“You Are Worth More Than Many Sparrows”

Monday, June 8th, 2009

“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Jesus and the Sparrows

I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God.”

Luke 12:4-8 (New International Version)

Fears in Beirut of Hizballah Coup After Election Defeat

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Early Monday, June 8, Saad Hariri announced his 14 March bloc had retained its parliamentary majority of 70 out of 128 seats in Sunday’s Lebanese election. A politician close to the Hizballah-led March 8 coalition, which is supported by Syria and Iran, admitted defeat. Both spoke as the votes were still being counted.

DEBKAfile’s Middle East sources report Hizballah, although tipped to win, prepared a backup plan ready to seize power in Beirut if it failed at the ballot. If confirmed, the results are a victory for US influence against an Iranian and Syrian takeover of Lebanon.

These elections bear heavily on Iran’s presidential vote Friday, June 12, since the incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threw all his personal weight and an estimated $100 million behind the pro-Iranian alliance’s bid to gain control of Lebanon through the ballot-box, our Middle East sources report. He badly needed a win to prove his rivals wrong, especially Mir Hossein Mousavi, in denouncing his external policies as wildly adventurous. Losing Lebanon to the pro-US bloc presents a major setback for Ahmadinejad’s chances of reelection. He may not take it lying down.

Sources in Beirut have spoken openly in the past of Hizballah’s Plan B to reverse its unexpected defeat by the bullet. Hassan Nasrallah is confident that his militia can swing a coup after working hard in recent weeks to persuade Shiite troops which form around half of the 75,000-strong national army to join forces with Hizballah in this event.

He believes the Iranian and Syrian military officers attached to his campaign headquarters will make sure the seizure of power is fast, smooth and virtually bloodless.

There is no organized military force in Beirut capable of resisting Hizballah, unless president Michel Suleiman orders the army to stand up to the pro-Iranian militia, which he refrained from doing against its assault on the government last year.

Alive to the real danger of their country being converted to a second Iran, Lebanese Christian and Sunni Muslim voters turned out in force – app. 54 percent, which is 20 percent more than in 2005. This may have tipped the scales and preserved the country’s multi-confessional Western character under the camp led by Saad Hariri and prime minister Fuad Siniora and backed by Washington.

Student Will Appeal Graduation Speech Lawsuit

Monday, June 8th, 2009

I wish the schools and the ACLU would quit violating these student’s First Amendment rights. I also wish the liberal counts, who are supposed to be impartial, would quit letting it happen.

A three-judge panel of the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says Erica Corder was disciplined for failing to follow school policy, not for her religious views. In 2006, Lewis Palmer High School officials in Colorado Springs screened Corder’s speech. However, she changed her text and urged the audience to consider the Christian faith.

Before Corder received her diploma, the principal required her to write a letter explaining her actions and acknowledging that the remarks were her personal views. Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, argues that Corder has grounds to continue to pursue her case.

“This is ridiculous because the school’s speech was not an issue. This was clearly student speech, not school-sponsored speech,” he points out. “Merely because a student is on public property or in a venue where the school function is taking place does not transform a student’s individual speech into government speech — but that’s in fact what the court ultimately ruled.”

Obama Speech Uses Islamic Text Urging War Against Nonbelievers

Monday, June 8th, 2009

The emperor either stepped in it again, or he truly is a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”.

JERUSALEM – In his major address to the Muslim world last week, President Obama quoted a verse from the Quran that is interpreted as urging Muslims to follow Muhammad in waging jihad against nonbelievers.

The context of the verse – first noticed by Robert Spencer of the Jihad Watch website – was confirmed by Quranic experts contacted by WND.

“I have pointed to this section of the Quran as showing the importance of jihad and to follow the prophet (Muhammad) in jihad even though a war may be difficult,” Abu Abaida Al-Ahmed, the imam of a central mosque in Gaza City, told WND.

Obama quoted the verse in question during a section of his speech where he was stressing a “new beginning” between the U.S. and the Muslim world, and the need for a “sustained effort to listen to each other.”

Obama continued: “As the Holy Quran tells us, ‘Be conscious of God and speak always the truth.’ That is what I will try to do – to speak the truth as best I can, humbled by the task before us, and firm in my belief that the interests we share as human beings are far more powerful than the forces that drive us apart.”

Obama was reading from chapter 9 verse 119 of the Quran, which deals with the theme of not abandoning Muhammad.

The next Quranic passage continues: “Neither the dwellers of the city, nor the Arabs around them, shall seek to stay behind the messenger of Allah (when he mobilizes for war). Nor shall they give priority to their own affairs over supporting him. This is because they do not suffer any thirst, or any effort, or hunger in the cause of Allah, or take a single step that enrages the disbelievers, or inflict any hardship upon the enemy, without having it written down for them as a credit. Allah never fails to recompense those who work righteousness.”

The two passages are part of a Quranic section scolding local Muslims in Medina for refusing to accompany Muhammad on a war expedition to Tabouk in northern Arabia, where he was seeking to fight a Byzantine garrison.

Abu Saqer, the head of Jahidiya Salifiyah, an Islamic outreach movement in Gaza, explained there are two main interpretations of the verse cited by Obama:

“First that you should follow the truth of Allah, but in specific to follow those who are in jihad with the prophet in spite of the great heat of going to war,” he said.

Al Ahmed, the Gaza imam, stated, “The verses come from the period of the Al-Tabouk war, the year when the prophet left Mecca for Madina.”

The main official Quranic exegesis, or tafsir, concerning verse 119 deals with the importance of speaking the truth. A secondary tafsir, however, uses the verse quoted by Obama to argue for jihad.

That tafsir reads: “(Be careful of your duty to Allah) obey Allah in that which he has commanded you, (and be with the Truthful) with Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and their companions when they stay behind and when they participate in jihad.”

During his speech in Cairo last week, Obama referred to the Quran as “holy” four times and quoted several verses from the Islamic text. He also used Muslim terminology, such as the Quranic obligation of “zakat” or charity.

The speech, in which Obama referenced his Islamic experiences as a child in Indonesia and the Muslim faith of his paternal family, was a major departure from the tone of his campaign last year, when Obama and his team emphasized the then-candidate’s stated Christian faith.

ACLU Threatens, Students Still Recite Prayer

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Good for them!!!

During a recent graduation ceremony at Pace High School in Santa Rosa County, Florida, nearly 400 graduating seniors stood and recited the Lord’s Prayer. The American Civil Liberties Union had previously filed a lawsuit against the school because they allege that the principal asked the athletic director to bless a meal at an awards ceremony. The graduation prayer was recited in protest of the lawsuit.

“The ACLU had actually threatened the school that they would be in trouble with the court if any student or any kind of religious message was given at this particular graduation. They did not want any student to say anything religious, or no prayer,” [Matt Staver of Liberty Counsel] explains. “The students would not take this sitting down, and they decided to fight back.”

The ACLU contends that something should have been done to stop the students from reciting the Lord’s Prayer. Staver says his organization will defend any students if action is taken against them.

Napolitano Swears in Leader of Arab Group that Hailed Jihadists as ‘Heroes’

Monday, June 8th, 2009

JERUSALEM – Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano swore in to her official advisory council the head of an Arab American organization whose officials have labeled deadly anti-U.S. jihadists as “heroes” and opposed referring to Hamas as a terrorist organization.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, or ADC, also has close ties to anti-Israel professor Rashid Khalidi, whose association with President Obama – first exposed by WND – stirred controversy during last year’s presidential campaign.

The ADC also leads the opposition to domestic anti-terrorism measures taken after the 9-11 attacks, such as watch lists, background check delays for visas and an initiative meant to more comprehensively screen visitors from select Mideast countries or specific individuals labeled as possible national security threats.

Last week, Napolitano swore in Damascus-born Kareem Shora, the ADC’s national executive director, to a position on the Homeland Security Advisory Council, an outside-the-department group of national security experts that advises the secretary. Shora is the first Arab rights advocate on the panel.

At the ceremony in Albequrque, Shora reportedly recounted how he watched with his immigrant father Obama’s address last week to the Muslim world. Shora said his father cried when he heard Obama’s message of reconciliation.

The ADC takes an openly anti-Israel line. Its official material has accused the Jewish state of “apartheid” and “atrocities” against the Palestinians. In 2006, a local ADC group drew up a petition calling on the U.S. to stop providing Israel with weapons.

Scores of senior ADC officials have expressed positive views toward terrorist organizations.

In 1994, during one of the main peaks of Hamas suicide bombings against Israeli civilians, then-ADC President Hamzi Moghrabi said, “I will not call [Hamas] a terrorist organization. I mean, I know many people in Hamas. They are very respectable. … I don’t believe Hamas, as an organization, is a violent organization.”

Discover the Networks notes that two years later, Moghrabi’s successor, Hala Maksoud, defended the Hezbollah terrorist group.

“I find it shocking,” Maksoud said, “that [one] would include Hezbollah in … [an] inventory of Middle East ‘terrorist’ groups.”

In 2000, new ADC President Hussein Ibish characterized Hezbollah as “a disciplined and responsible liberation force.”

When Israel released Hezbollah prisoners in early 2004, Imad Hamad, ADC’s Midwest Regional Director, openly celebrated the freedom of “the heroes.”

Besides its deadly terrorism against Israel, Hezbollah distinguishes itself as second only to al-Qaida among terror groups responsible for killing the most Americans. It’s responsible for such deadly attacks as the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing, which killed 299 servicemen, including 220 U.S. Marines.

The ADC is linked to Columbia University’s Khalidi, who spoke at several of the organization’s events. At one speech, in June 2002, the New York Sun documented how Khalidi appeared to condone the killing of armed Israelis.

“Killing civilians is a war crime. It’s a violation of international law. They are not soldiers. They’re civilians, they’re unarmed,” Khalidi said in a recorded address. “The ones who are armed, the ones who are soldiers, the ones who are in occupation, that’s different. That’s resistance.”

The ADC also has collaborated on numerous projects with the Arab American Action Network, or AAAN, an organization founded by Khalidi’s wife Mona, and which WND first reported received start-up funds from a nonprofit, the Woods Fund, on which Obama served as a paid director.

The AAAN, headquartered in the heart of Chicago’s Palestinian immigrant community, worked on projects supporting open boarders and education for illegal aliens. Speakers at AAAN dinners and events routinely have taken an anti-Israel line. The organization co-sponsored anti-Israel projects and exhibits.

Khalidi, an apologist for PLO terrorism, holds the position of Columbia’s Edward Said professorship of Arab Studies. Said, a well-known far-leftist intellectual and apologist for Palestinian terrorism, served on an advisory counsel to the ADC.

According to the ADC charter, the organization seeks to “empower Arab Americans; defend the civil rights of all people of Arab heritage in the U.S.; promote civic participation; and encourage a balanced U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.”

The organization has actively lobbied against the Patriot Act and was reportedly instrumental in scaling back some of the restrictions of the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System program, or NSEERS. Shora was personally involved in those efforts.

The NSEERS required persons whose nationality identifies them as a possible security risk to submit to control processes governed by the Department of Justice. NSEERS also targeted specific individuals labeled as possible national security threats, at times making them undergo fingerprinting, photographing and registration.
