Democrat Says Declining Casualties in Iraq is Not Progress

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Okaaaay…then exactly what is “progress”, hummmm, Mr./Ms. Democrat?? Do tell us.

(CNSNews.com) – New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a Democratic presidential candidate, said Sunday that the decline in U.S. casualties in Iraq — which has accompanied the increase in U.S. troops in that country — is not a sign of progress.

“Progress shouldn’t be measured by casualty counts, body counts,” Richardson told host George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week.”

Stephanopoulos pressed Richardson on the issue, confronting him with points made earlier in the program by Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a Republican presidential candidate, who has been a leading defender of the troop-surge policy that President Bush has pursued since the beginning of the year.

“But governor,” said Stephanopoulos, “do you concede that we have seen real progress in bringing down the violence? We do see refugees returning home, and you heard Senator McCain say that we are beginning to see reconciliation at the local level even though they are still in transition at the federal level.”

“Violence … ebbs and flows, George,” answered Richardson. “I believe that no American death is worthy of saying body counts have gone down. Forty died in October. Sixty-five percent of the Iraqi people in a recent poll say it is okay to shoot at an American soldier.

“Until we withdraw all our forces, the political reconciliation that we all want — a multinational peacekeeping force, a donor conference, the three groups in Iraq, the Sunni, the Shia, and the Kurds coming together, a unification of the country — is not going to happen.”

French “Youths” (Muslims) Riot for Second Night

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

The spineless press continues to refuse to identify the rioting “youth” as Muslims. They refuse to see the significance of this. It’s not Christian “youths”. It’s not Hindu “youths”. It’s not Buddhist “youths”. It’s Muslim “youths”. Just wanted to set the record straight on this.

VILLIERS-LE-BEL, France — Rampaging youths rioted overnight in Paris’ suburbs, hurling Molotov cocktails and setting fire to dozens of cars. At least 77 officers were injured and officers were fired at, a senior police union official said Tuesday.

The violence was more intense that during three weeks of rioting in 2005, said the official, Patrice Ribeiro. Police were shot at and are facing “genuine urban guerillas with conventional weapons and hunting weapons.”

Some officers were hit by shotgun pellets, Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said. She said there were six serious injuries, “people who notably were struck in the face and close to the eyes.”

The trigger for the rioting was the deaths of two teens killed in a crash with a police patrol car on Sunday in Villiers-le-Bel, a town of public housing blocks home to a mix of Arab, black and white residents in Paris’ northern suburbs.

Residents claimed that officers left the crash scene without helping the teens, whose motorbike collided with the car. Officials cast doubt on the claim, but the internal police oversight agency was investigating.

Youths first rioted that night and again overnight Monday to Tuesday, when the violence apparently got worse.

Youths set police barricades on fire and threw stones and Molotov cocktails at officers, who retaliated with tear gas and rubber bullets. In Villiers-le-Bel and surrounding areas, youths set fire to 36 vehicles, the area’s prefecture said.

Youths were seen firing buckshot at police and reporters. A police union official said a round from a hunting rifle pierced the body armor of one officer who suffered a serious shoulder wound.

Among the buildings targeted by the youths was a library, which was set afire.

In Sunday’s violence, eight people were arrested and 20 police officers were injured — including the town’s police chief, who was beaten in the face when he tried to negotiate with the rioters, police said. One firefighter also was injured.

The unrest in 2005 was prompted by the deaths of two teens electrocuted in a power substation while hiding from police in a suburb northeast of Paris.

The Mohammed Teddy Bear Blasphemy!

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Michelle Malkin says this best:

If it isn’t cartoons or Western fast-food joints or Valentine’s day cards or beauty pageants or books or speeches or Playboy magazines or soccer balls that have the Religion of Perpetual Outrage up in arms, it’s something else. It’s always something. You can never assuage the unassuageable. You can never anticipate what pretext they’ll use next to claim “insult” and demand submission. Today, it’s teddy bears. Yes, teddy bears. The Times of London reports:

A British primary school teacher arrested in Sudan faces up to 40 lashes for blasphemy after letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was arrested at her lodgings at Khartoum’s Unity High School yesterday, accused of insulting the Prophet of Islam.

Her colleagues said that they feared for her safety after reports that groups of young men had gathered outside the Khartoum police station where she was taken and were shouting death threats…

…Teachers at the school, in central Khartoum only a mile from the River Nile, said that Ms Gibbons had made an innocent mistake by letting her pupils choose their favourite name for the toy as part of a school project.

Robert Boulos, the Unity director, said that Mrs Gibbons was following a British National Curriculum course designed to teach young pupils about animals and their habitats. This year’s animal was the bear.

In September, she asked a girl to bring in her teddy bear to help the Year 2 class to focus and then asked the class to name the toy.

“They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad. Then she explained what it meant to vote and asked them to choose the name,” Mr Boulos said.

Twenty out of the 23 children chose Muhammad. Each child was allowed to take the bear home at weekends and asked to write a diary about what they did with the toy. Each entry was collected in a book with a picture of the bear on the cover, next to the message “My name is Muhammad”.

Mr Boulos said that the bear itself was not marked or labelled with the name in any way, he added, saying Sudanese police had now seized the book and had asked to interview the 7-year-old girl.

So: Naming teddy bears after Mohammed–which will earn an infidel 40 lashes for blasphemy–is haram.

But naming your child after Mohammed–now one of the most popular names for boys in England and Wales–is halal.

Welcome to the intricacies of sharia.

More Churches Preaching Environmental Gospel

Monday, November 26th, 2007

These churches need to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ not the gospel of Al Gore. There is only one way to keep from warming and that is Jesus Christ.

In a growing number of churches, salvation means saving the Earth.
A movement called Interfaith Power and Light offers ministers sermon tips on how to convert churchgoers into environmental activists. One program encourages people to switch to energy
efficient light bulbs on each night they light a holiday candle for Advent or Hanukkah.

Virginia’s chapter has focused on developing a three-hour training program for congregations that asks members to calculate their carbon footprints and pledge a 10 percent reduction.

A movement called “Cool Congregations” is afoot in Tennessee, where members of different congregations meet to discuss the connection between faith and environment and then spread the green gospel to their houses of worship.

Bush Pushing for Palestinian State

Monday, November 26th, 2007

I wonder why President Bush cannot see that creating a Palestinian state will not bring peace to Israel.

“I remain personally committed to implementing my vision of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security,” US President George W. Bush pledged in a statement released by the White House Sunday, ahead of the Annapolis conference.

Bush said the conference would signal international support for the Israelis’ and Palestinians’ intention to commence negotiations on the establishment of a Palestinian state and the realization of peace between the two peoples.

“The broad attendance at this conference by regional states and other key international participants demonstrates the international resolve to seize this important opportunity to advance freedom and peace in the Middle East,” continued the statement.

“When is a Trafficking Victim Worthy of Rescue and Who Gets to Decide?” by Dr. Phyllis Chesler

Monday, November 26th, 2007

According to the Department of Justice (DOJ) a prostitute or a victim of trafficking is entitled to justice but only if she has been “forced, tricked, or coerced” into doing what the DOJ calls “sex work”—and if she can prove it. Today, according to U.S. governmental Trafficking Prosecutors, a rescue-worthy prostitute is someone who has been forcibly “trafficked” or “tricked” into sexual slavery. If she is from a Third World country, she commands more DOJ sympathy that does an American child who has escaped from an incestuous and dangerously abusive family in Iowa or Minnesota and who has ended up in the arms of a violent pimp or brothel-owner in another American state. In addition, the DOJ does not seem to count minor children who are used in “commercial sex acts” as trafficking victims because, by definition, they have not necessarily been “coerced” or “duped.”

In September and October of 2007, The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) sent careful letters to the Attorney Generals’ Office, one of which you may read HERE, which noted DOJ failures, asked critical questions, and called upon it to strengthen law enforcement in this area. (Full disclosure: I am one of the signatories of these letters as are The National Organization for Women, Equality Now, and feminists Melissa Farley, Diana Russell, and Gloria Steinem— but so are representatives of the National Association of Evangelicals, The National Congress of Black Women, American Values, the Southern Baptist Convention, the Salvation Army, etc).

In short, there is agreement about this across the political spectrum.

In April of 2007, five members of Congress (the Honorable Carolyn S. Maloney, Frank Wolf, John Lewis, Thelma Drake, and Hank Johnson), sent a letter to the DOJ which also criticized the DOJ’s failures in the “war against trafficking” and asked the DOJ to respond in a timely fashion to each of the issues detailed by CATW, a group which is led by two amazing lawyers Dorchen Leithold and Norma Ramos.

Why is the DOJ failing its historic task? Why is the public not pressing it on this matter? How does an improper emphasis on proving that “force” was involved lead to prosecutorial failure and to the continued abandonment of trafficking victims and sexual slaves?

Those who once argued for the legalization of “sex work” claimed that it was a “victimless” crime. Today, in an era in which the sale and kidnapping of children into sexual slavery has been better documented, these legalizers oppose abolitionists in a new way: They claim that only those who can testify to and prove that force was involved may claim victim-status. All others, including those who are too afraid or unable to testify, are on their own.

Once, “whores” and “sex-workers” were called prostitutes. They were viewed as evil and mentally ill man-haters who took revenge against men by “hooking” or addicting men (!) to sex for money. Prostitutes were not viewed as victims but as profiteering gold-diggers who knew what they were doing and deserved whatever they got. People also thought that women “turned tricks” in order to feed pre-existing drug and alcohol habits of their own; that prostitutes became wealthy and either retired at thirty for life—or attended medical school with their ill-gotten gains.

Alright, for the sake of argument I will admit, (but unwillingly), that 1%-5% of all prostitutes may prosper both economically and psychologically. I don’t really believe this but I will concede it. Perhaps there are literally a handful of real-life “Pretty Women” in every generation (Five? Twenty five? One hundred? Out of millions) who marry millionaire Johns who have fallen in love with them. However, these are the exceptions to the rule.

This pretty picture is not true for 95%-99% of all prostitutes. Today, most prostituted girls and women and the victims of trafficking are, at best, blue-collar workers whose average age is fifteen and who suffer and die too soon from the diseases that AIDS-infected Johns inflict upon them and from the drugs and alcohol which dull the consequences of their toxic, so-called “work.” Parents sell their five year-old daughters into sexual slavery; pimps seduce impoverished young adult women with promises of legitimate work, hide their passports, then break them with beatings and rape—or they kidnap them right off the street. Prostituted women are also hunted as “prey” by serial killers. Their mutilated corpses are rarely reclaimed by family or friends.

Studies document that prostitutes and the victims of trafficking are routinely raped, gang-raped, beaten, tortured, and “stiffed,” and are, therefore, more gravely afflicted with the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress (anxiety, insomnia, flashbacks, paranoia, depression, suicidal ideation) than are combat veterans. Prostitutes are “disposable” people whom society still shuns and blames.

Human sexual slavery is a multi-billion dollar a year business. It is right up there with guns and narcotics. Radical feminists and Christian conservatives have spent years drafting legislation with “teeth.” Some survivors of prostitution who have miraculously managed to escape the clutches of pimps and kidnappers have become abolitionist-rescuers of others who also wish to escape. Their work is sometimes federally funded and often has a religious bent. For example, Wellspring, in Omaha, Nebraska, is a Salvation Army ministry; Dignity is a Catholic Charities ministry, based in Arizona. Survivors also direct Breaking Free, SAGE, Veronica’s Voice, and GEMS. (Press HERE to read more about these heroes).

According to trafficking legislation expert, University of Rhode Island Professor, Dr. Donna Hughes, DOJ officials fail to credit or utilize such survivor-rescuers. Worse. They also continue to distinguish between “voluntary” and “involuntary” prostitution or they propagate the myths that I have outlined above. This means that they find many ways to justify not doing their work.

Some law enforcement personnel have been effective in prosecuting both domestic and international traffickers. They have been maligned and sometimes punished. Stay tuned for more about this.

I would like to acknowledge the extraordinary work of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, the ongoing work of Professor Donna Hughes, and the rescue work of survivors in this area which bears more than a slight resemblance to the African slave trade.

“Smashing The Golden Compass” by Mike Mickey

Monday, November 26th, 2007

THE GOLDEN COMPASS, a new movie targeted at children, will be released December 7, 2007.

This movie is based on a the first book of a trilogy by atheist Philip Pullman. In the final book a boy and girl kill God so they can do as they please. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that “My books are about killing God.”

The movie is a watered-down version of the first book and is designed to be very attractive in the hope unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie and that the children will want the books for Christmas.

The movie has a well known cast, including Nicole Kidman, Kevin Bacon, and Sam Elliott. It will probably be advertised extensively, so it is crucial that we get the word out to warn parents to avoid this movie.

This is not the stuff of urban legend but THE TRUTH as revealed by Snopes.com, which specializes in sorting truth from fiction when rumors begin being spread that seem to be larger than life or potentially fictitious. See what Snopes has to say about “The Golden Compass” by clicking HERE.

This is where the Church can be salt and light in a world that has forgotten its God! Let’s spread the word about this spiritual poison that targets our children and SMASH THE GOLDEN COMPASS!

Pray for the Mideast Peace Conference

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Success of this conference will be measured differently for me than what you will find in the mainstream media. For me, success is stopping terrorism against Israel without Israel giving any more territorial concessions. If you were to take a moment to study the time line of events, you would see that time after time, Israel has made concession after concession, but the pali terrorist have refused to live up to even one of their promises.
I hope and pray that God will protect His people, the Jews and their nation Israel, from any more danger.

WASHINGTON — President Bush will lend his clout Monday to help broker an elusive agreement between Israel and the Palestinians on the contours of long-stalled peace talks the two sides expect to relaunch this week at a high-stakes international conference.

Resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been a priority of a succession of U.S. presidents, and late in his two-term tenure, Bush has made that long-coveted diplomatic victory his goal, too.

Bush invited the Israeli and Palestinian leaders to separate meetings at the White House on Monday to prepare for the centerpiece of his Mideast gathering — an all-day session Tuesday in Annapolis, Md.

“I remain personally committed to implementing my vision of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security,” Bush said Sunday in a statement on the international gathering that begins Monday night with a dinner.

“The Israelis and Palestinians have waited a long time for this vision to be realized, and I call upon all those gathering in Annapolis this week to redouble their efforts to turn dreams of peace into reality,” he said.

Bush will open the Annapolis conference with a speech. He’ll make clear that Mideast peace is a top priority for the rest of his time in office through January 2009, but he is not expected to advance any of his own ideas on how to achieve that, Bush national security adviser Stephen Hadley said Sunday.

“It is now time for the parties to get into this process by way of negotiation,” Hadley told reporters. “And I don’t think the president will conclude that the time is right to start offering ideas on outcomes on specific issues. … This is not a negotiation session. It is to launch a negotiation, and for the parties then to take a lead.”

Hadley also said the joint statement was not as important as it had initially appeared. The two sides had taken the unexpected step of agreeing to negotiations, so the document was no longer a vehicle necessary to bring them to that point, he said.

“If we get something, if they can agree on some things as an input to the negotiations, that would be fine,” Hadley said. “But I think it is really no longer on the critical path to a successful conference.”

The run-up to the meeting has been fraught with disputes, skepticism and suspicion about the opposing parties’ good faith. And expectations remain low.

But Bush has been buoyed by Arab endorsement of the meeting and the possibilities for broader peacemaking. He will be asked to use his presidential heft to promote a joint blueprint for talks that are to follow, Israeli and Palestinian officials said Sunday.

Clinching a joint statement of objectives from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert might prove to be an impossibly tall order because of the charged issues that divide the two sides. On more than one occasion, negotiations have splintered over the key questions of Palestinian statehood — final borders, sovereignty over disputed Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees who lost homes in Israel following its 1948 creation.

Pro-Life Scientist Urges Federal Funding of New Stem Cell Technique

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Last week, scientist announced last week, that they have been able to make skin cells into stem cells. This is huge news.
In a nutshell, what it means is that we no longer need embryonic stem cells, typically harvested from aborted babies.

Two teams of scientists have reported that they have succeeded in directly reprogramming human skin cells to turn into embryonic-like stem cells. The groups have produced what are called “iPS” cells (induced Pluripotent Stem cells) by adding four genetic factors to a human skin cell. No embryos are created or destroyed, and no cloning or eggs are needed in the process.

The breakthrough is welcome news to people like Dr. David Prentice, a senior fellow for life sciences at the Family Research Council, and prominent critic of embryo-destructive research. “It looks like very soon they’ll be able to get around the use of viruses … and just use some simple chemicals probably to do that reprogramming with the genes,” he explains. “So that’s really not a great hurdle.”

“They ought to just drop this whole push to destroy more embryos or to clone,” he insists. “We’re already hearing that some members of Congress who might have been on the fence and were sort of biting the bullet” in the embryonic stem cell debate will decide they do not need to support that bill that President Bush vetoed.

The Islamic Nation of France Burns Again

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Once again, our spineless press refuses to make note of who these rioting youth are. Let me set the story straight then. They are Islamic. Muslims. The cause of the riot? Two Muslim “youth” stole a motorcycle and without helmets, were involved in a traffic accident with a police car. Both “youths” were killed.
When is Europe, especially France, going to wake up to the enemy in their midst?

PARIS – A French mayor called for calm on Monday in his Paris suburb, where dozens of youths clashed with police overnight after two teenagers were killed in a crash with a police car.

The violence brought back memories of the 2005 riots in Paris suburbs, when thousands of cars were torched after two teenagers were electrocuted and killed in an electricity sub-station after apparently fleeing police.

“I’m appealing to all inhabitants, and notably young people so that we can get back to calm in our town,” said Didier Vaillant, mayor of the town of Villiers-le-Bel north of Paris.

“Since yesterday, we’re in mourning. Last night, the town has suffered,” he told i-tele television.

Around 20 police officers and firemen were injured in the overnight clashes, officials said. The town’s police station caught fire and that of the neighbouring town, Arnouville-les-Gonesse, was ransacked.

Police sources said the two youngsters, who were 15 and 16 years old, were riding on a stolen motorcycle without helmets when the accident happened on Sunday.

“It was not a chase but apparently a traffic accident,” a police source said.

Arabs: “We’ll Attend Peace Meeting, Don’t Ask Us to Touch the Jews!”

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Well isn’t that nice? The terrorist Arabs have agreed to attend the peace conference with Israel, but by all means, don’t expect them to even shake hands with the Jews.
Yeah, this is going to be a great and productive peace conference…NOT!!

CAIRO, Egypt – Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations grudgingly agreed Friday to attend next week’s U.S.-sponsored Mideast peace conference, despite failing to get any guarantee of Israeli concessions.

In a sign of the skepticism, even among close U.S. allies, the Saudi foreign minister cautioned that there would be no public handshakes with Israeli officials at the gathering Tuesday in Annapolis, Md

Seattle Schools’ Thanksgiving ‘Myths’ Stir Controversy

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

The liberals always feel the need to feel bad and demonize people even when the “victims” themselves choose not to be “victims”.

Seattle public schools want a side of political correctness served on your Thanksgiving table.

Washington state’s largest school district sent letters to teachers and other employees suggesting Thanksgiving should be “a time of mourning” for its Native American students.

Click here to view the report from FOX News’ Dan Springer.

The memo, from Caprice Hollins, the district’s director of Equity, Race & Learning Support, included an attachment to a paper titled “Deconstructing the Myths of ‘The First Thanksgiving.'”

It includes 11 “myths” disputing everything from what was served at the first Thanksgiving (no mashed potatoes or cranberries) and who provided the food to the nature of the Pilgrims themselves: Myth No. 3 calls the colonists “rigid fundamentalists” who came to the New World “fully intending to take the land away from its native inhabitants.”

But what got the Internet abuzz was Myth No. 11: “Thanksgiving is a happy time.” It was followed by “Fact: For many Indian people, ‘Thanksgiving’ is a time of mourning … a bitter reminder of 500 years of betrayal returned for friendship.”

Hollins would not defend her letter, but David Tucker, a spokesman for the district, said it was an effort to be sensitive to minorities in Seattle schools.

“One of the core elements in education is not just understanding your own life history but also those of others,” he said.

But one Seattle-area tribe says Thanksgiving is not somber on the reservation but a time to see friends and family, as it is for other Americans.

Native Americans in the Northwest celebrate the holiday with turkey and salmon, said Daryl Williams of the Tulalip Tribes. Before the period of bitter and violent relationships between natives and their culturally European counterparts, they worked together to survive, he said.

“The spirit of Thanksgiving, of people working together to help each other, is the spirit I think that needs to grow in this country, because this country has gotten very divisive,” he said.

Nationally syndicated talk show host Michael Medved was more blunt.

“The notion that now you have a major school system sending out a message that, no, rather than expressing thanks we should emphasize guilt on this holiday — that is sick, it is destructive and it is anti-American.”

Seattle Public Schools has been in the news before, not always for the performance of its students.

The U.S. Department of Education investigated in April after the district spent part of a federal Smaller Learning Communities grant to send 20 students to the “Eighth Annual White Privilege Conference.”

After complaints last year, the district removed from its Web site a definition of racism that claimed planning ahead and individualism were examples of cultural racism.

Brain-Injury Tests Changed Because Troops Caught Cheating

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Soldiers, who have been injured in combat, have been cheating on brain-injury test in order to remain in combat. That’s “remain” in combat. Not do everything possible to get out of combat. Not pulling “Klinger” (MASH TV Series) style stunts in order to be removed from the war, but actually cheating on test that, if failed would remove them from combat, in order to stay in combat. These men and women are exceptional people and my hat is off to them. They have my gratitude, my prayers and my admiration.

Military doctors have issued a new test for combat troops who may have suffered brain injuries following reports that they have been cheating on the exams so they can stay on the battlefield.

Doctors at the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) changed certain questions to a test used to diagnose concussions because cheating on it could put servicemen and women, as well as their comrades, in danger.

“If a teacher found kids cheating, the teacher would come up with different tests. It’s the same idea,” said Chuck Dasey, a spokesman with the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

The test, called the Military Acute Concussion Evaluation (MACE), is administered to service members in combat who have suffered blows to the head, often after bomb blasts have thrown them into nearby surfaces.

Military doctors have administered the oral evaluation since 2000 at the scene of an accident or bombing or shortly after an incident occurs in the field.

Soldiers have been supplying each other with answers to prior exams so they can pass and remain with their units.

Part of the test requires memory recall of a series of simple words. On the old examination, doctors would read a list of words including “elbow,” “apple” and “bubble” and ask the patient to say them in any order. The exercise is done three times initially, and then again later to see if patients can still remember the words.

Justices Will Decide if Handgun Kept at Home Is Individual Right

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

“A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
-Amendment II (the Second Amendment) of the United States Constitution

Is there some part of this that is hard to understand?

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 — The Supreme Court announced Tuesday that it would decide whether the Constitution grants individuals the right to keep guns in their homes for private use, plunging the justices headlong into a divisive and long-running debate over how to interpret the Second Amendment’s guarantee of the “right of the people to keep and bear arms.”

The court accepted a case on the District of Columbia’s 31-year-old prohibition on the ownership of handguns. In adding the case to its calendar, for argument in March with a decision most likely in June, the court not only raised the temperature of its current term but also inevitably injected the issue of gun control into the presidential campaign.

The federal appeals court here, breaking with the great majority of federal courts to have examined the issue over the decades, ruled last March that the Second Amendment right was an individual one, not tied to service in a militia, and that the District of Columbia’s categorical ban on handguns was therefore unconstitutional.

Both the District of Columbia government and the winning plaintiff, Dick Anthony Heller, a security officer, urged the justices to review the decision. Mr. Heller, who carries a gun while on duty guarding the federal building that houses the administrative offices of the federal court system, wants to be able to keep his gun at home for self-defense.

Mr. Heller was one of six plaintiffs recruited by a wealthy libertarian lawyer, Robert A. Levy, who created and financed the lawsuit for the purpose of getting a Second Amendment case before the Supreme Court. The appeals court threw out the other five plaintiffs for lack of standing; only Mr. Heller had actually applied for permission to keep a gun at home and been rejected.

Pastor Says Superintendent Doesn’t Want Sex-Ed Curriculum Revealed

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

The school board in St. Lucie County, Florida will hold a public forum Saturday, December 8, on the proposed sex-ed curriculum called “Get Real About AIDS.” But Pastor Brian Longworth, associate pastor of Covenant Tabernacle World Outreach Center in Port St. Lucie, says the public forum is not being advertised or promoted. He believes superintendent Michael Lannon is hiding the curriculum’s content from parents because of its sexually graphic nature, which Lannon maintains is meant to promote abstinence.

Pastor Longworth alleges the educator is “not being honest with people” about the program material.

“Superintendent Lannon is presenting this curriculum as an abstinence curriculum,” he says. “However, this curriculum mentions condoms and contraception 210 times to only 17 times that it mentions abstinence. Only once does it mention abstinence without immediately following up with a reference to condoms or contraception.”

Author Testifies of Misery, Family Dysfunction that Comes from Homosexual Parenting

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Dawn Stefanowicz recounts her story of growing up in a homosexual home in Toronto, Canada, during the 1960s in Out from Under: The Impact of Homosexual Parenting (Annotation Press). Stefanowicz says she was prompted to write the book back in 2004 after testifying before a Canadian Senate committee against hate crime legislation and expressing public opposition to sexual diversity curriculum in her country’s schools.

Stefanowicz says she wrote the book with the knowledge that other children in homosexual homes would also come forward to “find truth and their own healing.”

“Children are impacted long-term in homosexual environments — not just while they’re growing up, but throughout their adulthood,” says the author. “Children [of homosexuals] who have been in touch with me, even into their fifties and sixties, still describe certain difficulties that they are facing long-term.”

Stem Cells Without Embryos: Skin Cells Transformed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Two separate teams of researchers announced on Tuesday they had transformed ordinary skin cells into batches of cells that look and act like embryonic stem cells — but without using cloning technology and without making embryos.

Their breakthroughs could make possible the long-sought goal of tailor-made medicine, but without the political, scientific and ethical roadblock of using human embryos.

Both teams call the new cells induced pluripotent stem cells and say they look and act like embryonic stem cells — the master cells that give rise to every cell and tissue in the body.

“We can now envisage a time when a simple approach can be used to produce stem cells that are able to form any tissue from a small sample taken from any of us,” Ian Wilmut of the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, said in a statement.

“This will have enormous implications for research and perhaps one day for therapy,” added Wilmut, who helped clone the first mammal, Dolly the sheep, in 1997.

James Thomson of the University of Wisconsin in Madison and colleagues reported their finding in the journal Science while Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University in Japan and colleagues reported theirs in the journal Cell.

Both teams used just four genes to transform ordinary skin cells called fibroblasts into induced pluripotent stem cells — iPS cells for short.
