Fox News “Honor Killings in America”, A Review

Amina and Sarah Said

I had a chance to watch the Fox News “Honor Killings in America” last Friday.
It was good, but in a nut shell, it didn’t go far enough.

Now I don’t want to come off as a complete naysayer; from a main stream media standpoint, it was a giant leap in the correct direction, calling an “honor killing” what it is: an “honor killing”. Leave it to Fox News to be the only news media to consistently call it that.

I am aware of certain aspects of this situation that maybe some have not tumbled to yet. Why did Tissy get married? Why did Tissy continue to put up with a situation that was so unbearable? Yes, she was afraid, as are many victims of domestic violence. Once again though, if she had followed her Aunt Gail’s (Gail Gartrell) advice and researched Islam, she may have realized that marriages in Islam are not as they typically are here in the West. In Islam, the wife is the husband’s property. She must “toe the line”, so to speak, to avoid provoking her Muslim husband’s ire, possibly to the point of violence. In his eyes, she has no rights and her sole purpose in life is to please him, providing all that he would want and need. Her wants and needs are nonexistent. That is typically the life of a Muslim wife. I, for one, am getting a bit weary of Tissy’s shrugged shoulders and the “I don’t know” responses from her.

I have many thoughts about this situation. I find myself believing that Tissy either chose to or was compelled, by some misplaced loyalty, or fear, to tell Yaser everything, even when they were on the run. If she is not in part, criminally responsible for the girls deaths, she most certainly is guilty of putting the girls in harm’s way by bringing them back. She showed a complete lack of common sense and a complete lack of the nurturing nature that comes naturally to most mothers; the spirit of doing whatever is necessary to protect their young.

Instead, she chose to trust the words of her and the girls abuser of twenty years, and return. This is beyond comprehension. How does one get to the point where she is willing to go back to her abuser, back to the abuser of her girls, back to life of lies, false promises and violence; back to the almost certain death of her girls at the hand of this evil man?

I wish Fox News had asked her those tough questions. They most certainly knew or at least suspected this was the case. Yet they allowed Tissy to cry and carry on. They painted her the victim, equating her to the girls. I for one, don’t buy it. At best Tissy is guilty of the worst form of naivety; at worst, she is guilty of aiding and abetting the killer of her very own girls. For shame, Patricia, for shame!!

It is my hope that the Fox News show will bring this case back to the surface and with the expanded audience that Fox News enjoys, perhaps this will finally be the weight that tips the scale against Yaser. Maybe now, he can be caught and prosecuted. There is no doubt that he is getting aid, from his family almost certainly, and quite possibly from the extended Muslim community in the area in which he is currently hiding. Maybe this coverage can overcome that.

This case brings to the forefront the issues of “honor killing” and the religious and cultural mindset of those who do these hideous things. Are we quick enough to learn from this in time to stop it from becoming even more common place? Only time will tell.
