“Climate Skeptics Need Mental Help?” By Brent Bozell

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Talk about an inconvenient truth. In ever-increasing numbers, Americans are becoming skeptical about the scientific argument that there’s a man-made global-warming crisis that requires immediate and drastic government action. The media’s enablers of the radical environmental left have a response: maybe America just isn’t smart or curious enough to save the planet. In fact, they say our growing denial is making us nationally irrational.

On Monday, National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” ran a story by science correspondent Richard Harris. He worried out loud about a new Harris Poll showing that 51 percent of the American public believes that the carbon dioxide building up in the atmosphere could warm up our planet. That’s down from 71 percent just two years ago. That’s a free-fall.

Harris found an expert from Yale to explain this decline is based on our poor economy. People are too worried about their jobs to care about the fate of the entire globe. In a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, that’s why climate came in dead last of 20 issues of concern.

But that’s a dodge. It doesn’t explain why a number of recent polls show that people are less and less likely to accept the “science” of global warming. Another possibility was lurking out there.

NPR brought on sociologist Kari Marie Norgaard of Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, to explain why, as scientists grow ever more confident of global warming, public opinion is moving the other way. “This seems irrational,” she said. “And in that sense, it’s challenging the basic premise that we have of an enlightened, democratic, modern society.”

Harris said Norgaard studied the shift in public opinion and found that people are not too bright and easily overwhelmed: “As people start to feel overwhelmed by the scope of the problem, they simply turn away from the topic. It’s denial, plain and simple,” Harris suggested. Norgaard added: “We just don’t want to know about it, and so we are actively distancing ourselves from it or trying to protect ourselves from it.”

Her scientific theory: Anyone immersed in global warming theory embraces it. To know it is to love it. Anyone opposed to that theory has his nose in a corner with his fingers in his ears, trying not to hear a discouraging word.

The arrogance of liberals never ceases to amaze. Lazy people are the most likely people to go with the media flow on global doom and gloom. But get intellectually involved, analyze the evidence, listen to the discussions on talk radio, read the hot websites skeptical of the global-warming lobby – and you’re bizarrely analyzed as someone who’s “distancing themselves” from reality.

On Tuesday, The Washington Post dove into the shallow end of this debate with a psychoanalysis of its own. Their headline was “It’s natural to behave irrationally: Climate change is just the latest problem that people acknowledge but ignore.” Reporter David Fahrenthold began: “To a psychologist, climate change looks as if it was designed to be ignored.”

The Post’s expert was Duke professor Dan Ariely: “We are collectively irrational, in the sense that we should really care about the long-term well-being of the planet, but when we get up in the morning, it’s very hard to motivate ourselves.” Failing to support Al Gore & Company, Ariely surmised, is just like “why we don’t exercise, and we overeat, and we bite our fingernails…It’s not something where we’re going to overcome human nature.”

The elitists at NPR and The Washington Post didn’t stop to consider that while journalists love to scare people about global warming, they’ve seriously neglected to explain what the proposed command-and-control government “solutions” are. In October, the Pew Research Center found that when they asked how much people had heard about a policy called “cap and trade,” a majority had not. Fourteen percent said they had heard “a lot” about it, 30 percent said they’d heard “a little” – and 55 percent said they’d heard “nothing.”

The networks have barely covered the global-warming legislation debate in Congress this year, preferring to cover health care – which is exactly what Team Obama wanted. Every piece of trivia from Tiger Woods to White House party-crashers has received more attention, at least until the Left gathered in Copenhagen. There was zero coverage on ABC, CBS, and NBC of the “cap and trade” bill in the House – until after it passed. And then it vanished again.

If Americans are growing skeptical of global warming, it’s not due to Al Gore’s army in the newsrooms of the Old Media. It’s the impact of the New Media, daring to expose how “science” is being manipulated and exaggerated to bring about a massive socialist intervention in our economy.

Famous Weather Scientist: Climategate ‘Tip of Iceberg’

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Anyone who still believes in man-made global warming needs to reevaluate their thoughts. The climate scientist’s credibility is in shambles.

The Colorado scientist described by the Washington Post as “the World’s Most Famous Hurricane Expert” says the “ClimateGate” e-mails from the United Kingdom that revealed possible data manipulation are evidence of a conspiracy among “warmists,” those who believe man’s actions are triggering possibly catastrophic climate change.

“The recent ‘ClimateGate’ revelations coming out of the UK University of East Anglia are but the tip of a giant iceberg of a well organized international climate warming conspiracy that has been gathering momentum for the last 25 years,” said Colorado State University’s Dr. William Gray.

His are the annual hurricane forecasts that are the standard for weather prognostications. His work pioneered the science of forecasting hurricanes and he has served as weather forecaster for the United States Air Force. He is Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Science at CSU and heads the school’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences Tropical Meteorology Project.

He was referring to e-mails and other information that had been obtained by a hacker and posted on a Russian web server that included e-mails among scientists who are part of the cadre of researchers who believe man-made global warming is an impending catastrophe for the world.

One e-mail said: “I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd (sic) from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.”

Another expressed internal doubts: “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August (Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society) 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate.”

Further, an e-mail exchange suggested the suppression of information: “Can you delete any e-mails you may have had with Keith re (Assessment Report 4)? Keith will do likewise. He’s not in at the moment – minor family crisis.”

Gray said, “This conspiracy would become much more manifest if all the e-mails of the publically funded climate research groups of the U.S. and of foreign governments were ever made public.”

His comments are in a commentary at the online Climate and were posted just as officials from around the globe are conferencing in Copenhagen on the issue of “global warming” and what taxes should be imposed on those who use energy.

“The Cap-and-Trade bill presently before Congress, the likely climate agreements coming out of the Copenhagen Conference, and the EPA’s just announced decision to treat CO2 as a pollutant represents a grave threat to the industrial world’s continued economic development,” Gray warned. “We should not allow these proposals to restrict our economic growth. Any United Nations climate bill our country might sign would act as an infringement on our country’s sovereignty.”

He said he probably would have been “concerned” over the possibility people are causing serious global climate degradation “had I not devoted my entire career of over half-a-century to the study and foreasting of meteorological and climate events.”

“There has been an unrelenting quarter century of one-sided indoctrination of the western world by the media and by various scientists and governments concerning a coming carbon dioxide … induced global warming disaster,” he said. “These warming scenarios have been orchestrated by a combination of environmentalists, vested interest scientists wanting larger federal grants and publicity, the media which profits from doomsday scenario reporting, governmental bureaucrats who want more power over our lives, and socialists who want to level-out global living standards.

“These many alarmist groups appear to have little concern over whether their global warming prognostications are accurate, however. And they most certainly are not. The alarmists believe they will be able to scare enough of our citizens into believing their propaganda that the public will be willing to follow their advice on future energy usage and agree to a lowering of their standard of living in the name of climate salvation.”

He said there still remains to be an “honest and broad” scientific debate on the influence of CO2 on global temperature, and such models as have been used are flawed.

He cited a global warming of about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the last century, and that’s “not a consequence of human activities.”

“The disastrous economic consequences of restricting CO2 emissions from the present by as much as 20 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050 (as being proposed in Copenhagen) have yet to be digested by the general public. Such CO2 output decreases would cause very large increases in our energy costs, a lowering of our standard of living, and do nothing of significance to improve our climate,” he said.

Healthcare Loophole Benefits Illegals

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform says technically the bill states that it does not cover illegal aliens. But there is a glitch, he says.

“The problem is that the verification procedures for proving eligibility are very lax,” says Mehlman. “And in fact, all somebody has to do is make a claim to citizenship and that pretty much gets them into the system. It doesn’t require the more stringent verification procedures that are already in place and being used successfully in many other government programs.”

“Providing the full range of healthcare benefits to illegal aliens in the United States would raise the cost from about $11-billion a year now that the taxpayers have to pay, to more than $30-billion. So it would triple the cost burden on the American taxpayer,” he explains.

Home Front Command Readying Tel Aviv for Attack from Ramat Gan Missiles

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

The IDF Home Front Command is preparing for the possibility that Hamas will fire missiles up to a range of 80 kilometers from the Gaza Strip in the event of a future conflict with Israel, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

The preparations are being carried out on several different levels within the IDF, with a focus on preparing officials of regional councils and municipalities within the range – including Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan – for the possibility of missiles and rockets landing in their communities.

During Operation Cast Lead, which began December 27, 2008, Hamas fired rockets to a range of around 40 km., hitting Ashdod and Yavneh. In late September, Hamas fired a missile with a 60 km. range from the Gaza Strip and into the Mediterranean Sea.

The IDF is also preparing information kits that could be distributed in the affected areas, as well as Home Front Command reserve units that would need to be deployed there in the event of rocket attacks.

The IDF believes that Hamas has obtained Iranian-made Fajr missiles, either the Fajr 3 or Fajr 5. The Fajr 3 is five meters long and can carry a 45-kilogram warhead. To increase the rocket’s range, Hamas has the option of shrinking the warhead to 25 or 30 kilograms, enabling it to strike deeper into Tel Aviv.

This missile is also in Hizbullah hands in Lebanon.

The Fajr 5 is slightly larger – 10 meters long – and has a range of up to 75 km, which could reach Tel Aviv, as well as communities further up the coast. Intelligence assessments are that Hamas smuggled the missiles into the Gaza Strip through tunnels, possibly as separate components.

Iran already supplies Hamas with 122mm Katyusha rockets that are smuggled into Gaza in several pieces and then assembled by Hamas engineers.

Tora Tora Tora

Tora! Tora! Tora! is a 1970 American-Japanese film that dramatizes the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, to the extent these facts were known at the time of production.

The commanders in Hawaii, General Short and Admiral Kimmel, though scapegoated for decades, are portrayed as taking defensive measures for the apparent threats, including relocation of the fighter aircraft at Pearl Harbor to the middle of the base, in response to fears of sabotage from local Japanese insurgents. They received limited warning of the increasing risk of aerial attack, which was better understood in Washington than in Honolulu. The film is famous for Isoroku Yamamoto’s quote likening the attacks to “awakening a sleeping giant”, although it may have been fictitious.

The title is made up of the code-words that were used by the Japanese to indicate that complete surprise was achieved and is translated in the Japanese as “虎” or “tiger”, hence making the code for achieved surprise “Tiger, tiger, tiger”.

Physician Shortage is Getting Worse

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Obama and the Democrats continue to press for adding millions of people to our health care system. What they refuse to talk about is the lack of physicians to care for all of these people. No matter how much the liberals push, threaten and punish, it’s not possible to get something from nothing, and in this case, the resources to care for more people just aren’t there.

Brace yourselves: Demand for physicians continues to outstrip supply, and the problem is likely to get worse, according to new data.

One source underscoring the problem is the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which concluded last month that the healthcare sector added 28,500 jobs in October. That included 4,800 jobs in physician offices and 10,000 in hospitals.

While the BLS report doesn’t break down these jobs into specific job titles, another report by healthcare staffing firm AMN Healthcare Services offers a more-detailed picture. The firm’s report, conducted in partnership with the Council on Physician and Nurse Supply, surveyed 284 hospital chief executive officers between June and August of this year.

Researchers found that about 95 percent of those CEOs reported a physician shortage, with a vacancy rate of 11 percent, potentially compromising care in almost half of those cases. This was despite the fact that 34 percent of the CEOs had increased their physician staff roster within the previous six months.

Meanwhile, physician vacancies aren’t the only major headache hospital CEOs face. Ninety-one percent of CEOs said that they were seeing a nursing shortfall, though the vacancy rate was just 6 percent.
