming available concerning the “honor killing” of Sarah and Amina Said, who were killed by the father. Tonight (August 6, 2010) at 9 PM CDT, Fox News will be running a special program called “Honor Killing in America”, which will feature the story of these two girls.
Gail Gartrell, the great-aunt to the girls, has posted here before. Follow the links below to see her comments concerning the “honor killing” of her nieces as this saga continues.

Amina and Sarah Said

On New Year’s Day 2008, two Texas teenagers Amina and Sarah Said were shot dead, their bloodied bodies left in a taxi cab. The alleged shooter: their father Yaser Said.

In fact, Sarah appears to identify her Dad as the murderer in a 9-11 call – her dying words.

For more than two years the Fox News Reporting team has been following this story and the search for Yaser Said, who vanished the night of the murders.

We learned this dark tale began long before the girls were born. Their mother Patricia married the Egyptian-born Said when she was only 15-years-old. She says her husband violently abused her during their 20-year marriage.

Over the course of our investigation, Fox News’ Gregg Jarrett and I made multiple trips to Texas, taping hours of interviews with investigators, relatives and family friends.

We also obtained never-before-broadcast video of the girls that was secretly shot by their father. In light of what happened to Amina and Sarah, it’s extremely disturbing footage.

If Yaser Said killed his daughters, what was his motive? His American wife Tissy claims he did so because their girls were dating boys that weren’t Muslim.

While friends and family call the murders honor killings, it’s a label the FBI and local police have been hesitant to use.

In fact, 8 months after the deaths of Amina and Sarah the FBI added the words “honor killing” to their wanted poster but days later, removed them.

In the hour, we also speak with former FBI counter-terrorism chief Steve Pomeranz and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Both provided a broader perspective to this story.

Hirsi Ali – born a Muslim in Somalia, she was subjected to female circumcision as a child and fled to Europe in 1992 after refusing an arranged marriage. In 2003 she won a seat in the Dutch Parliament. The following year she wrote and co-produced a film about Islam’s subjugation of women with director Theo van Gogh. Van Gogh was murdered by a radical Muslim, who pinned a note to Van Gogh’s chest vowing that Hirsi Ali was next. Hirsi Ali fled again this time to the United States, where she lives under round-the-clock security but continues to be a forceful critic of Islam. She’s been following the Said case from the beginning.

Fox News Reporting: Honor Killing in America airs Friday August 6th at 10pm ET.

Judge: Runaway Christian Girl Not Required to Reunite With Muslim Parents

    Friday, August 6th, 2010

Well, so good for Rifqa Bary, the former Muslim teen who ran away from home, in fear of her life, after she converted from Islam to Christianity. She will not have to reunite with her parents before she turns 18. This will also help her immigration status, which is in question.
Also, in regards to Xavier’s comment, on one of our earlier post about her, where he said “[t]his girl has cancer, if she dies, then her death will be on the hands of these Christian fundie nuts”. As I told Xavier, “[p]lease keep in mind that the comment about the “faith healers” was made by her parents. They have made several inaccurate comments throughout this whole situation, most of which dealt with the nature of her Christianity”. My statement is true as her lawyer put that myth to bed. It turns out that she decided, in consultation with her doctor, to suspend chemo treatments, since her cancer scans are currently clean.
As a cancer survivor, I can comment on this.
As with me, she was given two cancer treatment options. The first is to have surgery to remove the cancer, followed up by a battery of chemo (in her case) or radiation (in my case). The second option is surgery followed by what is characterized as “observation”, or watching, for the development of other cancers, via blood tests and non-invasive scans (CAT, X-Ray, PET or MRI).
In my case, I opted for radiation, but unlike Rifqa, my battery was only 3 weeks. Her chemo was supposed to be 45 weeks.
For those of us who have been through it, we understand what almost year of this treatment means. For those of you haven’t, I pray that you never have to, but please know that you cannot understand. I do understand why a young lady, if given the choice, would choose to do “observation” instead of 45 weeks of aggressive chemotherapy.
None the less, the parents once again mis-characterized her Christian faith.
Please continue to pray for this brave, young lady.

    Fathima Bary

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A juvenile court judge in Columbus, Ohio, has granted a runaway Christian convert’s request to declare reunion with her Muslim parents impossible, paving the way for the girl to fight deportation.

Magistrate Mary Goodrich said Thursday that reconciliation between Rifqa Bary and her parents isn’t possible before she turns 18 on Tuesday. Goodrich also said it’s not in the girl’s best interest to return her to her native Sri Lanka.

Bary is an illegal immigrant. The ruling allows her attorneys to file for a special immigration status to allow her to stay in the U.S. while she continues medical treatment following recent surgery for uterine cancer.

Bary fled to Florida last year saying she feared harm for her conversion. Her parents deny she would have been harmed. The immigration status of the parents, who live in the Columbus area, is unclear.

Bary underwent successful cancer surgery in May and then was scheduled for 45 weeks of chemotherapy , which would give her an “80 to 90 percent chance” she’d be fine, Omar Tarazi, an attorney for Bary’s parents, told the judge.

Instead, Bary stopped the chemotherapy after two or three rounds, deciding she’d been healed, Tarazi said. In a court filing last week, the girl’s parents claimed she stopped after visiting a faith healer.

“The parents are feeling helpless,” Tarazi said. “They feel like this is such a critical issue that it be in writing.”

Goodrich said she understood why Bary’s parents, Mohamed and Aysha Bary of suburban Columbus, filed the request. “I’ve never gotten the impression they didn’t care very much for their daughter,” she said.

A letter from Bary’s doctor recommending the 45 weeks of chemotherapy indicates she is cancer free for now according to available imaging technology, Bary’s attorney, Kort Gatterdam, told the judge.

The letter also says she suffers from a rare form of cancer for which there is no standard treatment.

Rifqa Bary stopped the treatment after becoming sick and in consultation with her doctor, Gatterdam said. He disputed the faith healer allegation, saying Bary had attended a prayer conference after which she continued with surgeries and other treatment.

“Rifqa’s not saying she’ll never do the treatment again, that she’ll never do chemo,” Gatterdam said. “She’ll continue working with her doctor.”

    Amina and Sarah Said

Gail Gartrell and I have been informed of a show on Fox News, called “Honor Killings in America”, that will feature the honor killings of Sara and Amina Said.

According to the producer from Fox News, it will show at 9 PM CDT, tonight (Friday, August 6, 2010) on the Fox News Channel.

I urge all of you to take a moment and watch it, or at least record it.

    Wednesday, January 2, 2008

Yaser Abdel Said, 50, of the Dallas suburb of Lewisville, is accused of shooting Sarah Yaser Said, 17, and Amina Yaser Said, 18, in his taxi Tuesday night [January 1, 2008] and abandoning it in a parking lot, leaving them to die.

Police have not released a motive for the shootings, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported in its online edition Wednesday.

One of the teens called 911 on a cell phone about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and said she was shot, but she couldn’t tell police where she was, Irving police said.

Officers were dispatched to the area, which turned out to be about half a mile from the taxi, but didn’t find anyone, The Dallas Morning News reported in its online edition Wednesday. Police found the taxi with the bodies inside an hour later after a witness called and reported a suspicious vehicle in a hotel parking lot, said David Tull, an Irving police spokesman.

Police described Yaser Abdel Said as about 6-foot-2, weighing about 180 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black turtleneck shirt or sweater, a brown coat and tan pants. He is believed to be armed with a handgun, police said.

    From Fox News:

    Friday, August 6 at 10 p.m. ET
    Hosted by Bill Hemmer

For two years, Fox News has been investigating the short lives and violent deaths of Texas teenagers Amina and Sarah Said.

The sisters were riddled with bullets in their dad’s borrowed taxi cab on New Year’s Day 2008. As 911 operators listened in, Sarah appeared to name her father as the killer — her dying words: “Help! Help! My dad shot me… and now I’m dying!”

This kind of crime isn’t supposed to happen in America’s heartland — an honor killing.

Honor killings are when a father, husband or brother kills a wife, daughter or sister because he thinks she has “shamed” the family. The United Nations has found such murders are all too common in Muslim lands. Now they are happening here.

    How and why?

Through exclusive interviews and never-before-seen footage, Fox News exposes the implications of this shocking case.
