Mexico Promises to Block Border Wall Plan

OK, unless all of the people of Mexico have suddenly become U.S. citizens, this might be a bit hard to pull off.

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government, angered by a U.S. proposal to extend a wall along the border to keep out migrants, pledged Tuesday to block the plan and organize an international campaign against it. Facing a growing tide of anti-immigrant sentiment north of the border, the Mexican government has taken out ads urging Mexican workers to denounce rights violations in the United States. It also is hiring an American public relations firm to improve its image and counter growing U.S. concerns about immigration.
Mexican President Vicente Fox denounced the U.S. measures, passed by the House of Representatives on Friday, as “shameful” and his foreign secretary, Luis Ernesto Derbez, echoed his complaints on Tuesday.
“Mexico is not going to bear, it is not going to permit, and it will not allow a stupid thing like this wall,” Derbez said.
“What has to be done is to raise a storm of criticism, as is already happening, against this,” he said, promising to turn the international community against the plan.
Some stretches of the U.S.-Mexico border are already marked by fences, but in some heavily-trafficked sections walls have already been erected by the United States, often using 10-foot-high sections of military surplus steel. Those sections, which typically run several miles, can be found in southern Arizona and California.

Maybe I’m missing something, but how is enforcing the law and having people come to the country legally, a bad thing? Could it be the Mexican government sees a source of income drying up? Maybe the graft and corruption that is so prevalent down there would have to find other funding? Think about it.

Robledo, whose son and mother are U.S. citizens, predicted the measure “would unleash conflict within the United States” as small businesses fail for lack of workers.
He said many Mexicans felt betrayed by the anti-immigrant sentiment.

“We learned to believe in the United States. We have a binational life,” he said of Zacatecas, a state that has been sending migrants north for more than a century. “It isn’t just a feeling of rejection. It’s against what we see as part of our life, our culture, our territory.”

A “binational life”? OK, no problem. You can still have one. Just come to the country legally. A quite simple concept, I think.

Mexicans are outraged by the proposed measures, especially the extension of the border wall, which many liken to the Berlin Wall. Some are urging their government to fight it fiercely.

Now that make me mad. This wall is nothing at all like the Berlin wall. That wall separated two parts of the same country, not two different countries.
Look, if Mexico would take some responsibility here and improve things at home, people wouldn’t need to cross illegally. I welcome everyone who comes to this country legally. To the others I say “Stay Out”.

hmmm…but how do you propose to improve the lives of people when it is the northerly neighbour of the U.S. that adds to the oppression by not abiding by the NAFTA agreement they signed?

National Nitwit breaks the story of plans to augment the border wall.

National Nitwit - guaranteed at least 50% truthful.

I, personally, believe that the restrictions on becoming a US citizen should be stiffened and that all illegal immigrants should be shipped back on the boat they came in on. If one cant come here and abide by the law and go throught the proper channels to become a citizen, do you really think that they are going to abide by our laws when they are living here? We have a problem here and it needs to be addressed. While the process is being fixed the borders should be closed and NO ONE should be allowed to apply for citizenship until they are thoroughly checked out and can prove that they can work and be productive members of society. Just my opinion.

Ty, thanks for the post and welcome to the blog. I feel that free trade is absolutely necessary for the economies of all three of the North America countries. Now saying that, I also want secure boarders. Like it or not, I fear that we are way past the days when open boarders are possible. I feel that a fence with guards and detecting devices should be constructed along both the northern and southern boarders. I’m not trying to be a bad neighbor, but I don’t want terrorist entering my country and killing me unnecessarily. The people who want to come here can still come here, legally, through a boarder checkpoint. Other countries do it, so what is the big deal about us doing it? Thanks, by the way, for being such good northern neighbors. I know a lot of Canadians and I respect each and every one of them very much.

Bob (may I call you Bob?) I think national nitwit has a great idea. Dogs can be very good for security. Also, muslim’s don’t like them (because mohammed didn’t like them) , so the terrorist face two threats, instead of one.

Beth, I totally agree with you. Close the boarders, fence them in, guard them well and then get rid of everyone who is not here legally. Again, other countries expect it of their expats, why can’t we? There is no logical reason.

I also had another thought this morning. I truly believe that almost all, if not all, of the Mexican government is on the take from the drug runners. It’s not about families being separated, it’s about keeping their drug lord payoff money coming.
