“Unprecedented Lightning Strikes Bring Fires” by Michael G. Mickey

The Associated Press opened one of its stories last week on the gay marriages taking place in California in open defiance of Almighty God as follows:

Serenaded by a gay men’s chorus, showered with rose petals and toasted with champagne, hundreds of tearful same-sex couples got married across the state Tuesday in what some are calling California’s new Summer of Love.

Wearing everything from T-shirts to tuxedos and lavish gowns, they rushed down to county clerks’ offices to obtain marriage licenses and exchange vows on the first full day that gay marriage became legal in California by order of the state’s highest court. They were joined by jubilant crowds that came to witness the event.

So festive, isn’t it all? No fear of God, His wrath, or even embarrassment that long-held sexual moralities common to all long-standing societies are being cast aside. Eat, drink and be…gay!

Abomination or a good way to generate revenue?

On the topic of same-sex marriage, the following comments were made by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom recently in an article entitled “California sees business boom from gay weddings” (emphasis added mine):

“I think you’re going to see tens of thousands of couples and their families descend on San Francisco. People are looking at this as an opportunity to come and support their families, their partners and also the city’s economy.”

While I have been tempted to write a scathing rebuttal to all the same-sex jubilation taking place in the state of California reminiscent to the atmosphere in Sodom and Gomorrah preceding God’s wrath falling upon those wicked cities, I have restrained myself.

The one thing I did consider addressing was the notion, as expressed by Newsom and others in the state, that California was surely going to experience an economic boom as a result of the same-sex marriage fiasco. Pondering comments like Newsom’s I mused,”Do these people not realize that God could look their way, blink in disgust and wipe out all their profits?”

Lo and behold, I came upon a story in the news last night that grabbed my attention. It was an Associated Press article that opened as follows, emphasis added mine:

More than 840 wildfires sparked by an “unprecedented” lightning storm are burning across Northern California, alarming the governor and requiring the help of firefighters from Nevada and Oregon.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was told late Sunday evening that the state had 520 fires, and he found it “quite shocking” that by Monday morning the number had risen above 700.

In the latest update of the story, posted 1 hour and 40 minutes ago as I write this commentary, the headline is reading “Lightning sparks 800-plus fires in California”.

If this story hasn’t sparked a thought in your mind that God may be supernaturally ensuring that California’s expected economic windfall doesn’t occur as expected, there’s more to consider.

Del Walters, assistant regional chief of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, is quoted in the article as putting the number of fires raging in California at a walloping 842.

Not only that, I want you to notice the language used and the numbers quoted concerning this lightning event as relayed by Walters (emphasis added mine), “This is an unprecedented lightning storm in California, that it lasted as long as it did, 5,000 to 6,000 lightning strikes. We are finding fires all the time.”

While I’m fully aware that wildfires take place in California on a routine basis, this event seems to have been dramatic in both scope and intensity the way I’m reading it. Maybe this wasn’t as dramatic as I’m reading it to have been. I’m not sure but I am sure of this: God can make His presence known whenever He likes. Sometimes He can do so dramatically, particularly during times when He is being mocked. Perhaps this was one of those occasions – a bit of an eye-opener for those willing to see it. I leave that for each reader to decide on their own. Regardless, whether the ‘unprecedented’ lightning storm that caused all of the fires, costing California no telling how much money to combat, was a judgment against what is presently going on there or not, it should serve as a reminder that God, although His mercy is abundant, still plays a role in the affairs of mankind. Praise God that He always will, from my perspective!

The Homosexual Agenda and Prophecy

In Bible prophecy we’re told that in the days leading up to the return of Christ, it will be as it was in the days of Lot, when he lived in Sodom and Gomorrah. (Luke 17:28-30)

While conditions in Sodom caused just and righteous Lot to feel vexed often, he was eventually and supernaturally I might add delivered from that place by God. (2nd Peter 2:7-8) As soon as Lot was whisked away to safety, the wrath of God, in the form of fire from heaven, fell on the wicked and destroyed them all. (Luke 17:29)

Closing Thoughts

2nd Peter 2:9: The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

The Bible tells us, in Revelation 3:10, that an hour of temptation is going to come upon all the world, to try them that dwell on the earth. Prior to that, the godly, just like Lot, are going to be delivered out of both the temptation to come and the wrath of God via the Rapture of the Church.

In one of yesterday’s commentaries, I encouraged my readers to remain at their posts until relieved of duty. Even so, while there’s still work to be done here and we need to occupy until He comes, looking at the world around us should put a little spring in our step, in spite of how troubling much of what we’re seeing often is to us.

Why? Because when these things BEGIN to happen, we are to look up for our redemption draweth nigh! (Luke 21:28)

6-25-08 Update: In striking contrast to what happened in this instance, it is now being reported that, in all of 2007, there were 574 lightning-sparked fires. Compare this to 842 in just one day and we see why the fire that fell from heaven in this instance was unique and, indeed, unprecedented.

So, what did the people in the Philippines do to anger God? Or the people of China killed in the earthquake? Or the people killed by the tsunami in Thailand? I’d be very careful in assigning natural disasters to “God’s Will”.

  2. Beth says:

The truth is, we dont really know if those lightning strikes were God’s reply to the legalization of gay marriage. We do know that God can and will make His presence known however and whenever He chooses and that some will choose to overlook disaster and others will see it for what it is….As far as China, the Philippines, and Thailand……maybe those disasters were God’s response to the fact that those people groups have chosen to worhsip other gods and maybe those disasters happened to wake the people up to the fact that there is a God who rules the wind and the waves…….we have no idea WHY those things happen, but we do know that God is in control of everything and even though WE have no real idea why, He knows exactly why.

Now, this is where you make fun of me for believing in a God who would send disasters such as these. Then I will come back with the argument that God will do anything necessary to get people’s attention so that they will come to Him. And so on and so forth…….just trying to save us some time.

  3. Moses says:

The Californian lightening storm was not for legalizing Gay Marriage..it is for the US military backed by its Government of criminals using HAARP to cause genocidal Earthquakes in China!

  4. Starbix says:

Actually this is where I ask why faith in God is so important. If he offers such conclusive proof that he exists then wouldn’t that negate faith?

  5. Jaysus says:

And Beth proves she doesn’t have any neurons to rub together.

    There’s your proof of god.

  6. super4ord says:

I believe that you are correct in stating that the lightning strikes are from our Heavenly Father. If we will look and listen, he is speaking loudly. Consider some other things that have happened in recent history also.

The US virtually forced Israel to give up the land areas in the Gaza Strip forcing around 8500 people to leave their homes they had been in for 20 to 30 years. Within hours hurricane force winds struck New Orleans and a tenfold increase of people lost their homes, yes around 85,000.

The area where the earthquake and ensuing tsunami hit is one of the worst areas in the world for promoting child pornography. Around 300,000 people lost their lives.

  7. HackThis says:

Credulous is an awesome word. Describes so much about you.

  8. Starbix says:

Well it’s a good thing God killed all of the 300,000 child pornographers in Thailand. It’s just amazing that he was able to hit only smut peddlers and no innocent children or anything. Isn’t God great?

  9. Beth says:

Thank you so much for your very intelligent yet complimentary comment. Your mother must be so proud.

I totally agree with you on this. God can and will speak in whatever way He chooses. Sadly, when people don’t listen, He will use any measure to get their attention. Unfortunately, most people don’t take notice until it’s too late.

Here is what Webster says about the word Credulous
    Main Entry: cred·u·lous
    Pronunciation: \ˈkre-jə-ləs\
    Function: adjective
    Etymology: Latin credulus, from credere
    Date: 1576
1 : ready to believe especially on slight or uncertain evidence
    2 : proceeding from credulity

Slight evidence???? I think that the Bible is less than slight evidence. Actually, we have lots of evidence in the form of the Holy Spirit that lives inside each believer……..I think credulous may just be a better description of you.

I agree that the tsunami killed many innocent people. I do believe that God allows these types of tragedies (and yes, sometimes sends them Himself) in order to send a wake-up call to people who refuse to believe in Him. You know that the Bible says that it is His will that none should perish (in hell). He has given each of us a certain amount of time to come to Him and if we wait, it is to our own detriment. We may not understand His ways, if we could we would BE Gods, but His plan is that we all believe and if He has to get our attention through extreme ways, He can and He will do it. He doesnt say that we are to understand why or what He does, we just have to trust Him.

For all the people who refuse to accept God’s laws. Let’s just say my own DOG KNOWS BETTER!

It is a sad day on earth when ANIMALS PROVE to be smarter than humans: any animal will tell you that same sex bonding of a sexual nature is NOT CORRECT. Let alone it is OBVIOUSLY anatomically incorrect.

    Even ANIMALS know this.

“Ask the animals and THEY will TEACH you…”
    -Job: 12: 7-8

FACT: Animals do NOT form same sex sexual bonds, PERIOD!

  11. HackThis says:

    ‘Slight evidence????’

No, its not even that. There is no outside reference from non-believers that proves any “miraculous” event in the bible. The bible became a lie as soon as it was edited by the catholic church. It was edited to make people believe that if they didn’t pay their priests they would go to hell. I bet they laughed their heads off when Martin Luther created the protestant church. It killed the whole point.

‘we have lots of evidence in the form of the Holy Spirit that lives inside each believer’

THat is an illusion created by being accepted into a christian community. I know because I’ve been there.

‘FACT: Animals do NOT form same sex sexual bonds, PERIOD!’
    Citation Needed

‘The presence of same-sex sexual behavior was not scientifically observed on a large scale until recent times. Homosexual behaviour does occur in the animal kingdom outside humans, especially in social species, particularly in marine birds and mammals, monkeys, and the great apes. Homosexual behaviour has been observed among 1,500 species, and in 500 of those it is well documented.[36]’ –wikipedia

MoniQue also doesn’t have a brain cell to her name! And Christianity isn’t supposed to be detrimental…

  13. super4ord says:

Sometimes our Heavenly Father takes the lives of the innocent to pay for the sins of the guilty. You may think this is a harsh judgemental attribute, of our Heavenly Father, but sin must be paid for. The wages of sin are death. If you really look at this though, it shows the mercy of our Heavenly Father. He has given the guilty another chance to repent and turn to him. The innocent were already redeemed by the atoning sacrifice of our Savior and their absolute faithfulness in him. It does say in scripture that all who believe on him shall be saved.

If you are in doubt of what sin is, it is transgression of the law. Just look in the Bible. This is our Heavenly Father’s law. There are 613 laws in scripture including the 10 Commandments. 365 positive & 248 negative, but only about 130 apply to any one person. Our Heavenly Father loves each and every one of us more than we can even possibly know. We are his creation. We live by the words that proceed out of his mouth. He gives us chance after chance to turn to him and repent, that he might be merciful to us, but he must be true to his word. If he said it, then it is true forever! He nurtures & corrects us as a parent does to their children. After all we are all his children.

He listens to the cries and pleas of the persecuted ones that cry out to him and will say enough is enough! The wrong doing ends. It is not good to be on the wrong side. I believe we are living the end of days. Our Heavenly Father is not constrained by time as we are. He created it, but did say there would be and end to time. A day is as a thousand years to him. Some day all will be revealed and we will have account for all that we have done, good and bad.

To the moderator concerning the last post I submitted, which is not yet displayed. If it is a duplicate of what I have posted, then why do I not yet see it?

  15. super4ord says:

I would agree with you that many people in the past have had an agenda when translating the scriptures or by twisting them for their benefit to control people. If you just think about the most common version of the Bible in the US, the “King James version”. The translation and transliteration of the original text was probably from Hebrew to Aramaic to Greek to Latin to German to English. WOW! how many misinterpretations and agendas might be involved here? Who authorized the “Authorized King James Version”? There have been many pagan customs and rituals inculturated into “Christianity” as we know it today, just to appeal to the masses of people and also used to control them.

I weep at the many things that most take for granted that is scripturally correct, but instead are the laws and doctrine of men, not our Heavenly Fathers laws. An example is the “Rapture”. I have yet to find it in scripture.

But, please don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah. There was great sexual immorality there. Our Heavenly Father destroyed them because there were not even 10 righteous men in those cities. He removed the righteous before he rained the fire and brimstone down upon them.

  17. Steve says:

Although the word “rapture” does not appear in the Bible, there is significant evidence that it will happen.
    GotQuestions? has this to say:

“Question: “What is the Rapture of the church?”

Answer: The word “rapture” does not occur in the Bible. The concept of the Rapture, though, is clearly taught in Scripture. The Rapture of the church is the event in which God removes all believers from the earth in order to make way for His righteous judgment to be poured out on the earth during the Tribulation period. The Rapture is described primarily in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and 1 Corinthians 15:50-54. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 describes the Rapture as God resurrecting all believers who have died, giving them glorified bodies, and then departing the earth with those believers who were still alive, who have also been given glorified bodies. “For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

1 Corinthians 15:50-54 focuses on the instantaneous nature of the Rapture and on the glorified bodies we will receive. “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed – in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). The Rapture is the glorious event we should all be longing for. We will finally be free from sin. We will be in God’s presence forever. There is far too much debate over the meaning and scope of the Rapture. This is not God’s intent. Rather, in regards to the Rapture, God wants us to “encourage each other with these words.””

  18. HackThis says:

If I was christian and actually believed a word of the bible I would think “Why doesn’t god just kill everyone? The believers will go to heaven and the others to hell”

I smell the hands of the cathol.ic church in these verses.

Actually, do you ever question the bible? Do you ever think that parts of it may have been lost in translation, missinterpreted or just downright made up?

  19. super4ord says:

I would have to disagree with you on part of the analogy. It is referring to the blowing of the last trumpet, or the great shofar, heralding the second coming of our Messiah and the establishment of his eternal reign. It does expand on this in Matthew chap 24 starting with verse 29:

29 “But immediately after the tribulation of those days THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, AND THE STARS WILL FALL from the sky and the powers of the heavens will be shaken, 30 and then the of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory. 31 ” And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

Taken directly from scripture as it is stated, this is clearly after the tribulation.

I would have to agree with the rest though. Expanding a little more on the passages in 1Corinthians Chap 15.

35 But some will say, “How are the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come?”
39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, and another of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fish.
40 There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another.
    42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body;
    43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;
44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

The capitalized words in the preceding text were that way in the Bible I was looking in. I did not capitalize any of them for emphasis, just retyped exactly the same way it appeared in the text.

I would be very careful in the words and statements you make, since we will have to account for all in the great judgement. There may be errors in scripture due to mans agenda and misinterpretation, but again it is our Heavenly Fathers law and our guide for living according to His will.

I would refer to 2Peter Chap 1 starting with verse 16.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”-
18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,
21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Don’t just trust what anyone says, question and test with scripture. Read for yourself. Scripture will prove itself.

  20. I had a feeling the fires in Northern California were due to the legalization of gay marriage in the state of California.
