Sign of Jonah

Empty Tomb

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.

Matthew 16:1-4 (New International Version)

The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.

Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.
But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish.”

Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”

He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.”

This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)

The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”

“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”

Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. Then they cried to the LORD, “O LORD, please do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O LORD, have done as you pleased.” Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.

But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.

From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. He said:
“In my distress I called to the LORD,
and he answered me.
From the depths of the grave I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.

You hurled me into the deep,
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
swept over me.

I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight;
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’

The engulfing waters threatened me,
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.

To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you brought my life up from the pit,
O LORD my God.

“When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered you, LORD,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.

“Those who cling to worthless idols
forfeit the grace that could be theirs.

But I, with a song of thanksgiving,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
Salvation comes from the LORD.”

And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

“Are We Blind, Nuts or Just Stupid?” by Pat Boone

There is an Orwellian aspect to the state of the American union today.

In George Orwell’s chilling, foreboding account of a future society, in which a Big Brother government controls literally everything, ordinary individuals and families live in a regimented, classless, colorless world, afraid or unable to question, much less dissent.

Currently, since the Obama administration took office, we’re living literally in future shock. Wild, huge decisions have been taken so swiftly. With no warning or permission from the people who elected him, the fledgling president has committed the American taxpayer to trillions of dollars of debt, in programs and investments, bailouts and takeovers, and left us stunned and strangely numb, as if we’ve been drugged.

The sheer enormity and scale of these moves has been so audacious as to seem nightmarish, fictional. A nation built on a solid foundation of fiscal responsibility, personal liberty, unlimited opportunity and representative government, in which the power flows to the head from the people, finds its situation suddenly switched – the power flowing only in reverse from the head to the dumbstruck, powerless people. And most seem unable to comprehend what’s happening to them.

It’s like what happens when a polished magician casts his spell over a throng. While he charms and distracts with entertaining patter, the audience fails to notice what his hands are doing. And while they look in one direction, he is producing a startling miracle in another, eliciting wonder and appreciation. But that’s “magic.” When it’s your life savings, your job, your hopes and freedoms disappearing, it’s neither fun nor entertaining.

Let’s make it simple. Let’s bring this unconstitutional nightmare down to a one family scenario, OK?

Tomorrow morning, while you’re pouring your Cheerios, a strange Hispanic man comes up through your basement door, with his wife and a couple kids, and he explains they broke the window into your basement – and have moved in. He asks, “What’s for breakfast?” And when you ask him angrily what gave him the idea he could do that, he tells you he just wants to share in the American Dream, like you do.

While you’re sputtering about that, realizing he’s an illegal alien, he tells you he wants your car to take his kids to enroll in the local grade school! And also to drive his wife to a local hospital, because she’s soon to give birth to a new citizen. He has no money, but he’s perfectly willing to do whatever job you create for him.

While your own family shrinks back in disbelief, you call the police. They tell you the new government has approved the resident status of millions of illegal “immigrants,” and that you’d best do what they ask.

Just at that juncture, a man calls from the bank to tell you your account is overdrawn by $30 million, due to huge notes signed for you by President Barack Obama, who claims you gave him power of attorney to do that. “Not to worry,” the banker assures you. “You can pay it down in annual increments over the next four years, and if you run short of actual cash, the U.S. Treasury is printing up lots of paper money, and they’ll send you piles of that. We’ll accept that here at the state-owned bank, along with the title to your house and any other assets you may have.”

You call a lawyer, but he’s just shut down his practice. He tells you the law he learned in school has been junked, along with the Constitution it was based on. The country is now governed – and soon totally owned – by officials who have merged the United States into a New World Order, aligned with the European Union and its ideas of morality, law and economy. It’s about to be announced that Mexico, the U.S. and Canada are now one happy entity called New America.

In short order, you find that your job is gone; the business is shut down. But you and your equally distraught, dazed neighbors are informed that you’ll be housed, fed, clothed and cared for by your benevolent government, which now runs everything. The all-powerful NEA has already indoctrinated your kids with the new “world think,” and they seem puzzled that you’re not happy with these great new developments.

“Dad,” they say, “it’s all good! There’s nothing to worry about now. All we really need is provided by President Obama, and all Americans have exactly the same things. The churches are all closed, and the preachers are going to jail for ‘hate speech,’ so we have our Sundays free to do what we want. The teachers give all us kids condoms, and if somebody still gets pregnant, we just get an abortion slip from the principal and go to the Obama Family Planning Center next to the school!

“The Muslim teachers tell us that we’ll all be living under what they call ‘Shariah something,’ some other rules, but as long as we do what we’re told, we’ll all get along fine. So, please, Dad, stop crying. … The president has thought of everything. It’s all good!”

In a few more days, sedated with National Health Care tranquilizers, you start riding your bicycle anywhere you still want to go. Though President Obama promised to develop new alternative energy, no transit known to man can run on wind or solar or industrial rubber bands, and, of course, the Pelosi/Reed Congress nixes nuclear. So the United States swaps with China, Americans riding bicycles while the Chinese drive hybrid automobiles, alternating gasoline (at $10 Worldollars a gallon) with advanced technology batteries.

The “news” media continually broadcasts the president’s reports on how well things are going. There is almost total peace worldwide, since all military has been brought under United Nations control, and resistance is a death sentence. There’s growing pressure to adopt Islam as the world religion, and our new president appears to think this would be a “unifying force.” How practical! A one-world government, religion, economy and military!

Do you get it now? This Orwellian scenario is where we’re headed – as that old Bible on your shelf has foretold for 2,000 years. Blow the dust off and read it.

We’re all in it. And the last chapters of the last book, Revelation, tell us how it all turns out.

Pirates Captured After Threatening Wrong Ship

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Arrr, makes bein’ an honest pirate hard, matey.

From a distance the large ship on the horizon looked like the perfect target, ripe for a successful spot of piracy.

But as Somali pirates sped toward the vessel sailing near the Seychelles Islands on Sunday, they were horrified to see two boats and a helicopter set off from their target and launch their own counter-attack.

They had failed to spot iin the dazzling sun, that the “merchant ship” they thought they were intercepting was actually a French naval ship bristling with cannons, radar technology and armed commandos.

When the three pirate boats were spotted heading toward them the frigate Nivose, one of the ships patrolling the region as part of the European Union anti-piracy mission Atalanta, headed into the sun to camouflage its true identity before turning to confront its attackers.

When the boats were close enough, Lt. Commander Jean-Marc le Quilliec sent his commandos out on outboards, with a helicopter to provide air support.

The helicopter fired two warning shots to stop the three boats from fleeing and within minutes the 11 pirates had surrendered.

Two of the attack boats were small skiffs which the pirates used as attack vessels and the third was a 30-foot mothership, used to transport supplies such as petrol, water and food.

Only one pirate was left on board the mother ship which had nothing on board except fuel and potates, according to Lt. Commander le Quilliec.

“He apparently thought the pirates had hijacked us,” he said.

“Note the Blindfold, Mr. President” by Jeff Schreiber

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Mr. President, Lady Justice wears a blindfold for a reason.

She is not to know of strife. She is not to know of circumstance. She is not to know of wealth or poverty, strength or weakness, education or illiteracy, gifted oratory or bumbling foolishness.

Obviously, Mr. President, you know not the role of the judiciary.

Your remarks today showed complete ignorance as to the designated function of two of the three branches of the very government you lead. You say that “justice isn’t about some abstract legal theory or footnote in a casebook,” but it is. That “abstract legal theory,” Mr. President, is the United States Constitution, a document you have in the past derided as being fundamentally flawed. You say that justice is “about how our laws affect the daily realities of people’s lives,” but you’re wrong. Making law is the role of legislators; a judge’s role is to interpret it and nothing more. You would know this, sir, if you had spent more time in the U.S. Senate actually legislating rather than preening and campaigning and planning your next move.

In 2001, you gave a public radio interview as a state senator and law professor in which you lamented that the Supreme Court “never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society” and that the Court had not facilitated the ability for America to “break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution.” On the Constitution itself, you remarked that, because it never forced the redistribution of wealth to African Americans, it was a document with a “fundamental flaw” that “reflected the enormous blind spot in this culture that carries on until this day.”

That view, Mr. President, seems to lend itself to your idea that it is the job of the Supreme Court to assume the role of the legislature, essential constraints of the Constitution be damned. Hence your mission to nominate a Justice which considers hopes and dreams and struggles as much, if not more, than the law itself — and that says nothing of your politically correct focus on gender and national origin rather than pure qualification.

Mr. President, you are absolutely, unequivocally, 100 percent wrong on the role of the judiciary, and your blindness as to what should be the blindness of justice could very well haunt this nation for generations to come. The role of a Supreme Court Justice, Mr. President, is not to evaluate the matter at hand based upon the feeling in their “hearts.” Decisions and outcomes are to be based upon interpretation of the law and of the Constitution alone — not “empathy,” and surely not the ability to understand and identify with “people’s hopes and struggles,” as you said today. The role of a Supreme Court Justice, Mr. President, is not to make a decision based upon the interests of a single mother, a welfare addict or anyone else for that matter, just as the role of the judiciary is neither to favor the weak against the strong, nor the strong against the weak. When weighing a particular controversy, Mr. President, the role of a Supreme Court Justice is to instead look at the United States Constitution as written by this nation’s founders and interpret that document–preferably in as narrow a fashion as possible–as needed to adjudicate the controversy in question. At most, contemporaneous writings shedding light on the framers’ intentions and aspirations may be persuasive, but certainly not binding. Foreign law should never enter into the equation.

Mr. President, contrary to what you said in 2001, the United States of America does not need to “break free” from the principles put forth by our framers. As far as I can tell, the abandonment of those ideas and ideals is what got us here in the first place. Breaking free from the principles and values of those imperfect men is precisely why we stare a bloated government in the mouth and watch helplessly as our sovereignty and our freedoms erode by the minute.

Every single word, phrase and paragraph in our founding documents are there for a reason, placed there by people who fought, bled and died to make this country the antithesis of the tyrannical rule from which they escaped. This is a nation which, because of its founding principles, is a beacon of hope for those around the world who strive for freedom, opportunity and fairness. And now, Mr. President, a man who laments that the Supreme Court hasn’t simply tossed asunder the principles and aspirations of our founding fathers in the name of “economic justice” and “social engineering” has the opportunity to nominate a Justice to that Court.

That man is you. And as an American, Mr. President, I hope you abandon everything you’ve learned and everything you know, and that you choose wisely. Note the blindfold, Mr. President. Like every word in our founding documents, it’s there for a reason.

More Prayers Needed For James and Gail

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Our friend, James, who is suffering from cancer, is really not doing well.
Gail has gotten bronchitis and is not able to be with James to help in his care. The doctor is not returning her calls and James does not remember everything that is going on in his treatment.
Also, due to the holes in Jame’s lungs, he has not had chemo for almost a month. This is giving the cancer free reign to grow as fast as it can.
These good folks need your prayers so much. Please keep praying for them.
Thanks!!

Obama: Wall Street Will Play Less Dominant Role

Monday, May 4th, 2009

In other words, more socialism and less freedom.

WASHINGTON – Wall Street is not going to play as dominant a role in the economy as regulations reduce “some of the massive leveraging and the massive risk-taking that had become so common,” President Barack Obama says.

The changes in the role of Wall Street and the huge profits that came from that risk-taking could mean other adjustments as well, Obama said in an interview in this week’s New York Times Magazine.

“That means that more talent, more resources will be going to other sectors of the economy,” he said. “I actually think that’s healthy. We don’t want every single college grad with mathematical aptitude to become a derivatives trader. We want some of them to go into engineering, and we want some of them to be going into computer design.”

The Obama administration is trying to restore more regulations on the financial sector to avoid some of the risk-taking that helped cause the current economic problems.

“Wall Street will remain a big, important part of our economy, just as it was in the ’70s and the ’80s,” he said. “It just won’t be half of our economy.”

Obama said he expects that government efforts to fix the economy will cause long-term changes.

“What I think will change, what I think was an aberration, was a situation where corporate profits in the financial sector were such a heavy part of our overall profitability over the last decade,” he said.

Obama said he’s confident that people will regain trust and confidence in the financial system, but he believes it will take time.

“I think it’s important to understand that some of that wealth was illusory in the first place,” he said.
