Evolution Fails to Prove Itself…Again

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

“We know nothing about how the human line actually emerged from apes.”

“The mythical evolutionary tree of life with man’s ascent from ape is looking more like a patch of thousands of blades of grass with the passing of each generation. Sapiens ends up all by himself-an evolutionary orphan-almost as though he just appeared in the fossil record fully formed-as though he were created and placed here. Imagine that.”

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Germany: Terror Plot Targeted U.S. Base

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

More Islamic terror plots. This time in Germany.
It appears the Germans were on top of it and have arrested three people.

BERLIN (AP) - Three suspected Islamic militants were arrested for allegedly plotting “imminent” and “massive” attacks on the Ramstein Air Base, a major U.S. and NATO military hub, and Frankfurt’s busy international airport, German authorities said Wednesday.

German federal prosecutor Monika Harms said the three had trained at terror camps in Pakistan and procured some 1,500 pounds of hydrogen peroxide for making explosives. And a top legislator said the group could have struck “in a few days,” noting a “sensitive period” that includes the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Officials said the hydrogen peroxide, stored in a hideout, could have been mixed with other additives to produce a bomb with the explosive power of 1,200 pounds of TNT.

“This would have enabled them to make bombs with more explosive power than the ones used in the London and Madrid (transit) bombings,” Joerg Ziercke, the head of Germany’s Federal Crime Office, said at a joint press conference with Harms.

The three suspects—two Germans and a Turk—first came to the attention of authorities because they had been observing a U.S. military facility at the end of 2006, officials said. All three had undergone training at camps in Pakistan run by the Islamic Jihad Union, and had formed a German cell of the group.

The Islamic Jihad Union was described as a Sunni Muslim group based in Central Asia that was an offshoot of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an extremist group with origins in that country.

“There was an imminent threat,” German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung told ARD broadcaster.

The three suspects were brought before judges in a closed proceeding at Germany’s Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe after being flown in by helicopter, court officials said.

Prosecutors in Karlsruhe said the arrests took place Tuesday afternoon, and that police had also carried out searches across the country. The German reports came a day after Denmark authorities said they had thwarted a bomb plot when authorities rounded up eight alleged Islamic militants believed to have links to al-Qaida.

Wolfgang Bosbach, a top legislator for German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats, said that “the suspects had been under observation by security officials for a long time”

“Consequently, we know without any doubt that they were planning attacks that would have had considerable consequences,” he told N24 television, adding that the three had acquired chemicals for the plot.

Bosbach said an attack could have occurred “in a few days” and pointed out the Sept. 11 anniversary, as well as parliamentary deliberations in the next few weeks over whether to extend troop mandates in Afghanistan.

“We are in a highly sensitive period,” he said.

More Toys From China Recalled

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Has anyone else noticed that recalls on products from China are now a daily occurrence? One of our local radio stations even has a morning news spot called “The Daily China Recall List”. When are we going to stop buying products from these people?

Mattel Inc. on Tuesday announced its third major recall of Chinese-made toys in little more than a month, including 675,000 Barbie doll accessories, because of excessive amounts of lead-tainted paint.

The recall is the latest blow to the world’s largest toy maker as the critical holiday shopping season approaches. The action, whose details were negotiated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, involves a total of more than 800,000 units, Mattel said in a statement.

The recall covers 90,000 units of Mattel’s GeoTrax locomotive line and 8,900 Big Big World 6-in-1 Bongo Band toys, both from the company’s Fisher-Price brand. The Big Big World products were sold nationwide from July through August of this year, while the GeoTrax toys were sold from September 2006 through August of this year.

The recalled Barbie accessories were sold between October 2006 and August of this year. No Barbie dolls were included in the action.

Mattel’s last recall, announced on Aug. 14, covered about 19 million toys worldwide. They included Chinese-made toys that either had excessive amounts of lead paint or had small magnets that could easily be swallowed by children.

Several Countries Trying to Hack Into US Military Computers

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007
Several nations and groups are trying to break into the US military’s computer system, the Pentagon said Tuesday after reports China’s military had successfully hacked into the network.
The Chinese military’s cyber-attack was carried out in June following months of efforts, the London-based Financial Times reported Tuesday, citing unnamed current and former US officials.

Officials had told the paper the attack was by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and that it led to the shutdown of a computer system serving the office of Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Patrick Ryder, a US Defense Department spokesman, declined to comment on the reported Chinese attack but said the Pentagon “aggressively monitors its networks for intrusions and has appropriate procedures to address” them.

“We know that a number of nations and groups are actively developing these capabilities,” he told AFP.

“We have seen attempts by a variety of state and non-state sponsored organizations to gain unauthorized access to, or otherwise degrade, DoD (Department of Defense) information systems,” he said without identifying them.

Palestinian Rocket Fire May Cause Israel to Act in Gaza

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convened his top ministers on Wednesday to discuss Israel’s response to the latest wave of Palestinian rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, as public pressure for retaliation grew after an attack that nearly hit a crowded nursery school.
Ahead of Wednesday’s meeting of the Security Cabinet, several ministers said they favored cutting off electricity, water or fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip to put pressure on the area’s Hamas rulers to halt the rocket fire. Others were pressing for broad or pinpointed military operations to hunt the militants.

Islamic Jihad, a radical Palestinian militant group, has carried out this week’s rocket fire. But Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for ensuring quiet since it now controls Gaza.

The meeting came as Tony Blair was in Jerusalem in his new role as representative of the “Quartet” of Middle East mediators. The former British prime minister scheduled a series of meetings Wednesday, including talks with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak. Blair is expected to be in the area for about 10 days before reporting at the end of the month to the Quartet, which is comprised of the U.S., Russia, the European Union and the U.N.

Pressure has been mounting on the Israeli government to respond to the persistent rocket fire from Gaza, especially after Monday’s attack next to a day-care center in the southern town of Sderot. No one was injured, but the explosion caused widespread panic.

“The government should declare a state of emergency,” Sderot resident Alon Davidi told Army Radio Wednesday. “Gazans shouldn’t be able to have normal lives until the last child in Sderot can walk peacefully and calmly in the street.”

Later Wednesday, Sderot residents planned a large demonstration near Olmert’s office in Jerusalem to demand the government stop the rockets.

A number of top officials, including Barak, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Vice Premier Haim Ramon, have endorsed limiting or cutting electricity, water or fuel supplies to Gaza. The impoverished strip relies almost entirely on Israel for the resources.

At least two other ministers were pressing for military action.

“The answer has to be military … I think we need to decide on a few operations against the rocket launchers,” Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit told Israel Radio Wednesday. “I don’t rule out an incursion … and taking the area for two or three weeks.”

Sheetrit said he opposed cutting off the supply of water, electricity or fuel, saying he believes it would violate international law.

Israel’s Defense Ministry declared a state of emergency in Israeli communities near Gaza on Tuesday, a step sometimes taken before a military operation.
