“ISRAEL INDEPENDENCE FUND RESPONDS TO THE NEW LEFT” by Fern Sidman

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Deeply troubled by the excessive philanthropic funding of a plethora of anti-Israel and left-wing non-governmental organizations by such umbrella charities as the Ford Foundation, the New Israel Fund and such polemical personalities as billionaire financier George Soros, the Israel Independence Fund has stepped up to the proverbial plate in a call to patriotism.

Established in 2007 by a board of directors consisting of Israelis and Americans concerned with the “cultural shift” in Israeli society, the Israel Independence Fund is a philanthropic fund whose objectives are to combat a “left-wing assault” on Israeli public opinion. The IIF distributes grants to nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Israel with patriotic, pro-Israel bents in an effort to offset the litany of left-wing groups that have cropped up in the Jewish state over the past several decades.

Aharon Pulver, the executive director of the Israel Independence Fund explains, “The main goal of the Israel Independence Fund is to advocate on behalf of the protection of the Jewish, Zionist and democratic character of the State of Israel. It is our job to secure and organize the necessary philanthropic support for projects and institutions that cherish the destiny of the Jewish people in Israel and will support like-minded grass roots organizations and movements both in Israel and in the Diaspora.”

As such the Israel Independence Fund now supports such organizations as the Arzei HaLevanon, Ma’alei Efraim Pre-Military Academy for Leadership in the Israel Defense Forces. The pre-military preparatory courses (Mechinot) are supervised and accredited by the Israel Ministry of Education and supervised by the IDF for Israeli youth about to begin their obligatory military service. The courses, imbued with Jewish ethics and conducted in an atmosphere of general academic excellence, pave the way for meaningful service in the Israel Defense Forces. They cultivate a cadre of socially conscious, well educated and uniquely motivated IDF officers and future community leaders.

Other recipients of IIF funding include Hatzala of Yehuda and Shromron, a voluntary humanitarian organization that provides emergency medical services and support for security activities in conflict areas throughout Israel – every day – 365 days a year, the Heritage Association of the Upper Galilee, MiBirashit, an educational movement that seeks to make Jewish knowledge and Zionist education accessible to Jews of all ages and was founded by Rabbi Mordechai Elon, head of the world renowned Yeshivat HaKotel in the Old City of Yerushalayim, Mishmeret Yesha, a non-profit organization provides Jewish towns and villages with life saving anti-terror training, security equipment and emergency medical equipment, and the Irgun HaShomer HaChadash (the New Israeli Guardsmen), a volunteer organization dedicated to protecting and defending Jewish farmers by helping to prevent incursions onto agricultural lands by hostile neighbors who steal crops, herds and farm equipment, often using arson as an effective tool.

Lauding the diligence of the New Israeli Guardsmen, Jerusalem Post columnist Caroline Glick said of them in a March 26. 2010 article, “Recognizing that the long-term solution to the problem is to increase the public’s dedication to classic Zionist ideals of Jewish control over the Land of Israel, in addition to building and manning guard posts, the Guardsmen organize courses and lectures on Jewish history, Zionism, Jewish philosophy and other relevant topics at their guard posts for the general public.”

The need for an organization such as the IIF is clarified in this July 6, 2010 statement by Professor Gerald Steinberg, president of NGO Monitor. He said that there are “many organizations that use US tax-exempt status to demonize and wage political war against Israel. In addition, European governments provide tens of millions of dollars annually, and without transparency, to opposition groups in Israel, many of which are behind the Goldstone Report.” He cites “relevant foundations” and NGOs transferring funds to radical groups in Israel or with 501(c)(3) status as the Ford Foundation, the New Israel Fund, the Open Society Institute, ICAHD-US, Friends of Sabeel, Middle East Children’s Alliance, AJ Muste, Deir Yassin Remembered, Grassroots.org, Advocacy Project, the Rachel Corrie Foundation, Birthright Unplugged, WESPAC, Groundspring.org, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Palestinian Right to Return Coalition and Jewish Voice for Peace.

The Ford Foundation achieved the dubious distinction of funding such NGOs as the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), an organization that played a major role in the UN sponsored World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance held in Durban, South Africa in September of 2001. This conference and the subsequent known as Durban II held in Geneva in 2009, posited Israel as the world’s “punching bag” for several thousand purported human rights activists spanning the globe. The PCHR has demonstrated that its primary objective is the political and ideological demonization of Israel, in sharp contrast to its claims to promote universal human rights.

A July 2008 JTA report states that, “Ford today is funding several organizations that engage in the “Durban strategy” – a two-pronged tactic launched at the ‘01 conference to paint Israel as a “racist, apartheid” state and isolate the Jewish nation through boycotts, divestment and sanctions.”

Mr. Pulver said, “We are currently seeking contributions both small and substantial for the invaluable organizations that we support. It is time for those who truly support the fortification of Israel’s standing as the fulfillment of Jewish national aspirations and the center of world Jewry to come forth and join us.”

“The North Korean Problem” by Todd Strandberg

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

North Korea has once again launched an unprovoked attack against South Korea. Last week, the North fired a barrage of artillery shells at the island of Yeonpyeong, killing four people and injuring dozens more.

In March, North Korea attacked a South Korean patrol boat and killed forty-six sailors. The North denied it was involved in the sinking, but investigators found overwhelming evidence pointing to a strike from a North Korean torpedo.

It is easy to see a clear pattern of escalation on the part of North Korea. For several years, Kim Jong Il alarmed his neighbors by either conducting a series of missile tests or by working on a nuclear program. The inability of the world powers to confront North Korea’s reckless behavior has caused us to reach a point that Kim Jong Il is willing to kill people to draw attention to himself or his future successor, his son, Kim Jong Un.

Dr. Michael Stoil is the head of the political science department at the University of Guam. He says that this most recent attack has a lot to do with the succession of Kim Jong Il. The North Korean dictator is getting old and is looking to have his twenty-six-year-old son, Kim Jong Un, take his place.

“If Kim Jong-il and his son visited the artillery unit and were briefed on the South Korean naval exercises, they are likely to have given final approval on the bombardment two days later,” said Yu Ho-yeol, professor of North Korean studies at Korea University.

“The North must have propagandized the deadly artillery firing as Jong-un’s achievement to help him gain a stronger grip on the military and bolster its solidarity.”

The U.S. is playing a very dangerous game in always trying to maintain the peace. In the two times that North Korea attacked the South, America has only offered words of condemnation. President Obama will need to do far better than a military exercise and a ruling in the UN Security Council if he wants to get Kim Jong-Il’s attention.

We should have already learned that North Korea cannot be trusted. Past diplomatic efforts with North Korea have proven to be a waste of time and money. In the 1980s, for agreeing to freeze its nuclear program, Pyongyang was given two light-water nuclear reactors to generate electricity and, until the reactors were operational, five hundred thousand metric tons of oil annually (nearly half its annual needs). The United States taxpayers helped pay for these lavish gifts.

During the years North Korea was receiving oil and food assistance, it was secretly completing two reactors capable of yielding weapons-grade fuel. When North Korea announced in 2004 that it had nuclear capability, it became clear that Pyongyang had played us for fools.

Just a few days ago, inspectors where shocked to find that North Korea has built a sophisticated uranium enrichment plant. A couple years ago, the Western media proudly showed images of North Korea destroying a plant used to make plutonium. At the time, I had stated that this was just a ruse, and now we all know the truth.

This weekend, I watched a video on YouTube entitled: “Explorer: Inside North Korea.” It was extremely unsettling in how it showed the average North Koreans are in a state of total mind control. They worship the Kim Jongs as if they were gods, and the North Korean military would rage war to the point of committing national suicide if the “Great Leaders” ordered them to do so.

The stand-off between North and South Korea may eventually end very badly. There is no direct reference to North Korea in the Bible, but there are clues about what might happen. We are told that the kings of the East will invade the Middle East. The name seems to imply that the whole region will be unified into vast army of two hundred million soldiers.

War is likely, because you can depend on the depravity of dictators. Saddam Hussein faced a coalition with vastly superior firepower, and yet he still refused to back down. Because North Korea is a land ruled by evil, its leader will eventually give into the most evil of thoughts. We may be witnessing the final stage of this madness.

“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13).

“AN EVENING OF CANTORIAL MUSIC ON THE UPPER WEST SIDE” by Fern Sidman

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Over 200 afficionados of cantorial music gathered at the West Side Institutional Synagogue on Manhattan’s upper west side Saturday evening, November 20th to enjoy the vocal stylings of a panoply of world class chazanim (cantors) at a very special kumsitz (party) organized by long time radio personality and music impresario, Charlie Bernhaut. The evening was considered a “cultural happening”, dedicated to the revivification of interest and activity in cantorial music, initiated by Mr. Bernhaut in 1977 with his legendary WFMU soul music radio program. Since that time, Mr. Bernhaut has taken a leading role in the organization of cantorial concerts with his partner Cantor Benny Rogoznitsky at New York City’s Philharmonic Hall and the Metropolitan Opera under the auspices of “Cantors World.”

The informal, spontaneous gathering featured the mellifluous voices of such cantorial giants as Zevi Muller, the cantor of the West Side Institutional Synagogue, Ben Zion Miller, the cantor of the Young Israel – Beth El congregation in Boro Park, Shimmy and Elie Miller, the sons of BenZion Miller, Yaakov Motzen, Elliott Yavneh, Asher Scharf, Chaim Berson, Marshall Wise, Daniel Schwartz, Binyamin Vixenspan, Menachem Cohen, Shimon Leitner and Aryeh Spielman. Accompanying the cantors was the premiere pianist and virtuoso Danny Gildar, who enjoys a stellar reputation as the finest in his genre.

“This evening of cantorial music can only be described as absolutely exceptional in every way”, said Shmuel Greenberg of Brooklyn, New York. “We are truly blessed by the Almighty to live in a generation of those who use their musical gifts to praise G-d and inspire the Jewish nation”, he continued. The established cantors voluntarily contributed their talents alongside musical neophytes, unknown to the audience, but still greatly appreciated.

Under his guidance, Mr. Bernhaut announced with great excitement that “The Cantorial Trio” has been formed which will feature Yanky Lemmer, Zevi Muller and Shimmy Miller. They are scheduled to perform at their inaugural concert at Merkin Hall in New York City on Sunday, February 20th at 2:00 p.m.

Mr. Bernhaut said that the, “West Side Institutional Synagogue and Rabbi Einhorn, deserve great praise for their devotion to Chazzanut (cantorial music). It is their great fortune to have Cantor Zevi Muller intoning the prayers for them every Shabbat (Sabbath) and it is our hope to expand programs of this kind for the entire Jewish community.”

Featured at the kumsitz (party) was a old fashioned “Victrola”, which was the predecessor of the modern phonograph and is part of Mr. Bernhaut’s collection which also includes gramaphones. His private collection of music includes over 15,000 Jewish albums that he regularly shares with his listeners.

For further information on cantorial events, please contact Mr. Bernhaut at: cbjmusic@aol.com or by visiting his web site at: www.charliebernhaut.com.

“Ben Bernanke’s Bad Bets” by Todd Strandberg

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Millions of Americans have no idea what “quantitative easing” is or how it will affect them personally. The recent announcement that the Federal Reserve will purchase another $600 billion in US Treasuries just adds to the mystery.

Fed Chief Ben Bernanke claims his reason for buying bonds is that he wants to stimulate the economy. His real motive is more likely the need to push up housing prices to save the banking system.

The banks may seem to have recovered, but they secretly hold millions of delinquent mortgages that are worth less than the value of the home. Rather than foreclose or sell the houses, the banks are just sitting on the mortgages, hoping for a miracle. There was testimony last week in the Senate from a Georgetown professor who said that the $400 billion in secondary mortgages held by the top four banks are only worth $200 billion. If these banks started writing off just these loans, it would wipe them out.

Bank of America might be the first Wall Street giant to crash and burn. It has a $2.3 trillion balance and none of the loans for its subsidiary Countrywide Financial — the criminal enterprise at the center of the sub-prime securitization market – have been written off. The regulators and the CEO may say all is well, but stock investors have rendered their verdict. The value of Bank of America’s outstanding stock is currently at around half of what it should be based on its “book value” — what the company says its holdings are worth.

You may remember, in April of 2009, the Financial Standards Accounting Board (FASB) changed the rules on how banks value their financial holdings. When it comes to real estate holdings, banks can value them at whatever they think they will get in the future. Since the rule change, hundreds of years of accounting protocol have been trashed, and instead of “mark to market” (valuing an asset for what it will bring today), you have “mark to fantasy.” (http://usawatchdog.com/as-banks-go-so-goes-the-economy)

You can just sit on a house and wait for its value to increase. Abandoned homes only go down in value. There is a bank-owned house down the street from me that had the front door open all summer. You can’t sell a house where the last residents were a family of raccoons. Many intercity homes have been systematically stripped of all their copper plumbing and fixtures.

While Bernanke is trying to save the banks, he is making a series of bets that have their own negative consequences. Over the past three years, the Fed has purchased over $2.3 trillion in U.S. debt. If interest rates start to rise, the Fed could lose hundreds of billions of dollars on these bonds.

The Fed also has a housing problem. It has made steady purchases of mortgage-backed securities, which increased from zero as of December 31, 2008, to over $1.25 trillion today. When Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac failed, the Federal Reserve added their loans to its balance sheet. Since the Fed suspended its rules against only accepting mortgage securities that are AAA rated, Bernanke and company may be holding a mountain of worthless paper.

The money Bernanke is providing to banks has failed to get into the hands of businesses and consumers. U.S. commercial banks are increasingly using the cash provided by the Federal Reserve to lend back to the government. Since June, the biggest banks bought about $127 billion of Treasuries. Commercial and industrial loans outstanding have fallen by about $68.5 billion this year.

The clock is rapidly running out on Bernanke’s gamble. In 2006, the federal debt has increased by more than half. It now stands at $13.8 trillion and has morphed to 94 percent of GDP. With shortfall of $1.5 trillion projected for the next several years, the debt will quickly reach $20 trillion by 2015.

I have been following the financial markets all my adult life, and am at loss to describe how hopeless the odds are against us solving this crisis. If the mortgage mess and debt bubble don’t get us, contagion from Europe ’s debt problems or the looming pension crisis will sink us.

Terry and I often talk about financial matters, and we believe this debt nightmare will unfold within the next couple of years. We can only guess where the Rapture fits in, but logic tells us it must be very near.

“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh” (Luke 21:28).

“HEBRON FUND “FLOTILLA” DINNER SAILS TO SUCCESS IN NEW YORK” by Fern Sidman

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Over 600 people boarded a luxury multi-level vessel called “The Cornucopia Majesty” at Pier 59 at Chelsea Piers on Tuesday evening, November 16th, as they set sail around the island of Manhattan in a unique celebration of Jewish life in Hebron. The “flotilla supporting peace and life” was the venue of choice for the 22nd annual gala Hebron Fund Dinner in New York.

In a twist of irony, the organizers of the dinner selected this setting as a direct response to the international condemnation of Israel following the Mavi Marmara episode on May 31st, in which Israeli commandos boarded the Turkish flagged ship that was headed to Gaza with the intent of breaking the naval blockade that Israel had imposed in order to prevent the smuggling of lethal weaponry to Hamas terrorists in the region. The purported “peace activists” on board the “Gaza Aid Flotilla” brandished knives and guns and violently attacked Israeli soldiers.

Distinguished criminal defense attorney, Benjamin Brafman served as the master of ceremonies for the much heralded event that attracted the usual contingent of counter-protestors who represented themselves as members of Jewish Voice for Peace and other assorted anti-Israel organizations.

“This is our idea of a real flotilla, where peaceful, fair minded, productive citizens come together to stand in support and solidarity with the people of Hebron”, said Mr. Brafman to thunderous applause. Spotlighting the centrality and prominence of Hebron to the Jewish nation as the very first capital of Israel, established by King David, Mr. Brafman and others spoke of Hebron as “the eternal resting place of our beloved antecedents” and a place that “is our permanent home; a place that symbolizes the unbreakable bond between Am Yisroel and Eretz Yisroel” and a place of “beauty and majesty where the past, present and future come together.”

Rabbi Simcha Hochbaum led the attendees in the recitation of chapter 21 in Tehillim (the book of Psalms) and explained that there is a dual meaning for the word “Horim” (mountains). “While the word “horim” that we read in Tehillim means mountains, it also means parents, telling us that in the mountains near Hebron there lies the resting places of our precious fathers and mothers and there is an inextricable bond between our ancestors, ourselves and our land”, he said.

Special prayers for the sick and infirmed in Hebron were said along with prayers for those missing in action including Cpl. Gilad Shalit (Gilad ben Aviva) who was abducted by Hamas terrorists in June of 2006 and American Jew, Jonathan Pollard (Yonatan ben Malka), the former civilian intelligence analyst who was convicted of spying for Israel.

Yossi Baumol, the executive director of the Hebron Fund said, “The Hebron Aid Flotilla was an exercise in freeing our minds from the hypocrisy and falsehoods of our times. But wielding the “Big Lie” is no modern invention. This evening’s dinner falls out on a most significant day. Tonight the Moslem world celebrates the holiday Eid-Al-Aida or in English, “Feast of the Sacrifice”. In Moslem tradition Yishmael replaces Yitzchak at the site of the Akeida. In their minds Yishmael is the sanctified bearer of the holy legacy.”

Also delivering remarks expressing gratitude to the honorees and those supporting the community in Hebron were dinner chairman, Teddy Pollak, Rabbi David Wilder and Rabbi Noam Arnon, spokesmen for the Jewish community of Hebron, Rabbi Simcha Hochbaum, Director of Tourism for the Jewish community of Hebron, and Avraham Ben Yosef, Mayor of Hebron.

Popular attorney, columnist and Long Island community leader, David Seidemann of Lawrence, New York along with his esteemed wife Jane were the recipients of the “Bonei Hevron” (Builders of Hevron) award. Mr. Seidemann is a longtime Hebron Fund board member and former Fund president. Mr. Seidemann is also an award winning columnist receiving national recognition for his articles that appear on a weekly basis in “The Jewish Star”.

The “Chasdei Avot” (Charity of the Patriarchs) award was presented to David and Joclyn Stern, two beloved activists on behalf of Hebron. The Sterns are regular guests in Hebron during the special “Chayei Sarah” weekends attended by tens of thousands each year. Mr. Stern is the president of Brooklyn’s Young Israel of Midwood synagogue and has led numerous missions to Hebron.

Fred and Carole Samuel were the recipients of the “Magen Avraham” (Abraham’s Shield) award for their constant devotion to the security of the people of Hebron. During their frequent trips to Hebron, they have established close and enduring friendships with the local residents and Mr. Samuel is currently spearheading an important Hebron related security project.

The “Aishet Chayil” (Woman of Valor) awardee for 2010 was the distinguished Ester Arieh-Hatanian. She is the mainstay of the Hebron Fund office in Brooklyn, New York and received the recognition that she so justly deserves for over a decade of dedicated service that can only be termed as above and beyond the call of duty.

The highlight of the evening was the address delivered by the guest of honor and keynote speaker, Ms. Caroline Glick. Ms. Glick is the managing editor of The Jerusalem Post, the Senior Fellow for Middle East Affairs of the Washington, DC based Center For Security Policy and chief diplomatic correspondent for the Makor Rishon newspaper. Ms. Glick was named by the Israeli newspaper Maariv as “the most prominent woman in Israel” and she also served as producer of the video clip entitled, “We Con the World” which spoofed the hypocrisy inherent in the public reaction to the Gaza flotilla incident. As a retired IDF captain, Ms. Glick received the auspicious “Gevurat Ha’Imahot” (Bravery of the Matriarchs) award.

“Tonight we celebrate not only the Jewish community of Hebron but the extraordinary tenaciousness of the Jewish people”, declared Ms. Glick. She spoke of the pre-1967 period when the closest Jews could come to praying at the Maar’at HaMachpela was on the seventh step, but she said, “This Jews stood as close as he could to the front of that seventh step and would not budge. She said that “this Jew” describes the core essence of the Jewish nation. “This Jew wouldn’t move, he wouldn’t be humiliated, he remained fully dedicated to Torat Israel and Eretz Yisrael; standing tall and upright just as a cedar tree. This Jew represents his nation; a people who exuded Jewish pride and said Kaddish despite everything” she said, adding that, “When I get tired I think of that Jew on the seventh step.”

Ms. Glick cited the miraculous accomplishments of the nation of Israel over the last 62 years since the birth of the modern State of Israel and said, “Israel is a work in progress and it waxes and wanes with the strength of the Jewish people. She lauded the courageous Jewish residents of Hebron saying that they are, “the North Star of our people, a community that is fiercely dedicated to Torah, to G-d and to their people and is representative of the kind of perseverance that has come to define our nation.”

Making oblique references to the lack of leadership in the current Israeli government, Ms. Glick said, “The Talmud tells us that the year before Moshiach is expected to arrive, we will be led by dogs. Dogs are not leaders, but rather they stand in front of you waiting for you to guide them where to go. The more boldly we lead, the more boldly our leaders will be.”

She called upon those present and the entire Jewish people to “bring the geulah closer by supporting the people of Hebron who live in the very same place that remains the resting place of our patriarchs and matriarchs” and by proclaiming to the world that “the land of Israel is not a refuge, it is not a ghetto, but it is our home; a country where Jews can live freely.”

Commenting on Ms. Glick’s address, Helen Freedman, executive director of Americans For a Safe Israel said, “Our AFSI chizuk mission just returned from Hebron where we spent Shabbos Chaya Sora with thousands of Jews in Hebron and it is clear that if the Jewish people do not have a right to Hebron, we certainly have no right to a Tel Aviv that was built in 1905. The Jewish ownership of Hebron is stated in the Torah and it is through our connection to our ancestors that we will survive as a nation.”

“AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY CELEBRATED IN THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE” by Fern Sidman

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Contemporary American Jewry experienced one of it’s signature moments on Sunday afternoon, November 14th, as over 1000 people from all over the world gathered to attend the spectacular dedication and grand opening of a “first of its kind” museum on Independence Mall in Philadelphia. Originally founded in 1976, The National Museum of American Jewish History has shared a building with the historic Congregation Mikveh Israel, but now is being housed in a $150 million, 5-story state of the art building, designed by famed architect James Stewart Polshek.

The 100,000-square-foot museum, located near Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center and directly across from the Liberty Bell, will be exclusively dedicated to exhibiting and interpreting the vibrant legacy of American Jews, spanning more than 350 years, from the arrival of the first Jewish community in 1654 to the present. Across three-and-a-half floors, the museum’s core exhibition explores the religious, cultural, political and economic stories of American Jews as well as examining themes of democracy, religious innovation versus continuity, immigration and integration, and the various lifestyles and aspirations of this immigrant community. The main exhibit features historical artifacts, interactive media and narrative storytelling, while illuminating the history of American Jewish life with evocative objects, thirty original films and cutting-edge technology.

Mr. Polshek said that the exterior envelope of the museum is comprised of two interwoven and interdependent building volumes. The first volume, the diaphanous glass prism that faces Independence Mall, expresses the accessibility of the museum’s mission. Its luminosity beckons onlookers to enter; a reminder of the open door that greeted their forebears finding sanctuary in America. The glass also announces the fragility of the democracy that is the guarantor of the freedoms that have made this country so desirable a destination.

The curator of the core exhibition is Josh Perelman, Ph.D, the museum’s deputy director of exhibitions, programs and collections, and chief curator, who worked with a team of leading historians of American Jewish history from across the country.

The many fascinating artifacts that are on display are drawn from the museum’s collection, other prominent museums including the Smithsonian Institution; of which the museum is an affiliate and private lenders. Among the treasures to be viewed are an 1862 Confederate $2 bill with a portrait of Judah P. Benjamin, the Confederacy’s Secretary of State, a handwritten copy of “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, and the nameplate from the chair of Supreme Court Justice, Louis D. Brandeis.

The exhibition also includes a Contemporary Issues Forum and the “It’s Your Story” video storytelling booths which will allow visitors and their families to record stories about their families’ histories and have them archived in the museum. They will also be sent a link so that their stories can be emailed to others or posted on social media sites.

“American Jews are experiencing perhaps the greatest freedoms we’ve enjoyed in Judaism’s long, multi-thousand year history. These freedoms come directly from our nation’s foundational documents, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, which were forged on the scared ground of Independence Mall. It is, therefore, compellingly appropriate that the National Museum of American Jewish History is located on the Mall, the very birthplace of American liberty”, declared Michael Rosenzweig, the president and CEO of the NMAJH.

Andrea Mitchell, the NBC news chief foreign affairs correspondent served as master of ceremonies for the historic event and enthusiastically greeted the overflowing audience. The Honorable Michael A. Nutter, Mayor of the City of Philadelphia told the audience, “It is a tremendous honor and privilege for me to be here on this most historic day in US history. Today we pay tribute to the multifarious contributions and accomplishments of Jews from around the globe who played such a major role in the history of the United States. It is no irony that this most special and unique museum is located on the most historic mall in America, where liberty and justice were originally proclaimed.”

“Even though I never had the opportunity to obtain a Jewish education or even have a Bar Mitzvah, my parents made it their business that I would never forget and would continue to support my Jewish heritage”, said Edward G. Rendell, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He added that, “This outstanding museum will facilitate in promulgating the exceptional narrative of Jewish life in the United States to all people, irrespective of religion or nationality.”

The keynote address was delivered by Vice President Joseph Biden who said, “The National Museum of American Jewish History stands as a permanent and invaluable tool in helping to preserve the uniqueness of the American Jewish experience and heritage and also celebrates the freedoms that we all enjoy in the United States”. Vice President Biden relayed a story about a rabbi in Lithuania, who in the early 1800s heard of a liberty bell in the United States that proclaimed the words of the Bible, “To declare liberty throughout the land” and asked one of his students if this was true. The student answered in the affirmative but told the rabbi that the liberty bell had a crack in it. The rabbi responded that it is the obligation of the Jews to mend that crack through means of their philanthropic endeavors including the building of schools and hospitals. VP Biden added that, “The Jewish people took this directive very seriously and became leaders in the arts, in politics, sports, law and the economy and truly vitalized and enhanced the building of our great country.”

The National Museum of American Jewish History will be open to the general public on Friday, November 26th. The hours or operation are Tuesday-Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and weekends from 10 am through 5:30 pm. The museum in closed on Mondays and all federal holidays that fall on Monday. The admission rates for adults are $12.00 and $11.00 for seniors, active military personnel and youth ages 13-21. For more information please visit the NMAJH web site at: www.nmajh.org.

“Woman to Hang For ‘Defaming’ Prophet Mohammed” by Katie Pavlich

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

A Christian woman with five children in Pakistan is scheduled to be hanged after being convicted for blasphemy after Muslim clerics say she defamed the Prophet Mohammed.

Remember how CAIR blocked the ban of Sharia law in America? Meaning Sharia law can still make its way into the U.S. court system.

From the UK Telegraph:

Asia Bibi, a 45-year-old mother-of-five, denies blasphemy and told investigators that she was being persecuted for her faith in a country where Christians face routine harassment and discrimination.

The court heard she had been working as a farmhand in fields with other women, when she was asked to fetch drinking water.

Some of the other women – all Muslims – refused to drink the water as it had been brought by a Christian and was therefore “unclean”, according to Mrs Bibi’s evidence, sparking a row.

The incident was forgotten until a few days later when Mrs Bibi said she was set upon by a mob.

The police were called and took her to a police station for her own safety.

Shahzad Kamran, of the Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan, said: “The police were under pressure from this Muslim mob, including clerics, asking for Asia to be killed because she had spoken ill of the Prophet Mohammed.

Well, apparently the Muslim mob won this battle.

“Foreshadows of Ferocity” by Terry James

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

The San Francisco Giants won the 2010 World Series Monday, November 1. It was the first time the team has won the Series since 1954, when the franchise was playing as the New York Giants in the Polo Grounds. It should have been a reason for happiness, right? –At least, if you were a Giants fan, and weren’t a Texas Rangers fan. Certainly, it should have been a time of celebratory jubilation on the streets of San Francisco, one would think.

The victory was acknowledged by many, with self-congratulations all around. However, the dark side of humanity showed up–as it always seems to do—in demonstration of the malevolent side of humankind.

As fans packed the streets, there were some violent incidents reported such as fires, several fistfights and a mob attack on a vehicle that was driven into a crowd. KTVU.com posted stunning helicopter footage of a large fire that was started at the intersection of Mission and 22nd streets followed by a driver’s attempt to steer into the crowd. The car was stopped, its windshields were smashed and passengers were attacked. Riot police arrived soon after the melee and the crowd began to thin out. (http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/11/02/san-francisco-riots-follow-giants-world-series-victory/?synd=1)

The rioting is, of course, not without precedent. We have witnessed it time after time in large cities whose sports teams have won world championships. We have only to recall Chicago during the time when Michael Jordan ruled the NBA courts with the Chicago Bulls, and the victories of the L.A. Lakers and the rioting aftermath in some areas of Los Angeles. One can but look in open-mouthed wonder upon such obstreperous behavior–all in the name of celebrating something that’s supposed to be fun, and “good.”

The founding fathers of this nation wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution with almost consensus acknowledgement that man’s nature is depraved–fallen from the time of Eden. Peoples around the world have consistently validated that view of the human condition by often exhibiting unseemly comportment. Except in the most tyrannical and oppressive of regimes, people often become unruly if things push them to the limits. Even such fear as those governments can present sometimes can’t assuage the masses.

People will face down tanks and machine guns in some extreme cases, as was witnessed by the Tiananmen Square uprising during the Olympic Games held in China some decades ago. Those Chinese faced down the murderous red military in a righteous cause of seeking liberty by demonstrating through the cameras of the world how brutal were their masters.

So, it is not against these courageous sorts that I write for our purposes here. There is a time for protests–for righteous uprisings. I put much of the civil rights protests of Martin Luther King Jr.’s day in that category to some extent. Although some of it was for the sake of crass political power grabs among certain of the day’s left-wing politicians and community organizers, much of the demonstrations and actions taken were necessary to break the oppressive grip of racial bigotry.

Those who riot simply because they are riotous–unbridled in their “if it feels good do it” hedonism—fit, in my view of things, into the category that is the subject of this commentary. They are of the classification I believe the apostle Paul was writing about, as recorded in his second letter to Timothy: “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be…incontinent, fierce” (2 Tim. 3:1-3).

Out of sheer, uncontrolled determination to smash their way through life, no matter what they break or who they hurt, those who live riotously prove the founding fathers right. The depravity of man is front-and-center for all to witness. It is an end-times signal that is manifest time after time in this generation.

That brings us to the purpose of our constitution, our laws. No individual or class of individuals has the right to trample on the property or person of others. It is codified; it was put there by Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, and all the rest. They got these precepts from the Word of God–the Bible.

We have recently watched the riots in Greece, Spain, and other places where populaces, being weaned off the spigots of socialistic largesse, have acted as riotously as the mobs that burn down parts of their cities because their teams won. Governments are no longer capable of taxing the income-producing, working people of those nations enough to pay for the welfare and various other social programs politicians voted in time after time in order to gather votes to themselves.

Governments, hopefully, have enough funds to defend against violence in the streets. One American city is so doing, it seems. INDIANAPOLIS — Armed security guards will be on hand at 36 unemployment offices around Indiana in what state officials said is a step to improve safety and make branch security more consistent… [Marc Lotter, Department of Workforce Development spokesman] said the agency is merely being cautious with the approach of an early-December deadline when thousands of Indiana residents could see their unemployment benefits end after exhausting the maximum 99 weeks provided through multiple federal extension periods.

“Given the upcoming expiration of the federal extensions and the increased stress on some of the unemployed, we thought added security would provide an extra level of protection for our employees and clients,” he said. (“Unemployment Offices to Add Armed Guards,” Indiana News Story, WRTV, Nov. 2, 2010)

Let’s pray that economic conditions in America don’t become so desperate that they eventuate in violence like that seen in other countries. However, the fierce nature of fallen man hasn’t stopped raising its hideous head since the time that the first man rebelled and determined to do what was right in his own eyes, rather than what God chose for him. The ferocity is prophetically scheduled to get infinitely worse, when the Holy Spirit withdraws from governing the consciences of mankind in the way He does at present: “For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way” (2 Thess. 2:7).

The Restrainer–the Holy Spirit—will remove as governor of the unbridled evil of mankind when the Rapture takes place. God will allow the “mystery of iniquity” to strongly influence all who will not come to Christ for salvation during the last seven years of human history leading up to Christ’s Second Advent (Rev. 19:11). The foreshadows of that Luciferian evil are darkening our daily lives as never before. Each person who names the name of Christ must shine truth from God’s Word in order to illuminate the pathway to Jesus in these closing days of the age.

“RABBI MEIR KAHANE’S LEGACY REMEMBERED AT THREE NEW YORK EVENTS” by Fern Sidman

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

“Today we gather to pay tribute to the life and legacy of the greatest Jewish leader of our time,” said Gennadiy Fabyshenko, a Russian-Jewish activist who taken the lead role in organizing previous yahrzeit commemorations for Rabbi Kahane, ZTK”L. Over 500 people gathered at the Ocean Avenue Jewish Center in Brooklyn on Sunday, November 7th to commemorate the 20th yahrzeit of Rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the Jewish Defense League and head of the Kach party in Israel. Rabbi Kahane was assassinated on November 5, 1990 at the Marriott Hotel in New York by Egyptian terrorist, El Sayyid Nosair.

Among the speakers were Bob Unger of the Conservative Society for Action, Norman Krug, a Russian Jewish activist, Gennadiy Fabyshenko, Rabbi Herbert Bomzer of the Young Israel of Ocean Parkway, Robert Muchnik of the Manhigut Yehudit party and Meir Weinstein, director of the Jewish Defense League of Canada.

Rabbi Kahane was praised as an exceptionally prescient man; possessed of brilliance, integrity and courage for his role in championing such issues as the freedom of Soviet Jews, the physical defense of Jews throughout the world, and his program spotlighting the demographic threat that the Arab population in Israel represents.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 1, 1932 to Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga HaCohen Kahane and his wife Sonia, Rabbi Meir Kahane’s love of Zion began as a youth when he joined both the Betar Zionist youth movement and the B’nei Akiva movement. He graduated from the Brooklyn Talmudical Academy High School in Brooklyn and earned his B.A. in political science from Brooklyn College, his J.D. degree from New York Law School and his L.L.M degree from New York University Law School. He received his rabbinical ordination from the Mirrer Yeshiva in Brooklyn and gained a reputation for being an erudite Torah scholar, being fully conversant in Talmud and Tanach. He also served as a pulpit rabbi and a teacher in the 1960s.

In 1968, he founded the Jewish Defense League as a response to the rising tide of anti-Semitism in America’s inner cities. Under Rabbi Kahane’s leadership, JDL members engaged in protests against anti-Semitic teachers in the public school system, provided escorts for elderly Jews and educated Jewish youth in the art of self-defense. With a membership numbering over 15,000, the JDL organized mass rallies in New York against the Soviet Union’s policy of persecuting Zionist activists and curbing Jewish immigration to Israel and they played the lead role in the “Free Soviet Jewry” movement through campaigning for the release of Russian refuseniks and their emigration to Israel. JDL also protested against the oppression of Jewish population in Muslim countries, battled Neo-Nazis and white supremacists in the United States and resisted Christian missionaries’ activity to convert Jews.

In 1980, Rabbi Kahane formed the Kach political party in Israel and in 1984 was elected as a Member of the Knesset (MK). Rabbi Kahane refused to take the standard oath of office upon his election and insisted on adding a verse from Tehillim to indicate that when secular laws and Torah conflict, Torah law should have supremacy over the laws of the Knesset. Rabbi Kahane’s legislative proposals focused on transferring the hostile Arab population out of Israel, revoking the Israeli citizenship for non-Jews and banning Jewish-Gentile marriages and sexual relations, based on the Code of Jewish Law compiled by the Rambam in the Mishneh Torah.

As Rabbi Kahane’s message continued to strongly resonate with the Israeli population, the Central Elections Committee had banned him from being a candidate on the grounds that Kach was a racist party, but the Israeli high court determined that the Committee was not authorized to ban Rabbi Kahane’s candidacy. The High Court suggested that the Knesset should pass a law that would authorize the exclusion of racist parties from future elections, and the Anti-Racist Law of 1988 was later passed. Despite the boycott, Rabbi Kahane’s popularity grew. Polls showed that Kach would have likely received three to four seats in the coming November 1988 elections, with some earlier polls forecasting as many as twelve seats (10% of popular vote), possibly making Kach Israel’s third largest party. In 1985, the Knesset passed an amendment to Israel’s basic law, barring “racist” candidates from election. The committee banned Rabbi Kahane a second time, and he appealed to the Israeli High Court. This time the court found in favor of the committee, disqualifying Kach from running in the 1988 elections.

Rabbi Kahane is the author of such books as “Time to Go Home”, “Our Challenge”, “Never Again”, “Why Be Jewish?”, “The Story of the Jewish Defense League”, “Listen World, Listen Jew”, “They Must Go”, “Uncomfortable Questions for Comfortable Jews”, “Israel: Revolution or Referendum”. His magnum opus is the two volume set on Torah concepts entitled, “Ohr HaRayon – The Jewish Idea”.

“Rabbi Kahane’s death does not mean that activists should only come together once a year to remember him”, said Norman Krug, a Russian-Jewish activist. “When I was a 15 year-old boy in the former Soviet Union, I read in the Pravda newspaper that there was a group of “fascist hooligans” called the JDL who were fighting for our freedom and I could not have been prouder. When I arrived in the United States I pledged my heart to Rabbi Kahane and joined him in his crucial work. I urge everyone here today to remember Rabbi Kahane’s legacy by becoming involved in Jewish causes”, he said.

Rabbi Herbert Bomzer of the Young Israel of Ocean Parkway recalled his friendship with Rabbi Kahane that spanned over 50 years. “I first met Rabbi Kahane in 1955 and I so enjoyed the Shabbos meals that he spent with our family. He was a man that was truly “Osek B’Torah”, immersed in Torah all the time. He has tremendous gusto and courage and possessed no fear of any person. When I was the principal of BTA, I invited him to address our students and he told them not to become an ignorant activist, but rather to become a scholar-warrior, someone who learns Torah and raises his fists for the Jewish people”, he said.

“Rabbi Kahane’s blood is crying out to us”, declared Meir Weinstein, the director of the JDL in Canada. “Today the Arabs stand poised to annihilate us and we are obligated to keep Rabbi Kahane’s message alive by preserving Israel as a Jewish state. If the Arabs won’t acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state, then they will have to go”, he said, as he called for the re-location of the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. What we need now, more than ever, are those who have a Jewish head attached to a Jewish fist, as Rabbi Kahane always said”, he said.

Following the yahrzeit, Mr. Weinstein led a group of Kahane supporters at a special rally at Ground Zero, where he called Rabbi Kahane the first victim of Al Qeada terrorism on US soil. He decried the proposed building of a mosque at Ground Zero saying that, “the ideology that will be taught in this mosque is the same ideology that is responsible for the murder of Rabbi Kahane”. Weinstein said that the mosque would represent Islamic dominance as does the mosque that stands on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and said, “it is yet another attempt to make all non-Muslims subservient to them”. Rally participants held aloft signs saying, “From the River to the Sea, the Land of Israel Must be Free” and “Arabs Out Now, it Doesn’t Matter How”.

Josh Davis, a rally attendee said, “The Jewish people and the nation of Israel now face imminent dangers to their very survival. Had we paid heed to Rabbi Kahane’s message of expelling the malignant Arab population back in the early 80s, we would not be at the verge of extinction. Many people still deny that there is an demographic threat even though there are many Arab members of Knesset. Just as Rabbi Kahane said: Through the principle of a western democracy, the Arabs will quietly, democratically vote us out of existence, and if this is not happening today, it going to happen very soon.”

The West Side Institutional Synagogue in Manhattan was the site of a third yahrzeit commemoration of the life and legacy of Rabbi Kahane, as over 250 people joined to hear the words of such speakers as Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D) of Brooklyn, renowned criminal defense attorney, Barry Slotnick, long time radio talk show host, Barry Farber and Helen Freedman, executive director of Americans For a Safe Israel.

Shannon Taylor, Esq, a close associate of Rabbi Kahane, chaired the event along with Cecelia Margules and delivered the introductory remarks, saying that while Rabbi Kahane was alive, he was condemned by the Jewish establishment but now, “everyone In Israel knows that Kahane was right”.

Helen Freedman, executive director of Americans For a Safe Israel (AFSI), recounted her recent experiences on the semi-annual AFSI Chizuk mission to Israel which she said, “confirms the prophecies of Rav Kahane.” She described the proliferation of illegal Arab building throughout the Galilee, the Negev, Jerusalem, Hebron, Judea and Samaria, while highlighting the fact that the Israeli government is threatening to destroy Jewish homes, yeshivas and synagogues in an effort to appease the enemy. She concluded with noting that Rabbi Kahane always included his “only relevant solution: the understanding by the Jew that his fate lies only in knowing that he is part of the Chosen People of G-d…If we walk in His statutes there will be peace and redemption. If not …there will be awesome tragedies and horrors.”

Assemblyman Dov Hikind, a former member of the JDL, described his efforts to support the people of Gush Katif before the 2005 expulsion and reminded people that his mother, who was with him in the audience, was a Holocaust survivor. He recounted experiences he had with Rabbi Kahane when he was a youngster, and quoted him as saying, “Let us not fear the world. Those who stood by during the Holocaust and did the same when Israel faced destruction in 1948 and 1967 have nothing to tell us. Faith in the G-d of Israel and a powerful Jewish army are the only guarantors of Jewish survival. Far better a Jewish State that survives and is hated by the world , than an Auschwitz that brings us its love and sympathy.”

Cecilia Margules spoke about her special ties to Rabbi Kahane and then introduced vocalist Michael Elias and musician Rami Yadid, who played a song composed by Cecilia entitled, “A Special Man” as well as “Od Yosef Chai” with music by Ms. Margules and Rami Yadid and lyrics by Evelyn Haies. She then delivered special greetings from Rebbetzin Libby Kahane, the widow of Rabbi Kahane.

“Political Musical Chairs” by Todd Strandberg

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

It was nice to see the Republicans win a huge victory in the House and Senate. My greatest delight on election night was watching the liberal media try to put a positive spin on the bloodbath. The left had not seen such a loss since the Great Depression.

Despite the historic nature of the victory, I found it difficult to be overly thrilled about the elections. I kept asking myself, “Do I really have a dog in this race?” I’ve never had such a glum reaction to a U.S. election.

The vote did have some positive results. The Republican gained a majority of 60+ seats in the house and 6 seats in the Senate. In my home state of Iowa, voters fired three judges who approved of gay marriage. In California, Proposition 19, the measure that would make recreational use of marijuana legal, was rejected by voters.

There were several negative results from the election. Barney Frank was reelected in Massachusetts. I realize that his openly gay status means nothing today, but I could not believe the citizens of that state would ignore his involvement in the banking crisis. Jerry Brown was voted back as the governor of California. Brown did a terrible job of running the state in the seventies, and now the voters have put him back in charge at a time when California is on the verge of bankruptcy.

I think the key reason the 2010 election has a hollow ring to it is the fact that we are mostly repeating the events of two years ago. In the 2008 election, voters went to the polls with a “throw-the-bums-out” mentality. Because we still have a high unemployment rate, during this election cycle, the Democrats were now viewed as the bums.

This game of election musical chairs reminds me of the story of a farmer who promised his vote to the Democratic candidate, and ten minutes later he promised his vote to the Republican candidate who was seeking the same office. To his wife’s rebuke, he replied cannily: “Did you notice how pleased each of the candidates were?” “Yes.” “Well, I pleased them both, and on election day, I will please myself, and then we shall all be pleased together.”

There is already a strong indication that Washington DC failed to get the message that voters were trying to send. We still have months until the new Congress, and our leaders are already showing that they just don’t get it.

John Boehner is set to be the new Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, and he has already said that the repeal of the Health Care Reform Bill‎ is his top priority. Boehner has no chance of killing the bill outright because Democrats still control the White House and the Senate.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told Republican leaders that the top goal now was to capture the White House in 2012.

President Obama showed his lack of concern by blaming the election losses on his lack of communication with the American people. He apparently was too busy doing good things for voters to explain to them what was happening.

Our nation faces huge financial problems that require immediate attention. I would say the most significant event of last week was the Federal Reserve’s decision to buy nearly a trillion dollars more of Uncle Sam’s debt. It’s insanity to think that we can cover our ballooning national debt by having a second party, in name only, gobbling up our IOUs. The dollar is collapsing because traders are starting to realize that the U.S. is a risky bit.

Another problem with the election is the lack of concern over moral issues. The Republican Party made the decision to avoid hot-button issues like abortion and gay marriage. When you cut God out of the political process, you end up with a government that is doomed to failure.

This weekend, I was watching a program on the drug wars, and I noticed a clip of President Reagan talking about the problem of drug use. It reminded me of how far politicians have gotten from talking about sin of any form. All we hear out of Obama’s mouth is stuff related to the economy and terrorism.

I don’t see the game of musical chairs going on for much longer. Either we will elect a new party that returns our nation to biblical values, or we will reach a point where society collapses into dictatorship. It always good to hope for the best, but Bible prophecy and the present looming danger tell me the latter of the two is in America’s future.

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chron. 7:14).

“‘HEBRON AID FLOTILLA’ SAILS INTO NEW YORK” by Fern Sidman

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

While most political and religious organizations and assorted worthwhile charities generally select such venues as tony hotel ballrooms or lavish catering halls to hold their fundraising events, The Hebron Fund has announced that it will be breaking with this tradition as they prepare to host their annual dinner in New York City on Tuesday evening, November 16th. In a symbolic departure from past rituals, this year’s dinner attendees will be feasting on a sumptuous smorgasbord and listening to inspirational speeches while cruising around the island of Manhattan on a ship that can hold up to 1000 people.

Billed as the “Hebron Aid Flotilla”, the event was created as a response to the international condemnation of Israel’s May 31st, 2010 commando raid on the MV Marvi Marmara, a Turkish flagged ship that was part of a six ship flotilla sponsored by the “Free Gaza Movement” and an Islamic Turkish NGO called the IHH (The Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief). The stated intent of those on board this ship was to break the longstanding Israeli naval blockade of Gaza. The blockade had been imposed by Israel in order to prevent the smuggling of lethal arms and weapons to Hamas terrorists who would then, in turn, use these weapons against Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Weapon-wielding Hamas apologists who presented themselves as “activists” for “the freedom of Palestinians in Gaza” instigated the violence that left nine supporters of Hamas terrorism dead as Israeli commandos acted in self-defense as they boarded the ship in order to peacefully convince the activists to give up. Two Israeli commandos sustained gunshot wounds as their guns were wrested away by the “peace activists” on board and other soldiers were severely beaten and stabbed.

“After the world absurdly condemned Israel for a boarding a terrorist flotilla, we decided to hold our fundraiser on a ship. Our flotilla will support peace and life”, declared Yossi Baumol, Executive Director of the Hebron Fund. Giving voice to the prominence and centrality of Hebron to the Jewish nation, Baumol added, “Hebron is one of the holiest Jewish cities, where the Cave of the Patriarchs is located. Hebron was the first tract of land purchased in the Land of Israel by the first Jew of the world. Just as Jews can live freely in Harlem, Moscow and Paris, so too are they free to live and build anywhere they choose in the Land of Israel. We are thrilled at the expansion of Jewish life in all areas of the so called West Bank and we decry the anti-Semitic attempts to curb that expansion.”

Mr. Baumol also made a point of thanking the dozen or so anarchist protestors who campaign against the Hebron Fund dinners every year because the publicity that is generated by this opposition, “does so much to bring out our supporters in droves. They are worth their weight in gold”, he said. In November of 2009, the Hebron Fund dinner was held at the Ceasar’s Club at Citi Field, the new home of The New York Mets baseball team. Despite the rabid protests by such groups as Jews Against the Occupation and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the Mets organization stood by their commitment to rent the venue to the organizers of the Hebron Fund.

The Hebron Fund is proud to announce that the master of ceremonies at this year’s dinner will be the esteemed criminal defense attorney Benjamin Brafman and the guest of honor and keynote speaker will be Ms. Caroline Glick, the managing editor of The Jerusalem Post, the Senior Fellow for Middle East Affairs of the Washington, DC based Center For Security Policy and chief diplomatic correspondent for the Makor Rishon newspaper. Ms. Glick was named by the Israeli newspaper “Maariv” as “the most prominent woman in Israel” and she also served as producer of the video clip entitled, “We Con the World” which spoofed the hypocrisy inherent in the public reaction to the Gaza flotilla incident. As a retired IDF captain, Ms. Glick will receive the auspicious “Gevurat Ha’Imahot” (Bravery of the Matriarchs) award. Other special guests, including both American and Israeli politicians will also be present.

Popular attorney, columnist and Long Island community leader, David Seidemann of Lawrence, New York along with his esteemed wife Jane will be the recipients of the “Bonei Hevron” (Builders of Hevron) award. Mr. Seidemann is a longtime Hebron Fund board member and former Fund president.

The “Chasdei Avot” (Charity of the Patriarchs) award will be bestowed to David and Joclyn Stern, two beloved activists on behalf of Hebron. The Sterns are regular guest in Hebron during the special “Chayei Sarah” weekends attended by tens of thousands each year. Mr. Stern is the president of Brooklyn’s Young Israel of Midwood synagogue and has led numerous missions to Hebron.

Fred and Carole Samuel are slated to receive the “Magen Avraham” (Abraham’s Shield) award for their constant devotion to the security of the people of Hebron. During their frequent trips to Hebron, they have established close and enduring friendships with the local residents and Mr. Samuel is currently spearheading an important Hebron related security project.

The “Aishet Chayil” (Woman of Valor) awardee for 2010 is the distinguished Ester Arieh-Hatanian. She is the mainstay of the Hebron Fund office in Brooklyn, New York and will be receiving the recognition that she so justly deserves for over a decade of dedicated service that can only be termed as above and beyond the call of duty.

“The Jewish settlements are legal and donations to humanitarian and religious causes are tax deductible by law regardless of the ethnicity or the location of the recipients”, said Mr. Baumol. “We encourage Americans to provide tax deductible donations to aid the residents of Judea and Samaria. President Obama must know that discrimination against the expansion of Jewish life won’t be tolerated”, he added.

The “Hebron Aid Flotilla” will set sail at 6:00 pm on Tuesday evening, November 16th on Pier 59 at Chelsea Piers. Those interested in attending this unique celebration of Jewish life in Hebron may contact The Hebron Fund at 718-677-6886 or by e-mail at: es@hebron.com, or hebronfund@aol.com. “The Promised Land: An Unbroken Promise” by Todd Strandberg

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

God’s declaration in the Bible that the Promised Land belongs to the Jewish people is no longer valid–so says a council of Catholic bishops. The Vatican synod on the Middle East said that Jews cannot use the Bible to justify new settlements in Jerusalem or territorial claims.

U.S. Archbishop Cyril Salim Bustros heads the commission that issued the statement. He told reporters, “For Christians, one can no longer talk of the land promised to the Jewish people… There is no longer a favored people, a chosen people; all men and women of every country have become the chosen people.” He also said that the promise of the Creator was “abolished by the presence of Christ.”

The synod’s concluding message repeated a Vatican call for Jerusalem to have a special status “which respects its particular character” as a city sacred to the three great monotheistic religions–Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

The Vatican is dead wrong on this issue. Those with even the most basic understanding of Scripture should know how boneheaded it is for any group to make such an outrageous statement. The Word of God is very clear that God has an everlasting covenant with Israel:

And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. And I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojourning, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. (Genesis 17:7-8)

Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I so abhor them as to destroy them, breaking My covenant with them; for I am the Lord their God. But I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the Lord. (Leviticus 26:44-45)

“Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel , and they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine, and make gardens and eat their fruit. I will also plant them on their land, and they will not again be rooted out from their land which I have given them,” says the Lord your God. (Amos 9:14-15)

Anyone trying to argue that the Jews have no exclusive right to the Promised Land has a huge problem with reality. God’s chosen people are back in the land that was promised them. If God has had a change of heart regarding their status, one would think that He would have prevented them from regathering in Israel to avoid any confusion.

I don’t understand how these Catholic bishops can have a knowledge of the miracle called modern-day Israel and not see God’s divine hand at work. It’s not like a group of Jews was searching the real estate want ads, happened to notice that the land of Judea was on the market, and decided to buy it. Israel was reborn as a result of unbelievable odds.

Most troubling here is the lack of outrage over the statement made by this Vatican synod. Apart from postings on a few prophecy sites, there was no negative reaction from fellow Christian groups. The Catholic Church has blood on its hands from centuries of anti-Semitism. It defies common sense for any Vatican organization to go down this path.

The people of the Koran almost have a monopoly on international terrorism. Just a few days ago, Arabs in Yemen tried to send bombs to two Jewish centers in the U.S.

The devil is working overtime to turn public support away from the Jews and towards the Muslim world. I defy anyone to come up with a logical explanation for this bizarre alignment taking place.

If world leaders had a basic understanding of prophecy, there would be no debate over Israel’s right to the Promised Land. Because we have lost sight of key Bible passages, our nation is doomed to side with the forces that will attack Israel and incur God’s wrath.

And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. (Zechariah 12:3)

Republicans Capture House in Historic Wave; Democrats Cling to Senate

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

After the presidential election of 2008, the press wanted us to believe, with Obama capturing 52% of the popular vote, that the country had given him a mandate. Of course, four years earlier, they called George W. Bush’s 51% a “divided country”, but to people with an agenda, 1% can spell the difference between division and a mandate. But I digress…
Yesterday the people spoke again. This time, they spoke clearly. They used to vote to tell Obama and the Democrats quite clearly: we don’t like your policies, we don’t like your agenda, we don’t like the direction you are taking our country, we don’t like your socialism, we don’t like your spending our money like you do, we don’t like your taxation, we don’t like your duplicity and we don’t really like you as people.
So now we have a Republican controlled congress and a stronger Republican presence in the Senate.
Republicans have a chore on their hands. They must try to undo all the damage Obama and the Democrats have done.
Talk about mandates, now there’s a mandate. It’s going to be tough. We will see if they are up to the task.

President Obama plans to face the nation Wednesday after Republicans made historic gains in Congress, signaling to what degree he plans to work with the new majority party in the House of Representatives.

The president is expected to speak to reporters Wednesday afternoon. The address comes after Republicans cruised to power in the House and vowed to take the country in a new direction, urging Obama to “change course” and join them in reining in the size and budget of the federal government.

Fox News projects that Republicans will see a net gain of about 65 seats in the House. In races from Florida to Virginia to Indiana to Texas, voters were sending a rebuke to the party in power by electing Republicans over Democratic incumbents. Seniority did not seem to matter. Longtime representatives were falling just as hard as freshmen, succumbing to campaigns — many of them backed by the Tea Party movement — that tied them to unpopular federal policies and proposals.

The GOP will not seize power in the Senate, with wins by Democratic Leader Harry Reid and a handful of others relegating Republicans to minority status for at least another two years. But they came close enough that neither party can be steamrolled by the other in the next Congress.

House Republican Leader John Boehner, now poised to succeed Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House, choked up as he addressed a jubilant crowd Tuesday night — he attributed his party’s success to a popular rejection of big government, big spending and big bailouts.

“It’s clear tonight who the winners really are, and that’s the American people,” Boehner said. “Across the country right now, we are witnessing a repudiation of Washington, a repudiation of big government and a repudiation of politicians who refuse to listen to the American people.”

Boehner vowed to fulfill his party’s “pledge” to cut spending and reduce the size of government, saying he’s willing to work with President Obama if he “respects the will of the people” and changes course. Obama called Boehner at midnight to congratulate him.

The GOP gains would exceed those made during the Republican wave of 1994 when the party picked up 54 House seats. Not since 1938 has the party made such monumental inroads. With 218 seats needed for a majority, Republicans so far have officially won 233, while Democrats have won 174.

Though unable to reach a majority in the Senate, Republicans have so far picked up six seats from Democrats and are holding down a number of others — giving little ground as they shoot for a stronger foothold in the upper chamber. In a symbolic victory, GOP Rep. Mark Kirk beat Alexi Giannoulias for Obama’s old Senate seat in Illinois after a hard-fought race. Conservative Pat Toomey narrowly defeated Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak, taking over for party-switching Sen. Arlen Specter. And three-term Sen. Russ Feingold was the latest incumbent Democrat to go down, losing his race for reelection in Wisconsin to Tea Party-backed businessman Ron Johnson.

“What we’re sensing tonight is a huge case of buyer’s remorse all across America,” Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell told supporters Tuesday night, describing the GOP gains as a rejection of the spending and “Washington takeovers” coming out of the federal government.

“PUSHING BACK AGAINST ARAB LAND GRABS” by Fern Sidman

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Arab demographics in Israel has been a hot button topic for the last 25 years, as the burgeoning Arab birth rate has resulted in a significant Arab majority in the Galilee region and a formidable Beduin presence in the Negev. As such, Israel finds itself in the midst of a national crisis of hitherto unknown proportions as Jewish farmers and landowners find themselves victimized by the illegal expropriation of their land through means of robbery, violence and intimidation by their Arab neighbors. Illegal grazing, planting and residential construction by Arabs have taken place over huge tracts of Jewish owned land that came with the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. It would appear that the government of Israel has been unwilling or unable to enforce laws that would prevent such actions.

Feeling the pinch of Arab land grabbers, some Jewish farmers have felt compelled to sell their land to Arabs and it has also been reported that private investors from the oil rich Arab Gulf states as Saudi Arabia are also purchasing sizable land parcels in Israel. This deepening morass has served as an impetus for many rabbis in Israel to issue edicts prohibiting Jews from selling land to Arabs, as was recently reported by Arutz Sheva. Increasing frustrations among Jewish residents of the Galilee have prompted some to begin taking concrete action to preserve Jewish land ownership. One such person in Joel Busner, executive director of the B’Ahavat Yisrael charitable organization and the founder of a new private venture called, “Buy A Piece of Israel”. I spoke with Mr. Busner at length about his views on the future of Jewish sovereignty in Israel.

FS: Can you tell our readership a little about your personal background, your involvement in activism and why you decided to launch “Buy a Piece of Israel” at this juncture?

JB: I was born and raised in Montreal and later lived in New York and South Florida before making aliya 12 years ago. I can’t explain why but I have always been involved in defending Jewish rights wherever I have resided and for as long as I can remember. Whether it be elderly Jews in bad neighborhoods or Jews in the Soviet Union it was always second nature to be involved.

When I moved to Israel I first resided in the Shomron and then for almost four years in Ra’anana. Frankly, I could have ended up anywhere in the land because I am loyal to all of it. While looking for a place to set up a youth farming project, I ended up in the lower Galilee with my young family. Once I was here I quickly learned that rights are different for Jews than they are for Arabs. Jews are required by law to have permits for everything and Arabs don’t. Arabs can build what they want and where they want in the Galilee very similarly to the situation in Judea and Samaria except that these Arabs are citizens of the State of Israel and are under the jurisdiction of the Israeli government. These Israeli-Arabs are no different than the Arabs of the liberated territories in terms of the tactics they employ when it comes to taking Jewish land. They watch what the Arabs in the territories do and then they try and implement the same strategies in the Galilee and in the Negev. They commit outright theft of land using violence and intimidation against Jewish farmers, etc.

While I greatly admire the hilltop youth and all the brave pioneers in Judea and Samaria I realized that very quietly, with very little media attention, the Arabs both from this region and their cousins from enemy states of Israel are using their prominence to take over. From early on, I saw the sham that is the olive harvest in the territories which is really an excuse for them to claim more and more land and now they are doing it here in pre-1967 Israel. I came to a conclusion that if we wait on law enforcement, the courts, and the politicians, then the outcome will inevitably be that in a few very short years the Arabs will claim sovereignty in the entire Galilee region. This area of the country was established by Jewish farming and Jewish toil and I decided to do all I can to bring it back into Jewish hands. As such, I am creating a program in which Jews worldwide who really care about this issue can invest in agricultural fields in the region. This would offer them an opportunity to own a piece of Israel, to create local employment, and to begin to reverse the trend that the Arabs have implemented with great success.

FS: Your literature says that Jewish agricultural land in the Galilee is being expropriated illegally by Arabs, leaving Jewish farmers without income. Why isn’t the Israel Land Authority or the JNF doing anything to prevent this?

JB: Throughout the country most groups our powerless. The Supreme Court is overwhelming leftist and does nothing to affirm Jewish rights. Some of the larger groups are in a way part of it as they hire Arabs and make more and more land concessions to Arabs. Our initiative is a private one. While we’re locating and managing private lands for Jewish owners, we also hope that others will replicate our efforts and do exactly the same thing. The more Jews that buy land translates into employment opportunities for other Jews in Israel and we increase our chances of retaining the land.

FS: You mention that Arab petro dollars are involved in purchasing Jewish owned land in the Galilee and the Negev. Are their any laws on the books in Israel that prohibit enemy states such as Saudi Arabia from buying land in the Jewish State?

JB: The lands that the Arab sheiks are investing in are private lands and not state owned lands. This is what we are purchasing and encouraging others to purchase. As far as private lands are concerned, there are no laws in Israel prohibiting these parties from purchasing, as tragic as it is.

FS: What concrete action would you take to protect Jews from the violence and robbery committed by their Arab neighbors in the Galilee and what would you do to encourage Jewish settlement in that area, thus ensuring a Jewish majority in that region?

JB: Because we are not in a government position we can’t force or compensate the Arabs to leave voluntarily at this point. However, we can set examples and get the ball rolling. We believe in not only purchasing land but in working it regularly which makes it difficult for Arabs to come and squat. By employing young and strong Jews we are supplying a much needed sense of security to local farmers and residents. The more land that is purchased and worked the more young Jews will be living here. I sincerely believe that once Jews again become convinced of the importance of Jewish manual labor there will be less dependence on
non-Jewish labor. It’s a chain.

FS: Your brochure mentions an article in which rabbis in the northern part of Israel are issuing decrees saying that it is prohibited to sell land to Arabs, based on Torah laws. Could you tell us why Jews feel compelled to sell their land to begin with?

JB: When politicians are ready to give up on the holy city of Jerusalem and are poised to make more and more territorial concessions to our sworn enemies the simple “average Joe” begins to see that there’s nothing wrong with taking more money even from enemies. In many cases these Jewish landowners and farmers are not offered any special government encouragement in helping to develop these important areas. The pride, the ‘Raison D’etre’ is vanishing.

FS: Your program calls on Jews around the world to purchase parts of large agricultural centers with the idea of retaining Jewish ownership and maintenance of the land. Can you tell us specifically how that will work in terms of reaping a dividend for the purchaser and how it will attract Jews to that area and who will be working the land?

JB: The workers will have to live in close proximity to their place of employment and the more jobs that are created means that more workers and their families will come to live in the region. Other businesses will start up to service the increase in population. As for purchasers, this is not a high tech start up. This is an alternative to giving charity. This is about getting really involved by owning land purchased debt free that will make a modest income but will be divided between the management of the land and the owners of the land. I would encourage Jews to think very seriously about this opportunity to purchase land and help to ensure the future of a Jewish Israel.

Partisan Teachers May Violate Federal Law

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Says it all about the liberal education system. Laws for all the rest of us, not for them…at least that’s how they see it.

In Prince George’s County in Maryland, a teacher uses the school computer to send an email to fellow teachers, encouraging them and others to work the polls in support Gov. Martin O’Malley.

In California, Sen. Barbara Boxer’s office sends a letter to “Government and Social Studies teachers throughout Los Angeles” asking them to recruit students “to earn extra credit or fulfill class volunteer hours” by becoming volunteers in her campaign.

In Cincinnati, three busloads of voting-age students are taken to the local board of elections so they can vote. Once there, they’re given sample ballots that contain only names on the Democratic ticket. And once they’re finished voting, they’re taken out for ice cream.

For the most part, these and other instances of teachers
and other public servants using government time and equipment for political purposes — and sometimes on behalf of a candidate — have been met with howls of protest, local indignation and occasionally a civil suit.

But according to Hans Von Spakovsky, a former member of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and now a Heritage Foundation specialist in voting issues, these small acts may actually be federal crimes.

Because virtually all public schools in the nation get federal funding
, Von Spakovsky says, teachers and other school employees are covered by the 1939 Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in partisan politics while working.

Whether anyone has actually been prosecuted is unknown. Von Spakovsky said he was unaware of any prosecutions, and the Office of Special Counsel, which prosecutes violations, did not return phone calls.

Similarly, no one is certain just how widespread these possible violations are in the election cycle. Kelly Ceballos of the League of Women Voters, which does extensive voter registration drives at high schools throughout the nation, said she was unaware of any other cases. “It is not something I am aware of,” she said.

But the ones that have surfaced have been troubling.

In California, Boxer’s letter to social studies teachers sparked a sharp rebuke from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, which demanded that schools notify teachers that they could face criminal penalties for involving students in partisan political campaigns during school hours.

The Boxer campaign apologized, acknowledged that the letter “was inappropriate” and said it would no longer conduct outreach to public high schools.

In Prince George’s County, Darren Presley, the school’s communication
director, said he was unaware of any disciplinary action against Catherine Kenny, the teacher behind the mass emailing to get “voters to push for O’Malley if we want to keep our retirement plans.” Presley said the school board is still looking into the matter.

In Cincinnati, the student bus ride sparked a lawsuit, and the school district quickly agreed to stop all conduct that smacked of partisanship and to “comply with all policies of the Cincinnati Public Schools and Ohio law.” But the lawsuit went further, asking that the conduct be “declared a violation of Ohio law.”

On Friday, the Hamilton County Board of Education suspended Virginia Rhodes, the principal of the high school that permitted the students to travel to the board of elections, for failure to provide oversight. It is unclear whether the two-week suspension is without pay. The teacher in the case, Dennis McFadden, has yet to face a disciplinary hearing.

Chris Finney, the attorney who filed suit against the school district, said he was certain that the practice of swaying high school kids to vote Democratic was widespread and “standard operating procedure.” He said he has requested records from the school and is considering filing a RICO civil action.

When asked whether it was a Hatch Act violation, he said he was unaware it applied.

“Amazing. What a brilliant idea,” he said.
