Obama to AMA: You’re the Problem

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I am so glad I had my cancer surgery before Emperor Obama had a chance to break the health care system.

A leading health economist says President Obama delivered a subtle and unpleasant message to the American Medical Association yesterday, implying that doctors are the main problem behind rising healthcare costs.

related article buttonBarack Obama cited in his AMA speech what he argues are radical differences in the practice of medicine across the country — some doctors are practicing medicine conservatively, while others are ordering unnecessary tests and prescribing “treatments that, in some cases, can actually do people harm by raising the risk of infection or medical error.”

Dr. John Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, believes President Obama wants the federal government to force doctors to change the way they practice medicine.

Obama to Propose Sweeping Overhaul of Financial Regulatory System

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

The Emperor wants more power. Woe to the poor soul who dares to stand in his way…

WASHINGTON — Setting up a certain fight with big business, President Obama is proposing a new regulatory agency to police lenders and protect consumers in credit, savings and other banking transactions .

The consumer agency and a newly empowered Federal Reserve will be two of the central elements of a broad overhaul of the financial regulatory system that the president will announce on Wednesday, officials said.

Already the nation’s central bank, the Federal Reserve would supervise large financial institutions that are considered so big that their failure could undermine America’s economy, according to the administration proposal.

But even as the Fed gains new powers, Obama also would transfer some banking authority that now rests with the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department to the new consumer agency the Consumer Financial Protection Agency.

“There is going to be streamlining, consolidation and additional overlap so that you don’t find people falling through the gaps, whether it’s the consumer protection side, the investor protection side, the systemic risk that we need to make sure is avoided,” Obama said Tuesday.

The expanded Fed role and the new consumer regulator are likely to be the two main political flash points in the administration’s proposal. Many bankers oppose a new consumer protection regulator and many lawmakers in Congress worry the Fed could turn into a too-powerful and independent financial overseer. Friction over those points could slow any major overhaul of banking and market regulations.

In addition to having the Federal Reserve supervise “systemically significant” institutions, Obama will recommend a council of regulators, which would include the Fed, to monitor risk throughout the broader financial system.

The arrangement is designed to prevent any more crashes like those that felled AIG and Lehman Brothers.

In conjunction with the Fed’s authority over large financial institutions and the new consumer agency, Obama will also propose:

* Requiring higher capital levels at financial institutions to avoid over-leveraging.
* Eliminating the Office of Thrift Supervision, which oversees savings institutions, and creating a new national bank regulator for all federally chartered banks.
* Additional protections for investors by requiring greater disclosure by hedge funds as well as regulations of credit default swaps and over-the-counter derivatives that previously operated outside of government oversight.
* Requiring brokers and originators of asset-backed securities to retain a 5 percent stake in the securities.
* A system for the orderly disposition of any troubled large interconnected firms whose failure poses a risk to the entire financial system, such as AIG.

Obama’s plan does not attempt major consolidation of regulatory agencies and does not inject itself in an ongoing debate over whether to bring some insurance companies under federal oversight.

Asked on CNBC whether the plan stopped short out of political concerns, the Obama said: “We want to get this thing passed. We think speed is important … but we don’t want to tilt at windmills. … We want to get the best regulatory system in place.”

Obama’s decision to create a consumer agency comes amid criticism that mortgage lenders and credit card companies have taken advantage of unwitting customers and saddled them with debt. The financial crisis was precipitated in part by the preponderance of securities backed by mortgages that went sour when the housing market collapsed.

Despite Media Blackout Almost Half Believe Obama Should Release Birth Certificate

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

WASHINGTON – It may be the issue few in the media dare address, but a new scientific public opinion survey of a cross-section of Americans shows they are not only aware of questions about Barack Obama’s constitutional eligibility for office, but almost half are either “troubled” by the questions or believe he should release all relevant documents including his long-form birth certificate.

Asked if they are aware of the questions raised about Obama’s constitutional eligibility for office, 51.3 percent answered affirmatively, while only 18.7 percent said no. Another 30 percent said they were unsure.

“Our polling shows that the questions surrounding Barack Obama’s eligibility to serve as president clearly strike a nerve across America, probably because it is a problem that everybody understands,” said pollster Fritz Wenzel. “Every American citizen has a birth certificate, and once in a while we all have to produce them to get a drivers license or gain entrance to school. Everyone understands the simple rules – if you don’t produce it, you don’t get in. And while Obama did get in to the White House, nearly half the country’s adults – 49 percent – are troubled by this issue and still want him to produce his official long-form birth certificate.”

Among Republicans, 58.2 percent said they were aware, while 49 percent of Democrats acknowledged knowing about the questions. The higher the income of those questioned, the more likely they were to answer yes.

“There’s not much variance across demographic groups on the question, with the exception of race, where whites were far more likely than blacks to be troubled by Obama’s refusal to produce the original birth certificate,” said Wenzel. “It is interesting to note that Obama’s own age cohort – those in their 40s and 50s – were more likely than any other age groups to want the new president to prove he is eligible for the job.”

When asked what their view of the questions was, 41.5 percent of respondents answered that Obama should release all relevant documents, including the long-form birth certificate. Another 7.8 percent said they were “troubled” by the questions.

Others (12.3 percent) said they were “not concerned,” while 9.2 percent said the questions were not valid and 14.3 percent said Obama had met the requirements as a “natural born citizen.” Another 8.5 percent said Obama had answered the questions to their satisfaction, while 6.3 percent said the requirements of the Constitution were simply outdated.

The WND/Wenzel survey was conducted June 6–10 using an automated telephone technology calling a random sampling of listed telephone numbers nationwide. The survey included 22 questions and carries a 95 percent confidence interval. It included 790 adult respondents. It carries a margin of error of +/– 3.5 percentage points.

Data from this survey also showed that a substantial majority – 56 percent – also wants Obama to release his educational records, which would yield more clues to his early life and citizenship. Among men, 62 percent said those school records should be released.

“These are questions that are not on the front pages right now, but they are far from going away – and people clearly want answers,” said Wenzel. “As long as they go unanswered, they act like a low-grade fever that hampers everything Obama is attempting to do in office. And they could flare up at any time.”

Americans Drift into Political Oblivion

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Forty percent of Americans interviewed in national Gallup Poll surveys this year describe their political views as conservative, 35 percent as moderate, and 21 percent as liberal. Michael Franc, vice president for government relations at The Heritage Foundation, says the slight increase for conservatism since last year is a response to what has been happening in Washington.

“The bailout of the auto industry, the micromanaging of corporations, the talk about major expansions of government, passage of massive new amounts of federal spending are all working, I think, to spook a lot of Americans to the point where some of them are now saying, ‘this conservative thing looks pretty good,'” he contends.

So far in 2009, Gallup has found an average of 36 percent of Americans considering themselves Democratic, 28 percent Republican, and 37 percent independent. Franc says since last year, there has been a steady migration of Americans from identification with the two major parties to the status of independent.

“What you’re seeing here is an enormous amount of dissatisfaction with the current administration and their policies, but the Republicans as a party have not done enough to lure those dissatisfied individuals into their fold,” he points out. “And some of these individuals have actually vacated the Republican tent in the last six months to a year, and they haven’t been drawn back in yet.”
